Essential Question: What are the parts of a plant?

Curriculum Standards Addressed:

SC Academic Standard(s):

Standard 1.L.5: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how the structures of plants help
them survive and grow in their environments.

SC Performance Indicator(s):

1.L.5A.1 Obtain and communicate information to construct explanations for how different plant
structures (including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds) help plants survive, grow, and
produce more plants.

Indicate how at least one the following are incorporated into the lesson:

Science Content:
1.L.5A. Conceptual Understanding: Plants have specific structures that help them survive, grow,
and produce more plants. Plants have predictable characteristics at different stages of development.

Safety:
There are no safety needs in this lesson

Procedures Differentiation of the Content,

Process, or Product
Engagement:
The teacher will start the lesson by having real-
world examples of a plant (seeds, small plant,
larger version of plant)
The teacher will ask students what this is and For students who learn better
guide them to answer plant. visually, a real-world example of a
The teacher will then set the purpose of learning: plant will be shown and video will be
o Today we will be learning about the played
different parts of plants and their major
functions. This plant has many different
parts with their own functions that make up
the whole plant.
Exploration:
The students will be shown a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3St51F4kE8
The video explains the different part of plants:
(some of the parts will not be elaborated on)
o Flower: most beautiful part. Usually
colorful and attracts bees and other insects
o Leaves: one of the most important parts.
Has green pigment called chlorophyll
which absorbs sunlight to make food
o Seeds: where the plants grow from, can be
in fruits or in the center of the flower.
o Stem: acts like a pillar to hold the plant
upright and carries water, food and
minerals to different parts of the plant from
the roots
Revised 1.7.2017
o Roots: helps absorb water and minerals
from soil and acts as an anchor to hold the
plant firm in the soil so that the plant
doesnt get carried away.
After the video the students will whisper turn and
talk about one function of each plant part. For
example:
o The roots act as an anchor to keep the
plant from blowing away.
Teacher will call on a few pairs to communicate
their answers with their peers.
Explanation:

On the first side of the Parts of a Plant sheet there

are six categories listed

o Seeds
o Flower
o Stem
o Leaf
o Roots
The students will mostly dictate (with guided help
from the teacher) what to write under those
categories.
Together the teacher and class will fill out the six
categories.

Elaboration:
Students will independently complete the back
side of the worksheet.
o Students will use the word bank to label the
different parts of the plants and color the
picture.
o Seed
o Flower
o Stem
o Leaf For students who finish early, they

The teacher will go over the answers as a class, then go back to add more details.
using popsicle sticks and whole class responses to
fill in the blanks.

Evaluation (Assessment):
The teacher will call students by sides (north,
south, east and west) while the rest of the class is
working independently on the worksheet to get a

closer look at the real-world plant.
Students will quietly identify the different plant
parts and name some of the major functions.
