Emergency Action Plan Southwest Minnesota State Womens Tennis

Emergency Personnel:
First Responder Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)
1. Assess Unresponsive and ABCs
a. Note the time of incident, apply appropriate first aid as necessary
2. One person will stay with the athlete to provide appropriate emergency care, including
CPR and also will become spine board leader (if necessary), until the arrival of EMS
Personnel
a. The other will initiate communication with the second responder to retrieve
needed medical equipment and activation of EMS if necessary.
3. Provide pertinent information to EMS Personnel and be in charge of documentation and
recording events
4. Assist with EMS care as needed
5. Decide who will accompany the athlete to the hospital if necessary
6. Call/inform athletes parents if not already done
Second Responder Head/Assistant Coach
1. Activate EMS system if necessary Provide information to EMS Personnel
a. Call campus security (507-537-7252) and have them direct the ambulance
2. Insure retrieval of necessary emergency equipment for the first responder
3. Delegate 1 or 2 people to meet the ambulance at the appropriate site
4. Delegate appropriate personnel for crowd control
5. Return to athlete to assist as needed
Emergency Equipment:
All emergency equipment will be provided by SMSU Athletic Training.
Standard emergency equipment presented for all practices and matches are:
Medical kit
Portable AED
Splint kit Knee immobilizer, vacuum splints, cervical collar
Spine board
Ice
Specific athlete prescriptions such as asthma inhalers or Epipens (these items are given to
coaches or ATCs by athlete/and or parent with known condition)
Procedures for Specific Environmental Condition:
Lightning: At the first witnessed of lightning strike or if lightning is within a 30 miles
radius, all activity will be stopped. All participants or bystanders will be made to seek shelter
in the closet shelter (Marshall High School). The primary choice for a safe structure is any
fully enclosed, substantial building. Practice or match play may resume 30 minutes after the
last witnessed lightning strike or clap of thunder within a 30 miles radius. Time will reset if
lightning or thunder is witnessed within the 30 minute delay.
Communication:
Responder communication is delineated out in the personnel section
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
1. The second responder will activate the EMS system and will be responsible for all
communication with EMS personnel prior to their arrival at the scene
2. The first responder will be responsible for communication with EMS personnel upon
arrival of the EMS at the scene.
SMSU Womens Tennis Practice and Home Match Sites:
Fall season practice and match play (August October) will be held at the Marshall High
School Tennis Courts.
Spring season practice (January April) will be held at SMSUs R/A Facility. No match
play will be hosted at SMSU during this season.
Venue Directions:
1. Marshall High School Tennis Courts
a. Address: 400 Tiger Drive, Marshall, MN 56258
b. The tennis courts are located directly behind the high school and are next to the
softball fields.
2. SMSU R/A facility
a. Address: 1501 State Street, Marshall, MN 56258
b. The R/A facility is located on the campus of SMSU, on Mustang trail and across
from the Regional Event Center.

Calling Instructions This is (name, title) calling from Southwest Minnesota State
Universitys Athletic Training Staff. We have an emergency situation involving (# of victims,
condition, treatment initiated). We are located at the Marshall High School Tennis Courts
(give directions).
Transportation:
Non-Life Threatening: The SMSU Athletic Training Staff will not transport an injured
or ill athlete in a staff personal vehicle to the emergency room or local clinic.
Arrangements must be made by the athlete with consultation of coaching staff to
determine appropriate transportation of athlete to the medical services.
Life Threatening: The SMSU Athletic Training Staff or second responder will activate
EMS system for appropriate transportation of the injured or ill athlete to the emergency
room. At no time will an injured or ill athlete be transported in a staff personal vehicle to
the emergency room.
Documentation:
All actions and treatments pertaining to the emergency situation should be recorded by
the first responder. Appropriate documentation of the event must occur within 24 hours of
the incident and will be kept in athletes personal files at SMSU.
