Student Learning Outcomes

We as writing teachers are aware that all of these SLOs are connected in some way and perhaps occur at the same
time. We are also aware that, while writing, each person is thinking critically and is using rhetoric skills in their own
way, whether that be through complex or simple forms of writing. Separating each of these SLOs will help students
better understand each in order for everyone to use in First Year Writing (FYW) and for all eternity.

Rhetorical Knowledge
This complex idea of rhetorical knowledge means that one is able to remember and apply different reading/writing
strategies throughout their time in FYW. Using ones own individual process when writing can improve that
persons understanding on how multiple approaches impact the piece as a whole.
By the end of FYW, SWBAT:
Use their rhetorical knowledge to write a variety of texts for specific audiences.
Develop skills that allow ones writing to be flexible depending on the situation.
Use genre to ones advantage when writing and how specific genres effect styles.

Critical Reading
Similar to critical thinking, critical reading is the ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate while reading. Writers
must think critically in this way to ensure that their writing makes connections and uses evidence to its advantage.
By the end of FYW, SWBAT:
Use reading to learn and discover how to write better.
Analyze works of writing critically, whether it be their own or others.
Gain primary and secondary research materials for credibility and accuracy purposes.

Composing Processes
Composing processes, or multiple strategies, is something writers use to develop their work. These multiple
strategies are flexible and always changing to ensure that the writers are successful in their research and process.
By the end of FYW, SWBAT:
Demonstrate this flexibility for drafting, revising and finalizing work.
Become aware of the social aspect in the writing process - brainstorm sessions and evaluating
others responses while responding themselves.
Use their process to deepen their love with personal ideas and the ideas of others in order to
strengthen arguments and claims.

Knowledge of Conventions
With knowledge of conventions comes an understanding of correctness in the text. Conventions govern things like
mechanics, grammar, spelling and citations along with an influence on content, organization and style.
By the end of FYW, SWBAT:
Investigate how conventions for structure, formatting and mechanics vary in texts.
Use concepts such as copyright and fair use to apply good citations practices in their own work.
Develop the knowledge and skills to have good grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Critical Reflection
A writers ability to effectively say what he or she is thinking is a form of critical reflection. The writer, when
critically reflecting, can explain their choices and address revisions from feedback given on their piece.
By the end of FYW, SWBAT:
Know how to reflect on their own writing in various situations.
Use writing to reflect and realize that reflection is a crucial part of learning and communicating.
Demonstrate an awareness of their process and knowledge of conventions.
