Photos

In this picture, Im giving directions and showing T how to play the

game. Im pointing out each shape before he begins (Modeling).

T. is sorting each button by shape and saying the name of each shape
out loud. T. is also showing his ability to group similar items together and
recognition of similar items.

T is showing me how to make a triangle with his fingers. He is also

showing recognition of simple shape in the environment.
T. is being scaffold up by showing him and added shape (orange
octagon) and asked to say the color also.

T. is being showed an added shape (yellow rhombus) and asked to say

the shape and color. (Scaffold up)

T. was asked to show 5 fingers and he did. He is showing awareness of

numbers in a personally meaningful context.

T. is counting fingers one by one. He is showing his one to one

correspondence and his counting skills.

T. is counting out the monkey mask plates one by one. He is showing

his one to one correspondence and his counting skills.
Response to Analysis Questions
1. Overall I believe my sorting game went well. I used my shape button sorting
game and Storytelling props of the 5 Monkey mask plates. My child was really
involved. He did all the shape sorting by his self, so I had to scaffold up
during this game. It showed me he knows more shapes than what I had. So I
encouraged him to say the colors and try to show me some shapes with his
fingers. He enjoyed the circle song and added making circle shape with his
hands as I singed. T. said his dad helps him with his shape and colors all the
time. This activity was age appropriated because I could see several
knowledges like: awareness of numbers in a personally meaningful context,
one to one correspondence, counting skills, group similar items together and
recognition of similar items.
2. My child was really involved and showed that he was above target geometry,
mathematics and his number and operations. I could tell he loved to do
things with his dad and one on one. By him sorting all the shapes without any
help or hesitation. It showed me his grouping skills and knowledge of shapes.
T. also showed me is his awareness of numbers in a personally meaning by
telling me he was 4 and held up 4 fingers when he said it.
3. Overall my observation went well but in some way I feel like I could have
added another challenge for T. I dont know what but he mastered all of my
scaffolding up challenges. Especially when I showed him some added shapes
that was not in the game and asking what colors they were. T. answered all
questions. But overall he loved the Circle and 5 little Monkeys song. He just
smiled and gave me his undivided attention, which was great.
4. In doing this observation I would say T. is on and above his target. He is dead
on with his grouping and knowledge of all shapes, by him sorting the buttons
without any help. And doing them correctly. T. answered all scaffolding
questions without any problems. He went through them so fast I almost didnt
have anything for him to do. So next time, I will prepare myself with a little
more tricks (challenges) in my bag.
5. By understanding math is everywhere and that almost anything can teach
math, helped me to understand adult guided activities, being prepared and
scaffolding. By providing things like language, materials, modeling, games
and just time for children to explorer engages them to think and process.
When we do these things we realized children know more about math than
what we think they know. Give them time to reflect and self-correct helps
children to figure out their own solutions or explanations on their own.

Next steps
1. M-4K-4.1 Identify two-dimensional shapes: circle. Square. Triangle and
rectangles. The child will be able to make connections with shapes in the
environment. ( a house could be made with two shapes-triangle and
square)
2. M-4k-4.2 Represent simply two-dimensional geometric shapes. The child
will be able to make a connection to a drawing of the sun and understand
that a circle is represented in that drawing.
Family information page
Geometry for preschoolers includes patterns and
shapes, each with its own unique features.
Two suggestions for the family to do at home
1. At the grocery store, ask your child to find items that
are triangles, circles, rectangles, and other shapes.
2. Organize a scavenger hunt where your child has to
find objects of different shapes.
3. Ask your child to recognize or stack the groceries you
bought by container shape or organize by size.
