A healthy body leads to a healthy mind and a healthy mind leads to
success in all spheres of life. Health cannot be bought by the rich and
famous. It is an intrinsic part of you that needs constant monitoring and
attention. If you have an unhealthy body you will continuously be
perturbed by the consequences and may not be able to concentrate on
the other aspects of your life. Great ideas and thoughts can only
emerge from a healthy mind and body.

In an environment that promotes ill health, we ingest harmful


chemicals, preservatives and pesticides through various sources. These
harmful elements come into our system through the air, the water and
the food that we intake. And our body is constantly undergoing a war
that we know nothing about. At times our bodies are not prepared to
handle such toxins and our systems become weaker by the day slowly
but surely. And over time these toxins cause long-term health
problems. The complications associated with the body are increasing
everyday and through mutations the bacteria and viruses are becoming
immune to the strong antibiotics that the doctors resort to.

Even as the complications increase the cost of health care is touching


the roof. With new and specialized health issues the scientists keep
developing various cures for infections, viruses and diseases. This in
turn makes the cures extremely expensive and specialized treatments
are not easily accessible to all.

These are the reasons why today the general awareness of health
related issues is increasing rampantly. People are realizing that if they

do not take preventive measures they will end up with a large hole in
their pockets. More importantly, everyone is waking to the fact that a
healthy body helps in experiencing the pleasures of the world and in
achieving the goals that one desires. If you think for a moment, you will
also come to the same conclusion that only if you are healthy, energetic
and rejuvenated can you work industriously towards meeting your
goals. Can you work nights burning the midnight oil when you have a
headache? Can you go on a vacation and enjoy the beach when you
have an upset stomach? Obviously the answer is no!

Due to this increase in awareness on the health front, many people


have come forth with their opinions and ideas about what good health
comprises of and what individuals should do to cure certain problems.
There are theories and theories abound about the various methods that
need to be undertaken. While some talk about naturopathy others extol
the virtues of a low-carb diet. Some mention the benefits of eating
vegetarian food and some extol virtues of a high protein diet replete
with poultry, meat and seafood. How then can you decide the right kind
of health regime that you should follow?

The first thing that you should do is to understand the reason why the
body becomes unhealthy. This will help you identify the cause and help
eliminate it from the roots rather than treating just the symptoms that
can and probably will resurface. Louis Pasteurs dying words were The

appreciation of the body can explain a large number of health problems
that we go through.

It is important, therefore, to understand the body. The body is made up


of 70% water and there are other minerals, compounds, tissues, and
muscles etc that make up the rest of the body. All these put together
have an acid alkaline ratio. This is not the general acidity that we talk
about with respect to the stomach. It refers to the overall ratio of all
the body fluids and tissues. A measure of acidity or alkalinity, pH
(potential of hydrogen) is one of the best ways to determine the level
that you are at. pH can range from 0 to 14 and a pH of 7 indicates
neutral. A lower pH indicates acidity and a higher pH indicates alkalinity.
For a normal healthy body you need to have a pH between 6 and 7.5.

Many doctors, herbalists, nutritionists and naturopaths are beginning to


accept the crucial role that the pH level has to play in our health. There
is a need to maintain the acid-alkali ratio in our body because if the
balance is not preserved it can cause various health related problems. A
high acid level in the body weakens the system. An acid level even
slightly higher than the natural levels can cause many health problems.
Below are some of the diseases or complications that a little bit of extra
acid can cause.
- Causes autotoxification or self poisoning
- Constriction of blood vessels and lack of oxygen
- Unnatural gain in weight resulting in obesity or diabetes
- Problems related to the urinary bladder and kidney, including

Surprising, isnt it, that a little bit of imbalance can cause so many and
such grave problems and diseases? But it is true! This is how it
happens.

The body is tuned to maintain equilibrium with respect to acidity. When


the body becomes more acidic it is forced to extract alkaline minerals
like calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium. These minerals are
generally stored in vital organs and bones. This depletes the amount of
minerals that the vital organs have, making them weak and susceptible
to long-term damage.
High acidity levels or acidosis not only affects the life sustaining organs
but also impedes their recovery. This is because an improper pH
balance hinders the process of assimilation of minerals and nutrients. A
nutritional or diet program can fall flat due to this and you may never
know why it happened. Instead, you may blame the nutrition program
for not being effective without realizing that the culprit was your own
acid-alkali imbalance.

The reason why this happens is because during acidosis, calcium, which
is the human glue and bonds various other molecules along with water,
is depleted and the human system therefore does not absorb the
nutrients adequately. This means that high acidity will not only damage

vital organs and bones but if undetected (which is normally what


happens since the effects of acidity are not perceived immediately) will
hinder self-repair of the system.

Acid is normally stored in fat cells and if excess acid comes in contact
with an organ it can start eating into the organ. The intelligent human
body tries to prevent this by creating more adipose tissue and keeping
the acid away from the vital organs. And thus in a manner of speaking
by having an acidic body, we promote obesity. Often we have heard of
people complain that they keep on increasing weight even when they
have a reduced intake. Now you have one of the answers to the reason
behind this mystery! Irrespective of the intake, if the body is
industriously making more adipose tissue to save your vital organs, you
are bound to put on weight.

Osteoporosis is also a condition, which is exaggerated by high acid


levels. The body tries to save the vital organs by stealing calcium, an
alkali, to negate the high acid levels. Depletion of calcium from the
bones makes them weak and susceptible to fractures, pains and aches.

