Running head: Management Plan 1

Management Plan

Cindy Teague

University of Utah
Preamble

In an ever-changing world, there is a constant need to learn and understand new ideas and

concepts in order to best succeed. In an ideal community, citizens work together and motivate

each other to reach great heights. In teaching, I believe this applies and rings true. In my

classroom, I will greatly emphasize how we are all apart of a community and more specifically

our classroom community. My students will be expected to treat their peers with respect and

encourage each other. In doing so, we can all learn new ideas, concepts and grow together as a

team.

In my classroom, instruction will be exciting, innovating and challenging. Not one lesson

will be made fit for all students since everyones learning style differs. Learning can and will be

enjoyable. I passionately believe in student-centered instruction where students will be actively

participating rather than passively learning. Lessons will be hands-on and applicable to real-life

situation. My hope is to create an environment that is learner conducive, safe and fun for all my

students.

In order to have an environment such as this, an appropriate classroom management is

necessary. Expectations, rules and responsibilities must be understood and followed by all

students in order to create said environment. I know as these things are put into place, a

classroom will run smoothly, efficiently and appropriately. My hope as a future educator is to

provide opportunities for all students to thrive and achieve great success.
Preventative Techniques

Classroom Expectations (Rules)

During the first week of school, beginning on the first day, we will create classroom

expectations. Students will help create these expectations with guidance from the teacher. All

student input is welcomed and respected. We then will vote on the top 5-7 expectations. The

purpose of having student driven expectations is so that students have a sense of connection to

these rules since they created them (P. McCandless, 2016). These rules will be permanently

posted in the classroom throughout the year. During the first week, and additional weeks as

needed, we will go back and review the classroom expectations.

In addition to the classroom rules, there will be an umbrella rule that encompasses all of

the expectations created. That number one rule or motto is RESPECT. This will be posted at the

front of the class above the classroom expectations. The sign will be large and bolded so that

students and teacher can refer back to throughout the year as needed. It is important to teach

expectations, review them and reinforce them in order for rules to be remembered (NEA.org

1999).

Attention Management

I will use different attention cues that will be taught at the beginning of the year. Students

will be familiar with these cues to quickly get their attention and bring them back to the task at

hand.

Community Meeting

After morning work, the class will join at the carpet for our daily community meeting.

During this time, we will go over the days schedule and discuss any important business. Daily

schedule will always be posted on the board with time and subject scheduled. The daily routine
will always be posted on the board so that students know what to expect throughout the day.

Students do better with a routine tend to dislike surprises in an educational setting

(P.McCandless, 2016). This will be the time where students can talk in whole group and discuss

any questions they may have.

Jobs

Jobs will be assigned to students weekly. Each student will be rotated through the

different job lists by alphabetical order. The jobs list will be posted in the classroom so students

can refer to. Having jobs in the classroom creates a belonging and accountability for all students.

Being apart of the classroom community, all students must have responsibilities. Jobs will be

reviewed during morning work every Monday.

Zoologist
Electrician
Sanitation Specialist
Utensil Manager
Gardener
Ambassador
Athletic Director
Maintenance Crew
Materials Manager

Classroom Economy

A classroom economy will be taken place in my classroom. I will introduce this concept

to the students and connect it to real world situations. Those who have a job in the community

receive a compensation for their work. Students will also learn how to earn class bucks as they
complete their job responsibilities at the end of the week. Students will have a checkbook to

keep track of their earnings. There will be a class store where students can choose to purchase

items with their bucks. The classroom store will be held every other Friday before the end of the

school day. Students will also have the opportunity to earn money by turning in homework on

time, perfect attendance, meeting monthly reading goals, exemplary behavior, caught being kind

etc. I would adjust opportunities to earn money based on the needs/desire of the class. Having a

classroom economy teaches students how to apply this knowledge in practice. By bringing in

real world scenarios into the classroom, students see the impact of their decisions to save, spend

and budget. A classroom economy is also a great motivation for students to fulfill their

responsibilities.

Positive Classroom Environment

It is important to model and promote positive behavior. A recurring phrase in the class

will be Be Kind, a simple but powerful phrase. Students will be reminded on a daily basis to be

kind to one another and to respect their peers. This phrase will coincide with our RESPECT

motto. These expectations will be set at the very beginning of the year and I will model the desire

behavior. Students will be held to these standards and are expected to adhere. Students will also

have the opportunity to earn class bucks if caught being kind and showing respect to others.

Classroom Arrangement
All posters and students work will be strategically placed at eye level. This will show

students that the information is important rather than insignificant and posted high well above

eye view (P. McCandless, 2016). Student created work will be posted throughout the classroom

as well as student generated labels of objects an equipment in the room, i.e., clock, calendar,

library. These labels can also be done in a second language, preferably any language that is

spoken by ELLs in the class. The student desks will be arranged in a U shape as shown below.
This arrangement sustains easy proximity. This can be changed based on characteristics and

behavior of students as well.

Supportive Techniques

Behavior Chart

A student behavior pocket chart will be utilized in the classroom. Each student will begin

on a green card and move to yellow for warning, orange for second warning and red for office

referral. Behavior chart will keep students accountable for their behavior.

Proximity

Proximity will help students hone back in when they get distracted or is in engaging in

inappropriate behavior. By simply positioning myself in the classroom, walking over and

standing next to the student may be all they need to get their attention back (Forlini and

Brinkman 2013).

Time of Task
Studies have shown that the more time students are engaged, the higher they achieve

(Feaweb.org). Instruction should be engaging, interactive and motivating for students to attain

high time of task points.

