yards and miles) and between units within the metric system.

Online In this activity, students will be learning how to estimate measurements and convert

have the introduction and instructions for this simulation. This is for the students to
use while completing their activity.

This activity asks that the students measure the growth of each tree for the given (on
the chart) amount of rainfall for a calendar year, this will show the students how
much a tree can grow with the given rainfall. The provided amount of rainfall varies
from 20 cm- 160 cm per year.

As the teacher, I will connect with my students via Google Hangouts reminding them
where they need to go, what tools they will need for the simulation, and that I am
available for any questions they may have. I will also send them the link that they
will need to access the simulations. Along with the required link, if students prefer, I
will also send a Google Doc out of the tables so that they can keep everything on the
computer. I will ask them to make a prediction as to how high and wide each of their
trees will grow. This is the time for a brief review of measurements and how to
estimate and convert.
1. Students should open whichever internet browser they prefer (Google
Pedagogy

Chrome, Fire Fox- (Internet Explorer is not recommended).

2. Students should copy and paste the provided link into the search bar and hit
enter.
3. In their tables, students will record the starting height of the trees.
4. To do so, they need to click on the ruler and drag it to each tree, keeping the
end of the ruler in line with the base of the tree trunk. Make sure to record
each tree data.
5. Students will also record the width of the tree trunk by selecting each tree,
and looking on the right hand side of the tree for the circle. Click Show
Larger View.
6. This will bring students to a new window with the visual of a cut tree and a
ruler. Students should click and drag the ruler so that 0 cm is in line with the
left edge of the tree trunk. Record this data. Click at the top left Return to
Forest and repeat for each tree.
7. Once back in the forest, students will locate on their sheet the first set
amount of rainfall and slide the slider on the blue line to that amount.
8. Then they will look to the top right and click Advance Year. They will then
record the height (growth) of each tree and the width of each tree for that
year/rainfall.
9. Students will repeat the measuring of trees for the given amount of rainfall
for 5 total years, making sure to record all data asked for.

In order to assess that students, understand measuring, I will ask them that for next
in class meet time to bring their charts and ask I the following questions:
1. Had the measurements been calculated in inches rather than centimeters,
would the numbers be higher or lower?
2. Which of your trees grew the highest? What was the height and width? How
does it compare to your smallest tree?
3. What do the varying amounts of rainfall show in relation to the growth of
the trees?
4. Convert the amount of rainfall each year from centimeters to feet.
5. Convert your tree heights from centimeters to meters.
6. Convert your tree widths from centimeters to yards.
7. Did your tree heights and widths meet your prediction? Why or why not?
Explain.
