1. Discuss about beam strength of gear tooth---lewis equation.

2. Discuss about wear strength of gear strength for spur gear.
3. Describe the design procedure for spur gear.
4. It is required to design a pair of spur gears with 20 full-depth involutes teeth consisting
of a 20-teeth pinion meshing with a 50 teeth gear. The pinion shaft is connected with a
22.5kW, 1450 rpm electric motor. The starting torque of the motor can be taken as 150%
of the rated torque. The material of pinion is plain carbon steel Fe410 ( Sut 410 N / mm2
), while the gear is made of gray cast iron FG200 ( Sut 200 N / mm2 ). The factor of
safety is 1.5. Design the gears based on Lewis equation and using velocity factor to
account for the dynamic load.
5. A pair of helical gears consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth gear. The
pinion rotates at 720 rpm. The normal pressure angle is 20 , while the helix angle is 25 .
The face width is 40 mm and the normal module is 4 mm. Both the pinion and gear is
made of steel 40C8 ( S ut 600 N / mm2 ) and heat treated to a surface hardness of 300
BHN. The service factor and factor of safety are 1.5 and 2. Assume that the velocity
factor accounts for the dynamic load calculate the power transmitting capacity of gears.

1. Write a short note on gear drives giving their merits and demerits.
2. Explain the different causes of gear tooth failures and suggest possible remedies to avoid
such failures.
3. Write the expressions for static strength, limiting wear load and dynamic load for helical
gears and explain the various terms used therein.
4. A pair of straight bevel gears, mounted on shafts which are intersecting at right angles,
consisting of a 21 teeth pinion meshing with a 28 teeth gear. The pressure angle is 20 .
The pinion shaft connected to an electric motor developing 5 kW rated power at 1440
rpm. The service factor taken is 1.5. Both gears are made of case hardened steel (
S ut 750 N / mm 2 ) and heat treated to a surface hardness of 380 BHN. The limits of
errors are 10 m . The module and face width are 4 mm and 20 mm. Determine the factor
of safety against bending as well as against pitting failure.
5. A worm gear box with an effective surface area of 1.5 m2 is operating in still air with a
heat transfer coefficient of 15 W/m2oC. The temperature rise of lubricating oil above the
atmospheric temperature is limited to 50oC. The worm gear are designed as,
1/30/10/8
The worm shaft is rotating at 1440 rpm and the normal pressure angle is 20o. Calculate
the power transmitting capacity based on the thermal considerations.

bearing?
2. Advantages and disadvantages of rolling contact bearings over sliding contact bearings.
3. What are the main properties of sliding contact bearing materials?
4. A taper rolling bearing has a dynamic load capacity of 26kN. The desired life for 90% of
the bearing is 8000h and the speed is 300rpm. Calculate the equivalent radial load that the
bearing can carry
5. Select a single row deep groove ball bearing for a radial load of 4000 N and an axial load
of 5000 N, operating at a speed of 1600 r.p.m. for an average life of 5 years at 10 hours
per day. Assume uniform and steady load.
