Department of Art Education: Visual Art Studies

University of North Texas
1155 Union Circle
Denton, TX 76203

Dear Faculty of the Department of Art Education,

My name is Erin Hain, and in this letter I am writing to inform you of my keen
interest in the Visual Art Studies program at the University of North Texas (UNT). I am
currently enrolled in Foundations of Visual Arts Studies, Professional Issues in Teaching, Art
Appreciation, and Computer Art Applications.

As a transfer student from the Alamo Colleges in San Antonio, I started my classes at
UNT with an Associate degree in Fine Arts and a GPA of 4.0. While studying in San Antonio
I was a member of the National Society of Leadership, through which I developed skills in
leading groups and activities. Before that, during my senior year of high school, I was
fortunate enough to student direct for Encore Youth Chorus, alongside Nancy Oehlert, the
senior director. It was through that experience with Ms. Nancy that I discovered my interest in
teaching. She worked with me and taught me how to combine both the technical material to
be taught, and the development of the students individually. Her passion for her work was an
inspiration.

I want to be an art educator because I believe it can be the greatest tool of the human
mind. Not only does the creative process allow people to express themselves, but it can also
connect people to foundational ideas of identity, history, family, culture, religion, and the list
goes on and on. Art education, in that light, becomes the key to inspiration, motivation, and
connection.

In the classroom I would work to promote both an individual and a collective

experience. Not only should students be able to learn from their peers, but also learn about
themselves and how they can influence others. It is my responsibility to facilitate a classroom
that is diverse in content. Every medium, whether digital or traditional should be explored.
Our society is an outpouring of stimuli, and students should be prepared and confident in
themselves to know what they will pour out in their own lives.

Lastly, it is my sincere hope that what I teach will be of meaning to each student,
motivating them to think critically about everything, not just art. Every student should have
the opportunity, and the help, to be active in their lives and communities. Art Education is the
perfect creative outlet for that. It is my goal to help them discover all that it could mean for
them.

Respectfully,
Erin Nicole Hain
Artists Statement: Erin Hain

My artwork takes both a representational and exaggerated view of nature. In my work

I try to demonstrate the awe of the natural, and all the things there are to discover; the
mystery and experience. My childhood in a multicultural city enhanced my
appreciation for how people view beauty differently, and how normalities for color
association play into artwork. My designs are both realistic and surrealistic,
depending on what Im trying to achieve and the subject matter Ive chosen. I also
just like to mess around with designs and sketches, since education has made that
habitual.

In a broad sense you could say I'm fairly traditional in my work, but I do not hold to a
specific medium. For commissions I have often stepped away from my comfortable
art, which has been invaluable for learning.

Since I am a developing artist, I use a wide range of materials. Choosing a favorite

would be like trying to pick one ice cream flavor to eat for the rest of my life. The real
determining factor for materials used is what I have in stock, and what people have
asked for in a commission setting.

My research in developing each new project is grounded in both my childhood, and

new experiences. Interests, hobbies, events, photos, etcare all used to create a piece.
Delving into a new medium results in many works created back to back using that one
medium, and eventually moving on to something new.

The experience and process is more rewarding to me than the final completed work.
As a perfectionist I am never fully pleased with a piece so I take joy from the time
and effort I put into the process. The fulfillment of creation and inspiration is a gift.
Continuous learning is a lifestyle I aspire to.
