Working with a partner, using words from the word wall students will write
what they think each word means and the strategy you used to find the
meaning. They will explain to the class how they determined the
meanings of these words with their partner.
Students will individually revise their main idea sticky notes, students
then locate two to three details from the text that support this main idea
and record these into the right hand column next to the main idea for this
section of the text.
They will then work independently and use details in the text to confirm as
correct or incorrect on what they inferred from the visuals of these
animals to fill out the third column in their workbook.

The spiny pufferfish. Use the vocabulary
strategies to determine the meaning of the
following words: habitats, sluggish, and
inflates. Write what you think each word
means and the strategy used to find the
meaning. Students will then share with their Active learning over passive learning

determine the meaning of each word: coral
reef habitats suggests that the word habitat
is a place, like a coral reef, where this animal
lives. so I think habitat means where an
animal lives. Sluggish sounds like the word
slug and the suffix ish means like, so I think
sluggish swimmer means it swims slow, like
a slug. When I read the word inflate, I
inferred this word means get bigger,
because right after the word, the text says,
three times the size.
The task that students will be doing is that they will be finding the main idea
of the text and details that help support that idea. While doing this they
know and can look on the board for many strategies for finding the meanings
of words. This will help ELL students because some of these words may be
difficult. The teacher will also be modeling how to find these details, writing
them out, and showing it on the document camera so all the students know
what is expected of them. They will also get plenty of time to work on this
and class and can also use partners. I think that will really help the students
that are still learning English because they may not understand it fully and
working with someone next to them can help them feel more confident.
