Goals and Next Steps for Increasing Intercultural Competence

Intercultural competence is the key to successful intercultural communication for

lawers who want to deal with international cases or cases related to foreigners. In
order to increase our intercultural competence, we should have intercultural attitudes,
keeping curious and open to other cultures and being ready to suspend disbelief about
on other cultures.In addition, we should master intercultural knowledge, knowledge of
social processes as well as knowledge of how social groups function and realize other
people have multiple identities. Whats more, we should try to learn intercultural
skills.We should have the ability to compare two or more cultures and ability to
interpret the culture perceived as well as the ability to relate ones own cultural
experiences.Forth, We should have critical cultural awareness.We should
acknowledge respect for human dignity and recognize the human right as well as
become aware of ones own values and how these influence ones views of other
peoples values.
The goal of us is to develop intercultural skills, attitudes and awareness of values
just as much as to develop knowledge of a particular culture or of different cultures
within ones own country. However, the task for the us is not to learn cultural content
word by word, but to interact with some part of another society and its cultures, with
the purpose of relativising our understanding of our own cultural values and
behaviors, and investigate for ourselves the otherness around us, either in their
immediate physical environment or in their engagement with otherness which
internationalization and globalization have brought into their world.
