Philosophy of Education

I believe the purpose of education is to give students a chance to become educated

citizens and provide them with the tools of how to live as members of a community. In addition,

children need to be educated because they are our future; they will ultimately have to make

educated decisions that will affect all of our lives in some shape or form. As children become

adults we want them to live an independent healthy successful life and be able to make

intelligent decisions by using critical thinking.

In my opinion, children learn best in a classroom where their work is displayed, are able

to work in small groups, and the teacher is easily accessible. Getting to know the students

individually and teaching them based on their individual needs rather than on a set curriculum

should promote better learning. I believe a relaxed environment where the students can sit and

have group read-aloud will encourage participation and help broaden literacy skills. When I was

a child I remember doing this activity in my kindergarten class and it helped me understand and

expand my vocabulary.

In order to ensure that all students are given equal access to learning, educators can

continue to learn and expand their knowledge on teaching all types of students. Teachers must

take the approach of knowing each and every one of their students by asking questions.

According to Peterson and Wilson (2006), Teachers must probe students understanding,

sometimes even interviewing them about their thoughts and logic (p. 119). Not only does a

teacher need to be knowledgeable in their subject but also getting to know their students

backgrounds can help them have a better understanding of their needs. A teacher can have

greater insight on what the student knows or doesnt know by asking questions that can help the

teacher later set a certain curriculum. I believe that diversity and knowing how to approach it is a

key element to a successful classroom. In addition,

I believe that all subjects are equally important for children to learn.

My goal as a future educator is to be able to give my students experiences they can take

with them into their adult lives. It is my belief that all teachers should give their students a

positive impression and outlook on education. In addition, teachers should be supportive, open

minded, motivating, and accessible.
