Dear Francisco,
I'm glad to know you enjoyed the books I sent you for Christmas. Your letter of thanks
was wery well written and I congratulate you on being able to write so correctly.
You ask me for advice on reading. That's a very difficult request. I always hesitate to
advise my friends on what to read. How can I possibly know what will interest other people?
And you don't say in your letter wether you want to read fiction, or dram, or essays, or books
on travel.
What you do say is that you're very fond of reading, and I'm delighted by that. Do you
know the essays of Francis Bacon, who lived about the same time as Shakespeare? They're
full of good things about the reading. Here are some of them, from the essay 'Of Studies'.
'Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and
digested.
'Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; no to find talk
and discourse: but to weight and consider.

M bucur s aflu c v-au plcut crile pe care le-am trimis de Crciun. Scrisoarea
dumneavoastr de mulumire a fost foarte bine scris i v felicit pentru c pute i s scrie i
att de corect.
Dumneavoastr mi cerei un sfat cu privire la lectur. Este o solicitare foarte dificil.
ntotdeauna am ezitat, s ofer consultaii prietenilor mei, ce s citeasc. Cum a putea s tiu,
eventual, ce anume intereseaz pe ali oameni? i nici mcar nu ai menionat n scrisoarea
dumneavoastr dac preferai s citii: romane, piese de teatru, eseuri sau jurnale de
cltorie.
Ai mai menionat c suntei foarte pasionat de lectur, i eu sunt ncntat de aceasta.
Cunoatei eseurile lui Francis Bacon, care a trit n timpurile shakespeariene? Sunt pline de
lucruri bune despre lectur. Iat cteva dintre ele, din eseul ,,Despre Studii.
,,Unele cri sunt pentru a fi degustate, altele pentru a fi nghiite, ns puine din ele
sunt pentru a fi mestecate i digerate.

,,Citii nu ca s contrazicei i s combatei; i nici ca s credei sau s cde i de acord;

nu ca s gsii o conversaie sau un discurs: dar ca s gndii i s analizai.
