Tutorial Mass Transfer 2 solutions

1. Air at 40C, 30% relative humidity and 1 atm flows over a 8-m-long and 2-m width wet plate with an average
velocity of 6.5 m/s in order to dry the surface. Using the analogy between heat and mass transfer, determine the
mass transfer coefficient on the plate and the total rate of drying in kgs-1.

Solution:
2. Water flows through a thin tube, whose walls are lightly coated with benzoic acid (C 7H6O2). The water flows
slowly, at 298 K and 0.1cms-1.The pipe is 1cm in diameter.
Under these conditions (the flow is possibly of laminar type), equation

where v is the average fluid velocity and B s is the equilibrium solubility concentration.

(b) What is the average concentration of benzoic acid in the water after a length of pipe of 2 m. The solubility of
benzoic acid in water at 298 K is 0.003 gcm-3 and the mass diffusivity is 1.24510-9 m2s-1.

(c) Find the total mass of benzoic acid dissolved per second (hence, in kgs -1)
Solution:
3. Pure water at 25C is flowing at a velocity of 3.05 ms -1 in a tube having an inside diameter of 10 mm. The
tube is 2 m long having the walls coated with benzoic acid (C 7H6O2). Assuming that the velocity profile is fully
developed, calculate the average concentration of benzoic acid at the outlet. The solubility of benzoic acid in
water is 0.02948 kgm-3. The diffusivity of benzoic acid is 1.24510-9 m2s-1.

Determine:

(a) the average mass transfer coefficient in ms -1,

(b) The average benzoic acid concentration at the outlet.

(c) the log-mean driving force for mass transfer in molar concentration units,

(d) the total mass of benzoic acid dissolved per second (hence, kgs -1)
Solution:
4. A water-soaked 10 cm10 cm square sponge is experiencing parallel
dry air flow over its surface. The average convection heat transfer
coefficient of dry air at 20C flowing over the sponge surface is
estimated to be 30 Wm-2K-1, and the sponge surface is maintained at
30C. If the sponge is placed under an array of radiant lamps,
determine (a) the rate of evaporation of water from the sponge and (b)
the net radiation heat transfer rate. (c) What was the source of the heat
required for evaporation of the water from the sponge?

Solution:
5.
(a) In a manufacturing facility, 60 cm60 cm wet brass plates coming out of a water bath are to be dried by passing them through a section where dry air at 1
atm and 25 C is blown parallel to their surfaces at 5 m/s. If the plates are at 15C and there are no dry spots,
determine the rate of evaporation from both sides of a plate.

(b) Next it happened that the fan (which blowing the 5 ms -1 airstream) stopped its work due to electrical short
circuiting. Make assumptions and determine the rate of evaporation at such unfortunate circumstances.
