Late 1970s1980s
Mobile Suit Gundam debuted in 1979 and the first Gunpla kits came in 1980, following the
show's cancellation. Nearly every mecha in the series was made into a model kit, from mobile
suits to support aircraft and space battleships. Parts came in up to three different colored sprues.
These kits lacked articulation and detail, and required glue and paint to build and finish.
Mid 1980s1990s
Following a line of kits from the Round Vernian Vifam series, the 1985 Mobile Suit Zeta
Gundam kit line incorporated the use of polycaps (soft plastic, typically Polyethylene) as
connectors for better articulation of joints. The 1987 Gundam Sentinelmodel line introduced the
concept of snap-fit models, reducing the need to use glue. And starting from the 1988 Mobile
Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack line, all Gunpla kits feature snap-fit assembly.
2000s
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED introduced a new type of non-graded (NG) 1:144 model, with a
completely different design plan. While these still feature snap-fit and color molding, they omit
major joints, opting instead to only allow critical pieces to movetypically the neck, hips,
shoulders, and feet. These are budget models, usually retailing much lower than other models;
and this line was extensive, covering nearly every machine to be featured in the TV
series. Gundam SEED also featured non graded 1:100 models, identical in quality to Bandai's
High Grade offerings. It was also during this decade that the term "Gunpla" was coined by
Bandai.
2011
In 2011, Bandai released the Entry Grade (EG) line, a low-cost model series similar to the 1:144
NG and FG lines and is sold only in parts of Asia. Unlike other kits of the same scale, all EG kits
are made in China. The series was discontinued after its first run. Back in Japan, Bandai
introduced the Advanced Grade (AG) line for Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, a budget line that
focuses more on the arrangement of colored parts; thus sacrificing more articulation than the
previous budget lines. The AG line incorporates a microchip that enables collectors to use the kit
in the Gage-ing arcade game.[2]
Plastic
Plastic Gundam model kits are manufactured in Japan or China by Bandai, which has an
exclusive license in manufacturing and marketing them around the world. The models are typical
of Plastic models; sprues of injection-molded Polystyrene (PS) parts which must be cut out
before assembly. The majority of post-1990 models have snap-fit parts, with models prior to that
requiring an adhesive such as plastic cement.
Problems

In scientific disciplines, a toy problem[1][2] or a puzzlelike problem[3] is a problem that is not of

immediate scientific interest, yet is used as an expository device to illustrate a trait that may be
shared by other, more complicated, instances of the problem, or as a way to explain a particular,
more general, problem solving technique.

For instance, while engineering a large system, the large problem is often broken down into
many smaller toy problems which have been understood in good detail. Often these problems
distill a few important aspects of complicated problems so that they can be studied in isolation.
Toy problems are thus often very useful in providing intuition about specific phenomena in more
complicated problems.

Wooden Vehicles and Traffic Signs, a basic toy created by Wilton, CT-based Melissa and Doug,
LLC, has been named the 2010 best Toy to Inspire Mindful Play and Nurture Imagination
(TIMPANI). The research results of the 2010 TIMPANI Toy Study were announced recently by
faculty and student researchers at Eastern Connecticut State Universitys Center for Early
Childhood Education (CECE).

The high-scoring Wooden Vehicles and Traffic Signs toy set includes a variety of painted
wooden vehicles, including a fire truck and ambulance. It also includes 10 common traffic signs
that children may be familiar with, such as a stop sign. TIMPANI researchers noted that children
playing with the toy engaged in high levels of language and social interaction. Children also
exhibited unexpected creative play, even using the container that the vehicles came in to
construct garages and bridges.
The results of this study should give pause to parents and teachers who believe that children
today need high-tech, complex toys in order to learn, said Jeffrey Trawick-Smith, the Phyllis
Waite Endowed Chair of Early Childhood Education at Eastern. He is the principal investigator
of the TIMPANI toy study, and also engaged Eastern students in the research project.
This simple, beautiful, wooden toy set engaged children in almost every type of play behavior
that is useful for development: solving problems, pretending, communicating with peers and
staying engaged for long periods, said Trawick-Smith. He previously had announced the study
findings at the annual meeting of the National Association for the Education of Young Children
Anaheim, CA, last week.
This first Annual TIMPANI Toy Study is intended to identify toys that best promote the
intellectual, social and creative development of children, said Eastern President Elsa Nez. I
applaud Professor Trawick-Smith and his students for this ground-breaking research. I cannot
think of a more important research field than early childhood education, for the work our faculty
and students are doing to build strong foundations for young children will last a lifetime.

Parents, teachers, faculty and students at Eastern screened and selected several toys, placed them
in a preschool classroom, and videotaped how children interacted with the toy. The toys were
rated using a scientific instrument developed by faculty. Wooden Vehicles and Traffic Signs
came out on top.
The TIMPANI Toy Study will be an annual empirical study that looks at how young children in
natural settings play with a variety of toys to examine which toys best promote childrens
development in three areas: thinking and learning; social interaction and cooperation; and self-
expression and imaginative play. timpani student.JPG In addition to providing useful
information to parents and teachers about toys, the TIMPANI Toy Study provides opportunities
for Eastern students to participate in research. It was very interesting to see that such a simple
toy made such a big difference in the classroom, said Eliza Welling, a senior from Marlborough
majoring in sociology who also is pursuing certification in early childhood education. You
dont, as a teacher, have to include all these high-end toys that everyone is saying are amazing.
Letting students use their imagination and create their own world is actually more important.
Other students participating in the research project included Heather Russell, a psychology and
early childhood education major from Lisbon who graduated in 2009; Huihui Yu, a graduate
student from Mansfield majoring in early childhood education; Ashlee Marouski, a graduate
student from Mansfield majoring in early childhood education; and Niloufar Rezai; a graduate
student from Manchester majoring in early childhood education.