Acidosis also reduces the availability of oxygen and calcium thus


promoting the growth of fungus, bacteria and viruses. Due to these
innumerable negative effects of acidity, the body can accumulate toxic

self-poisoning. Modern day food, medicines and environment allows for
many modes of increasing the amount of toxic wastes in the body.
Once the bowel becomes toxic the rest of the body soon follows. The

quacks alike. What is essential to understand is that irrespective of the
cause of toxicity, the cure for it needs to be designed ensuring
incorporation of the pH balance of the body and unless the acid alkaline
balance is attended to, the detox program will most likely fail. This is
because in an acidic environment micro-organisms like yeast and
Candida multiply. These yeasts ferment the glucose in our body,
depriving us of the nutrition, which we require. Additionally, these
yeasts also excrete toxic wastes, which cause further acidity, forming a

alkaline. If your diet is more acidic in nature, chances are that your
body is acidic. The standard American diet consists mainly of animal
products like meat, poultry, seafood, eggs and dairy products that are
all highly acid producing in nature. Our daily meals include a high

proportion of processed foods like coffee, soft drinks, white flour to


name a few. We try and balance our sugar intake by choosing artificial
sweeteners over sugar. All these combine to form a potent combination

levels. We negate the importance of vegetables, fresh fruits and herbs,
all of which are foods that help in reducing acid levels in the body since
they are alkali-producing foods.

Appalling, you might say but all this is true and based on facts.
However, there is no need to be alarmed and horror-stricken because
the solution to these problems is extremely easy. With awareness,
regular monitoring, proper diet and supplements you can ensure that

Here are some ways in which you can do it.

1. MONITOR YOUR pH LEVELS


The first step towards a rejuvenated you, is to monitor your acidity
levels. This can be done easily and in the privacy of your home by using
an easy-to-use pH strip. This strip allows you to test the pH levels of
your urine and saliva indicating what the levels are. A normal urine pH
level should lie between 6.0 and 6.5 in the morning and 6.5 and 7.0 in
the evening. pH levels for saliva should remain between 6.5 and 7.5 at
all times of the day. Urine testing indicates the efficiency of your self-
detoxification mechanism and the level at which you assimilate
minerals. Saliva pH indicates the activity levels of the digestive
enzymes. If the pH reading from urine and saliva is acidic in nature, the

2. DO NOT IGNORE THE SEEMINGLY INSIGNIFICANT SIGNALS


THEY MEAN MUCH MORE!
Another way of keeping a tab on what your body is going through is to
pay attention to the small signals that it continuously gives you. Dont
ignore your body till it cries in protest and you fall sick. Being aware
and sensitive to the subtle signals that the body gives out is difficult
when you are being pelted with thousands of signals that persuade to
suppress the symptoms that are actually trying to give us a sneak
preview of the impending dangers. We tend to fall prey to these
persuasive advertisements and rather than listening to our body, silence
it by taking drugs that provide symptomatic relief. Keeping a tab on
certain aspects of the body functions can go a long way in saving you
from emotional, physical and financial stress.

One of the first warning signals is the calcium deposit that you can
often see on the nails or skin. These are generally calcium that has
been removed from the body parts, like the bones, to be used for

are no health problems that are specific to one area. The body is

And many more! These symptoms that I have lined up are just a few of
the many that your body might be giving you. Wake up and listen to

3. EAT AN ACID-ALKALI BALANCED DIET


Maintaining a balance in the acid levels in our body is of utmost
importance. The food that we eat dictates to a large extent how acidic
or alkaline our bodies will be. When food gets digested, it leaves a
residual substance in the system. This residual substance, sometimes

called ash can be neutral, acidic or alkaline in nature. This depends on


the kind of food that we eat. When there is high intake of acid
producing foods the condition of acidosis occurs.
It becomes extremely important to balance the acid alkali level in our
body. When your body is in an acidic state, the ideal diet should contain
20% acid producing foods to 80% alkali producing foods. This ratio of
acid alkali producing foods along with an alkalizing supplement (more
on this later), should be maintained in your overall diet until your body
reaches the ideal pH level mentioned earlier. Once desired levels of pH
are reached, a diet containing 35% acid producing foods and 65% alkali
producing foods is ideal for maintaining the correct body pH. This ideal
ratio helps in fighting disease and preventing it too by assisting the
body in reducing and maintaining acidity. Large alkali reserves are
maintained by a healthy body to beckon at times of stress and high
acidity. But these reserves can be depleted and a ratio that is more
acidic than the ideal can be hazardous. The diet that we choose should
also reflect this ideal ratio.

Since Calcium is a key mineral that regulates the pH of the body, it is


important that we limit our intake of phosphates that bind to calcium and
prevent its absorption. So ensure that you cut out all carbonated drinks and
reduce the intake of animal protein. Do not cut meats from your diet, as the
body needs the nutrients that they contain. It is important, therefore to

4. SUPPLEMENTS
Sometime, it is possible that in spite of maintaining a good healthy diet, our
bodies may not be getting the right amount of nutrients. This happens
because due to our faulty agricultural practices, the soils have been depleted
of their nutrients and hence our vegetarian diets do not have adequate
nutrients. So even if you plan an alkaline diet to neutralize your acidity levels,
your planning may go astray since the vegetables that you add in your diet
may not have the required amount of alkali producing capabilities.

This is when nutritional supplements will go a long way in helping you achieve
the objective of maintaining the acid-alkali balance. However, it is important
that you chose the right supplement. A supplement that actually works!
