Standard 2.OA.2
Fluently add and subtract within 20.
a. Add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies such as counting on; making ten (for
example, 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (for
example, 13 4 = 13 3 1 = 10 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and
subtraction (for example, knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 8 = 4); and creating
equivalent but easier or known sums (for example, adding 6 + 7 by creating the known
equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
ELL Considerations: The problems will be given verbally and written on the board. Students
will have the opportunity to use scratch paper to write their work if needed.
Preparation: Students will need a pencil and scratch paper. I will need the white board and a
variety of dry erase markers.

Adaptations: I will be sure to observe my students who are lower in math or have been
struggling with our current addition and subtraction problems. We can review visual strategies to
solve these problems. Participation is key in this lesson.
Integration: This lesson could be integrated into writing and social studies if we transform the
lesson using word problems. I would start with this basic lesson so students understand the
procedures for Number Talks, and then add more complicated problems. I could also integrate
technology by using the smart board to display student strategies. Typically, this assignment is
very math focused and is used as an introduction into the full math lesson.