Benefits

Educational Benefits of Providing Toys To Children

Kids love toys. If you have any doubts about that, just take a child into a toy store. She
will probably find a number of things that she feels she just cant live without.

Toys are more than just fun and games for kids. Most toys provide at least some opportunity for
children to learn. The best toys engage a childs senses, spark their imaginations and encourage
them to interact with others.

Babies and Toys Babies are eager to learn about the world around them, and they have much to
learn. Every new shape, color, texture, taste and sound is a learning experience for them. Giving
your baby toys that are safe and stimulating will help him discover his senses. Rattles and toys
that make music are favorites of infants. Toys with contrasting colors are fascinating to babies
and stimulate their developing vision. As they grow, infants can use toys to explore object
permanence and cause and effect relationships. They also need objects such as blocks to help
them build motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Toys for Toddlers Toddlers can play with a wider variety of toys than they did when they were
smaller. They might still enjoy some of the toys they played with as babies, and thats fine. The
same blocks they played with a year or two ago can provide them with new and different
educational opportunities as their knowledge expands. But they also need toys that are designed
with kids their age in mind. Shape sorters are great for toddlers. They teach them how to match
similar items and provide parents the opportunity to teach them the names of the shapes. Lego
blocks provide an opportunity to learn more about colors and symmetry while they develop their
motor skills.

Toys for Preschool and School-Aged Children When children reach preschool age, its time to
start learning about letters, numbers and language skills. There are lots of toys that encourage
this type of learning, from simple alphabet puzzles to high-tech electronic gadgets. These can
give your child a head start by introducing her to the things she will be learning in school. Kids
who are in school can supplement their learning with fun and educational toys. Giving them the
opportunity to have fun while practicing the things they are learning in school will increase their
retention of those things. And when your child finds an educational toy she really likes, she will
be more likely to play with it, reinforcing the things she has learned.

Children can learn a lot from playing. When you give your child educational toys and play with
them with her, it gives her a chance to bond with you, learn, and have fun at the same time. And
making education enjoyable will help your child retain the things she learns and develop a
positive attitude toward learning.

Detailed Review

Toy Description

The hard plastic clinic can open up the roof to hold small pieces. Six doors, each with its own
color coded key, opens up to hold one of the two stuffed animals included in this set.

Set includes clinic case with carrying handle, stuffed cat, stuffed dog, key ring with six keys,
stethoscope, thermometer, mirror, syringe, and pair of tweezers.

The stethoscope does not function, and is only used as a prop for pretend play.

Dimensions: 12 X 4.5 X 10 inches

Play

Children can pretend to nurse sick their furry friends back to health. The six working keys
challenge and build hand-eye coordination skills.

The roof of the clinic case opens up to store the accessories.

Observations

Getting mostly great reviews from users, this toy seems to appeal to children in two ways.

The use of keys is almost always intriguing, and for the most part, the doors on this set lock and
unlock with enough ease that even very young children should be able to make them work
without much difficulty. This does require some coordination to begin with, and for this reason
we agree with the manufacturers recommended age of 2 years and over.

As well as the kinesthetic enjoyment brought on by keys and locks, focusing on taking care of
sick animals is something that can help nurture an increased sense of empathy, as well as
confidence a child may have that their actions matter.

Many users report this being a toy that young children enjoy playing with for over an hour at a
time on their own, but that sharing may be difficult. After all, there is only one set of keys, so a
little bit of tension may arise from arguing over who gets to use them.

Slightly older children (4-6 years) are better at sharing, and many users report this toy becoming
a central prop used in pretend scenarios. Watching children play Animal Hospital can sometimes
become a rather moving drama. Will Rover ever be able to fetch again? Will Sir Mittens III
recover from that awful incident involving many, many skeins of yarn? Playing out narratives is
a great way for children to be imaginative and explore their own creative energy.

We would like to mention that a few children may decide to use this toy as a jail rather than a
clinic. These pretend dramas may play out differently.

Included accessories, such as the syringe and thermometer add to the overall pretend-ability of
this toy, though a few users have felt these accessories look a little cheap. We havent found that
to be the case in our opinion, but we understand if some people really get a kick out of having
more realistic looking props.

Overall, the accessories are solid, heavy enough to feel stable in a childs hand, and not flimsy.
The stethoscope is non-functional, which may be a little disappointing for some children.

The two stuffed animals that come with the toy are cute, super soft, and can be tossed in the
washing machine for cleaning. They appear well made, and we are not concerned with the
stitching coming undone during normal play.

The case is sturdy, and the doors do not fall off, even when being dropped off a counter onto a
wood floor.
The compartments are large enough that a toddler can fit their fist (or at least most of it) into the
area to retrieve a toy. The included stuffed animals have to be squished to fit into the space,
which may flatten their shape over time.

Aside from the pretend play, and the fun of locks and keys, this toy also gives children a chance
to see what all can be fit into the compartments. Our favorite finds have been loose change, small
bugs, not-so-small bugs, dirt, rocks, and pet food.

We did note a few mentions of trouble with the keys. Each key is color coordinated to the door
that it opens, but there have been a few instances of the keys not matching the right door. This
can be fixed by getting out a screwdriver and manually removing and replacing the door to the
correct colored lock. Alternately, any set that does not have the correct alignment of keys and
doors can be sent back to the place of purchase and switched out for a correct set.

Though the case is supposed to latch shut and be carried by the attached handle, some users
found the latch to be insufficiently secure enough to be held by the handle.

Care

Stuffed animals can be washed in the washing machine, or with a damp rag
Plastic case and accessories can be wiped down with a damp rag
