Being

a great teacher is like

being a great coach!

Being a good teacher is like being a good
coach. In both, the coach/teacher motivates,
inspires, builds up, and trains.

In both coaching and teaching, we must get
athletes/students to believe in themselves.

To be effective coaches/teachers, we avoid
using embarrassment and humiliation as
teaching or learning tools.

Great coaches/teachers go beyond their
sport or subject, but also are great life
teachers.

Great coaches/teachers maintain
perspective. They dont let one game, or one
test hold too much weight.

Great coaches/teachers understand their
players/students individuality and response
to different learning and adversity

situations. Similarly, great coaches/teachers take the
time to get to know their athletes/students;
and build appropriate positive relationships.

Great coaching/teaching involves being
flexible. They find ways to teach in different
ways to reach their pupils or climb over
varying obstacles.

Great coaches/teachers are great
communicators. Communication is a two-
way street, where listening goes both ways.

Great coaches/teachers involve their
athletes/students parents, family, or legal
guardians. They are proactive, rather than
reactive, knowing support from home is
important to success.

Great coaches/teachers use
athletes/students, and their own mistakes
and failures as teaching opportunities. They
teach that all make mistakes, but to treat
them as feedback and learn how to correct
them. They also take the time to look ahead
and do their best to prepare their
athletes/students for success.

Great coaches/teachers continually
challenge themselves and their
athletes/students to challenge themselves
and push their own limits.

Great coaches/teachers make learning fun
and interesting. They inspire and motivate
players/students.

Great coaches/teachers create safe learning
environments.

Great coaches/teachers are passionate about
what they do and teach; athletes/students
can tell this.

They also hold themselves to high standards
in order to be a positive role model to their
players and students. As a teacher, coach,
and Christian, we must hold ourselves to
higher expectations and standards, and let
values important to these things influence
they way we act, and how people could view
us.
