Effective Lesson Planning and Delivery Techniques

1. Making the classroom a pleasant, friendly place- I would show this by having vibrant
colors in my elementary classroom, I would like to have a theme in my room as well.
Such as a pirate or Dr. Seuss theme. I would be very comfortable with this.
2. Accept individual differences- I would make sure that each student was represented
equally and got to have a say in what we do in our classroom. I would also be
comfortable with this because I was raised accept that people will have different opinions
than me, and that is fine.
3. Learning activities should be cooperative and supportive-
4. Create a non-threatening learning environment- If a student was ever wrong about giving
and answer or not doing what was asked I would approach them in a kind matter, I
would not yell at them for being wrong or call them stupid. I am comfortable with this
because I think students should be allowed to learn in a good environment.
5. Organize physical space, eliminate situations that could be dangerous or disruptive- I
would make sure that any scientific instruments were plastic, or tempered glass. I would
be extremely careful what types of food students brought into glass because of allergies.
I would be comfortable because I want all of my students to feel safe and not be
distracted from learning.
6. Establish classroom rules and procedures and consistently reinforce them- I would have
some sort of behavior monitoring system, like having colored cards and based on
student behavior turning the cards a certain color. I am confident I will be comfortable
with this, if I dont have classroom management, there will not be much teaching going
on- or learning.
7. State quality of work desired- Give examples! Show students what I would like to see,
also just telling them verbally. I am comfortable with this because it will make both my
students lives and my own easier when doing the work and grading.
8. Have students paraphrase directions- Asking them to repeat the directions back,
especially if they are younger. I would be comfortable asking students to paraphrase
directions because it will show if they understand what they are doing.

9. Ensure that everyone is paying attention- Making sure I receive eye contact, asking
occasional questions while teaching. Comfortable because I want my students to pay
attention and make sure that they are learning.
10. Ensure that all distractions are removed- I think that its impossible to remove all
distractions, but I would remove big ones like cell phones by having students put them
away. I would be comfortable because I know it is important to have focus in the
classroom.
11. Describe expectations, activities, and evaluation procedures- I would use rubrics and
model activities that we were doing.I am comfortable because it is important that
students know what is expected of them.
12. Start with a highly motivating activity- I would find an activity to start a unit or new
subject. I think that a demonstration would suffice. I will be confident in starting with a
motivating activity. Capturing students attention is important.
13. Build lesson plan upon prior student knowledge- Taking pre-tests and assessing what
needs to be retaught after a post test is what I will use to make up some of my lesson
plans. I am comfortable because I want students to understand materials they do not.
14. Use random selection when calling upon students- Using sticks to call on students.I am
comfortable because it is the draw of the sticks and it would be fair.
15. Vary who you call and how you call them- Being aware as to what students have been
called on and how recently. I would be comfortable because I believe in all students
contributing.
16. Ask questions before calling on a student; wait at least five seconds for a response-
Letting students have time to think about what they are being asked is important. I am
comfortable because I want my students to have time to think of an intellig ent response.
17. Be animated; show enthusiasm and interest- Using your hands, having vocal variety,
actually being excited, youre imparting wisdom on todays youth! Thats awesome! I am
confident because I apparently have a bubbly personality, and I get excited easily.
18. Reinforce student efforts with praise- Telling students,Great job! and Your work looks
wonderful! I am comfortable. I love telling people their hard work is paying off.

19. Vary instructional methods- Use different classroom tools, standing in front of a class
and talking at them all day will get boring- for everyone! I would be comfortable because
I cant stand doing one thing the entire day.
20. Provide work of appropriate difficulty- Having different levels of spelling and math has
been something I have seen over the years. I would be a little cautious because I want
my students to be challenged, however I want them to do well also.
21. Demonstrate and model types of responses or tasks you want students to perform- If it
was something like a science lab that would be easy to show students what I was
looking for. I am comfortable because I think students need to be guided to a certain
degree.
22. Be aware of your teaching tempo- Taking a second during teaching to ask if I am going
too fast or too slow, being aware of whether or not my students look lost or bored. I am
comfortable because I want my students to be comfortable and not feel lost.
23. Watch for cues that children are becoming confused, bored or restless; sometimes
lessons have to be shortened- Being aware of what the children in my class are doing.
Having a little bit of a backup plan or taking a short break to reassess. I would be
comfortable because I know that children get bored and frustrated.
24. Seatwork should be diagnostic and perspective- Having students do seatwork at their
own pace. I am very comfortable because I know people need to go their own pace.
25. Developing procedures for seeking assistance- A standard hand raise for help would
suffice. Comfortable, ask for help and I will come help.
26. Develop procedures for when finished- Having a designated work hand in basket. I am
comfortable having a basket for student work.
27. Move around and monitor seatwork- Walking around my classroom and asking if anyone
has questions. Comfortable. I want my students to stay on task.
28. Vary methods of practice- Use different classroom tools. I am comfortable I don't want
my students to be bored.
29. Summarize the lesson and focus on positive gains etc..- Giving praises for students after
the lesson and providing the occasional treat. I am comfortable doing this because hard
work should be recognized.

30. Determine if the lesson was successful, were goals accomplished?- You can just see in
student faces how well the lesson went over, also using an assignment after the lesson
is a good way to see how well it went over. I want my students to do well so I am
comfortable assessing this.
31. Have materials ready for next lesson- Print out materials and have other teaching tools
at the ready. Comfortable, I want to be ready!
32. Maintain student attention until directions for next activity have been given- Eye contact,
paraphrasing of directions. Comfortable, I want smooth transitions, darn it!
33. Do not do tasks that can be performed by students- Let them grab their papers.
Comfortable. I shouldnt do everything!
34. Move around and attend to individual students- Move around, ask if students have
questions, help anyone that looked lost. Comfortable. I do not want students to feel lost.
35. Provide step-by-step instructions- If it is something like a science lab, have the steps
written up. Comfortable,I want my students to have the tools they need.
36. Utilize a freeze and listen method- Claps, whistle, I whistle to get peoples attention a lot.
Comfortable, makes getting peoples attention easy.

interesting each day! Act excited. Comfortable, I want school to be fun for my class.

students can earn little goodies or even a party for the whole class. Comfortable, good
behavior should be rewarded.

usual punishments. Comfortable, I wouldnt tolerate misbehavior much at all.
41. Handling disruptions- Acknowledge the disruptions and stop them immediately.
Comfortable, I want a good learning environment for my students.
