Rationale Statement Standard #7
Statement of Standard 7: Planning for Instruction
The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning
goals by drawing up knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and
pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context (Professional
Development in New Jersey, 2014, pg. 9).
Name of Artifact: Lesson Plan
Date of Artifact: March 8, 2017
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
For artifact 7, I had to create a lesson plan. This lesson plan will be used for a high school
Introduction to Art class. The lesson specifically is about lighting and shading. I will provide a
PowerPoint presentation to give the lesson and then have a worksheet for them to do in order to
supplement what they learned. This artifact relates to the performances section 7.i.6 which states
the teacher evaluates plans in relation to short- and long-range goals and systematically adjusts
plans to meet each students learning needs and enhance learning (Professional Development in
New Jersey, 2014, pg. 10). The short-range goal would come with the assessment that the
students will work on right after the lesson is over. This will check to see if the students
understand the basics of shading. The long-range goal coincides with the portfolio that the
students will hand in at the end of the semester. After each lesson, the students have to create an
art piece. These projects will then be compiled into a portfolio at the end of the semester that will
count as their final. The art project will approach the lesson in more depth, which in turn will
show how well the students really grasp the concept. Of course the short-term goal will also
allow me to have insight on where each student stands on the lesson, and I will be able to adjust
what I teach accordingly.
While creating this artifact, I learned that teachers have a community within their job. If a
teacher needs resources or opinions on a lesson, there is no shortage of information. Teaching is
a profession where asking for help is encouraged. Every teacher has a different experience and a
person can learn a lot by just talking to another teacher about their worst class, or their best class.
If a person is not sure if something will work, chances are there is some form of answer out
there. I see so many situations where people are floundering, because they are afraid to ask for
help, but there does not seem to be any of those hesitances with teachers. I learned this, because
when I was having trouble thinking of a lesson there was an abundance of information online
from different teachers in different grade levels on what lessons they like.
In future classes that I will teach I am going to be teaching about lighting and shading. I
do not doubt that over the years I will change and edit this lesson plan, but until that happens I
will use this. The lesson plan follows the standards and has everything down that I will need for
the shading lesson. The only reason I would not be able to use this lesson plan is if the standards
change, but even then I can still use it as a reference point to learn from.
