Lesson Plan: Escape in 30

Teacher: Ms. Hoffman


Lesson Title: World War I Unit intro: Escape in 30
Time Frame/Length: 45 minutes (1 class period)
Subject/Course: Honors World History
Grade Level(s): 10th grade

Summary: This lesson serves as an intro to the World War I unit. The purpose of this activity is
to present the causes of WWI to the students. The activity will begin as a game for the first 30
minutes, the last 15 minutes will consist of discussing the answers to the clues. The theme is
Escape in 30 the students will be separated into 4 or 5 different groups. Each group will be
given a clue, they will then have to figure out the clue and bring it to the teacher to make sure it
is right. They will then be given the next clue. The group that escapes the quickest wins the
game. The groups will then separate to discuss the different causes for WWI.

Procedure/Instructional Strategy:
-Students will come in and share good news
-Students will be separated into 4-5 different groups, groups will be asked to take out a sheet of
paper to write down the answers to their clues
-each group will be given a different clue and the timer will start
-the students will be given time to figure out each clue
*each time they figure a clue out they have to come check to make sure it is correct before they
are given the next clue
-the group that figures out the clue first will receive a reward
-after each group figures out each clue or until there are only 15 minutes left in class
-at the end of class time will be spent explaining the answers to each clue and how they relate
to the beginning of WWI

Lesson Plan: Historical Meeting

Lesson Title: WWI Historical Meeting
Time Frame/Length: 45 minutes (1 class period)
Subject/Course: Honors World History
Grade Level(s): 10th grade

Summary: Students will begin class by taking notes and finishing up the first section of WWI.
Following the notes, students will be find a partner for an activity. The students will pull two slips
of paper out of a bag, the two slips will be names of people or countries. Students will then have
to write a conversation/skit that would happen between these two names on the slips of paper.
Students who present their skit will either receive extra credit points/an incentive.

Lesson Plan: Trench Warfare Poem Analysis

Lesson Title: WWI: Trench Warfare
Time Frame/Length: 45 minutes (1 class period)
Subject/Course: Honors World History
Grade Level(s): 10th grade

Summary: Students will finish presenting skits from Fridays historic meeting activity. Following
the remaining presentations, students will take brief notes on WWI warfare and what led to the
use of trench warfare in WWI. Students will then watch a short video on trench warfare. Then,
students be given one of two poems and questions to answer. The class will discuss these
questions if time permits at the end of class.

assessment for the students.