Intervention Techniques

One-on-One Conferences

It is important for me to have one-on-one conferences with all my students, especially if

it is concerning behavior. Giving attention to that student and truly listening to what they have to

say and feel will give me a better understanding of the situation and will help me assess what (if

applicable) plans need to be in place. This also gives students a sense of belonging and gives

them the opportunity to voice their concerns directly to me.

Go to Australia

When students are having a hard time, sometimes all they need is a little think time or

time to calm down. There will be a designated area in the classroom called Australia where

students can go to think about their behavior with Kangaroo Jack (stuffed animal) who will help

them calm down.

Wait Time

As I am teaching, when students are being disrespectful and talking while Im talking, I

will wait. I will not talk over students. I will wait for their respect and then continue. This

shows students that I mean business and what I have to say is important. It also reinforces our

RESPECT motto.
Complaint Box

If students have a hard time with tattling or complaining, there is a complaint box in

Australia where they can write down their frustrations, complaints and concerns and put them in

the box. I will check the complaint box at the end of the day, and will address them if necessary

at our daily community meeting.

Contracts

Contracts can be created specific to student behavior. Within a contract, student will

create a goal with me that will better help them with their behavior. Contracts will be simple and

easy to follow. An example will be a small post-it note on the corner of their desk that tallys the

number of times a student is on task. If the student meets the required goal, they may get a prize,

a class buck, free read time or anything that they like to do as a reward for meeting their goals.

Phone Calls Home

If inappropriate behavior continues, a phone call will be made home.

Procedures

During the first week of school, we will review procedures, procedures, and procedures.

In the classroom, we will have procedures for just about everything. Below is a list of specific

procedures that students will be expected to learn and know.

Morning Starts
Every morning, students are to come into the classroom quietly and put their backpacks and

coats in the designated area. Whether that is in a locker, on a hanging hook or cubbies. Students

will then grab their morning worksheet out of the designated basket and work on that the first 10

minutes of class. These worksheets will mostly be review from the previous year at first.

Worksheets will differ from week to week. Language Arts and Math worksheets will alternate

each week.

Lining Up

Students will line up in number order. Each student will have an assigned number that they

will be identified by in various ways in the classroom. Students are to memorize their number

and use it when they line up.

Bathroom/Water Breaks

Specific hand signals will be taught when students need to use the bathroom or get a

drink of water. When students need to use the bathroom, they will raise their hand and signal b

in sign language. When students need to get a drink of water, they will signal w in sign

language.

Leaving the Room for bathroom or Resource

When student leave the room, there will be a clip chart next to the door that says In and

Out as shown below. Every morning as students come in to the class, they will move their clip

to in to show me who is here and who is not. As students leave the class for any reason either
for the bathroom, the office or resource, students will move their clip to the out box. Students

will not need to move their clip when the whole class leaves together.

Pencil Sharpening

Students will be given a pencil pouch at the beginning of the year. In their pencil pouch will

be 2 sharpened pencils and 1 mechanical pencil. The students are to use the given pencils and

only the mechanical pencil as an emergency pencil. There will not be any pencil sharpening

during class. If students need a sharpened pencil, they can use their emergency pencil or quickly

grab an already sharpened pencil from the pencil bucket. Next to that bucket will be a dull

pencil bucket that they can put their dull pencils in. The assigned Utensils Manager of the week

will sharpen these pencils at the end of the week.

Materials/safety

Students will be shown where materials are located in the classroom, how to use scissors and

glue correctly.

Turning work in
There will be a math, writing, homework and misc bin for students to turn work in.

Homework

Students will have a homework packet sent home every Monday. This packet will then

be returned on Fridays. Students will be given time during the school day in study hall to work

on unfinished assignments or homework if they are caught up.

End of Day

At the end of the day, students will be given a study hall time to catch up on unfinished

work or work on homework. All students who stayed on green behavior will receive a class

buck. Students who moved colored cards will fill out a card in the color they moved to that

explains why their card was changed. Students will make sure the floor around their desk is

cleaned, cubbies cleared out and chairs stacked on the desks.

Communication with Parents

Communication is vital between parents and guardians. Parents need to know what is

happening in the classroom and know what their students are learning in class day to day.

Communication can be done in many forms; some may be better than others for your parents.

Phone calls, emails, text, notes sent home and classroom blog are all communication forums I

will use to reach out to my classroom parents.

Letter of Introduction

The very first form of communication with parents will be an introductory letter. Before

school starts, I will send an introductory letter to all of my parents. This letter will introduce
myself as their students teacher as well as outline what their students school year will look like

in my class. This will be a broad overview to give an idea for parents. My contact information

will be provided on there as well so that parents are welcomed to contact me with any questions.

Classroom Blog/Website

My class will have a classroom blog/website. Here, parents can access at any time to find

out important dates, curriculum plans, what were working on and to view their student work. I

will have a tab for resources available as well with any information they could use pertaining to

their childs education as well as community resources. There will also be a page where students

can submit their work so that parents can see and read their accomplishments.

Monthly Newsletter

A monthly newsletter will go home with important dates and any information about

happenings in the school. A breakdown on the weeks lessons will also be noted on the

newsletter.

SEP Conferences

SEP Conferences will be held twice a year. Parents will have the opportunity to sit with

me one-on-one to talk about their students achievements and successes. Students work will be

presented at the meeting and the student is encouraged to come. Any behavioral issues and

concerns may be addressed at this time as well. Parents are welcome to voice their concerns and

provide me with any tips or suggestions to better help teach their child.
