and nearly all white blossoms. The flowers are among the smallest of the
genus. The broadly elliptical dorsal sepal is 1.0 in. (2.5 cm) long by 1.3 in. (3.3
cm) wide. Large lateral sepals are obliquely half-moon to egg-shaped,
sharply pointed at the tip, recurved, and rolled inward along the margin. They
are 2.4 in. (6 cm) long by 1.6 in. (4 cm) wide. The wavy petals are 1.2 in. (3
cm) long by 0.3 in. (0.8 cm) wide. The lip, which is about 1.8 in. (4.7 cm) high
overall. The fleshy, sacklike hypochile is conical to nearly spherical with a long
claw at the base and a stripe of red-brown pubescence along the centerline. It
has a blunt, rounded apical end. The short, semitubular mesochile is about
twice the length of the hypochile with a distinct bend in the middle. The
mesochile is smooth, curved, and longitudinally grooved on the inside. The
deeply saccate epichile is 3-lobed at the apex and measures 1.0 x 1.2 x 1.4 in.
(2.6 x 3.0 x 3.6 cm). The stout column, which is abruptly curved at the apex
and about 1.2 in. (3 cm) long, has a pair of short, rounded, linear to sickle-
shaped fleshy glands at the base which exude liquid into the bucket. The
glands are 0.2 x 0.2 in. (0.5 x 0.5 cm). The stripe of hair along the midline of
the hypochile is found in only one other species, Coryanthes bergoldii from
Ecuador. Other known species have lateral hair stripes or none at all.
Coryanthes vasquezii has an intensely spicy but somewhat stuffy fragrance,
which is similar to that found in Coryanthes trifoliata and Coryanthes vieirae.
Despite the similar scent the 3 species are geographically separated from
each other. The main component of the fragrance of all 3 is Ipsdienol, a
pheromone that attracts the bark beetle Ips pini and its relatives....

...The flowers produce a fragrance reminiscent of orange peels or cinnamon....

Stanhopea tigrina Bateman ex Lindley

...Blossoms are extremely fragrant. Kennedy (1975) described the fragrance
as filling the greenhouse with the "mouth-watering fragrance of chocolate and
vanilla"....

Stanhopea wardii Loddiges ex Lindley

...The flowers, which live for 2-3 days and produce a very strong fragrance,
are about 5 in. (12 cm) across. They are pale to bright yellow or greenish
yellow, and the sepals are marked with fine violet-purple to brownish purple
dots that are sometimes clustered. The dorsal sepal is broadly ovate-elliptic,
rounded, slightly pointed at the apex, 1.9-2.5 in. (4.8-6.3 cm) long, and 1.0-1.4
in. (2.6-3.5 cm) wide. The ovate to oblong lateral sepals, which are marked
with orange and joined at the base for about 0.4 in. (1 cm), are usually
rounded at the apex, but some clones have pointed lateral sepals. Lateral
sepals are soft, nerved, and 1.8-2.4 in. (4.5-6.0 cm) long with recurved
margins. The elliptic-lanceolate petals, which may be abruptly or gradually
pointed, are softer, shorter, and recurve over the sepals. They have few
markings and wavy or ruffled margins. The bulbous, hollow hypochile, which
has no spots, is short and not bilobed, and bent at nearly a 90 angle. It is shiny
orange with a deep purple-brown eye on each side which may be visible on
the backside. On the inside, the hypochile has granular excrescences near the
base. The mesochile is inserted on the apex of the hypochile, is marked with a
few tiny specks starting at the base. It has two cream to light yellow-green
horns which are 1.2 in. (3 cm) long, pointed, and incurved. The pale yellow
epichile is angled to the apex of the mesochile, ovate, pointed, and concave
with somewhat reflexed margins. The very pale green column is 1.6-1.8 in.
(4.0-4.5 cm) long with a thick, curved central axis and wide, pale yellow
translucent wings which are speckled with many pink dots. Blossoms produce
a fragrance containing large amounts of 2-phenylethyl acetate and 2-
phenylethyl alcohol....
