Question Seven: looking back at

you preliminary task, what do

you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full
product?
What have you learnt and how have you
progressed?
In the preliminary task, I have found that we used a variety of shots to
help establish setting and characters as well as create an atmosphere.
The build up of discovering identity in the preliminary task was
something that was executed successfully with the use of wide shots
and close-ups. The hidden identity theme is a recurring element that
has been included in both the preliminary and Anonymous Lead.

As seen in these shots, the

overgrown, abandoned and
secluded surrounding sets the
scene and can imply secrecy
and mystery in the
atmosphere.
In terms of editing, the preliminary
task lacked in quality of flow and
smoothness with the clip. In contrast
to Anonymous Lead, editing was
critical, and was need to compliment
what was being cross-cut between.
Also, the Thriller retained motifs and
symbols compared to the preliminary
task; this is because we needed to
establish each characters
personalities within a matter of two
minutes.
Match-on-action has been
applied here to create an
smooth transition between
his actions.
Lighting for the preliminary task was
difficult, this is because we were
dependent on the natural light outside, Lighting here is
uneven and affects
which ultimately created an inconsistent the quality of the
balance between each shot throughout film.
the film. However, the Thriller made use
of controlled lighting to create the effect
of chiaroscuro. It was easier to film
indoors for that reason but adjusting and
altering positions for the light to be shot
was required for the balanced, shadow-
bound shots to create the tense
ambience. These two shots
from Anonymous
Lead contain the
dark and concealing
yet balanced
contrast between
the darkness and the
limited light around
in the setting.
Sound was an issue throughout many of the shots in the preliminary
task when filming. Due to winds and weather change on the day of
filming, it ruined the overall quality of the film, making the film seen
amateur and poorly recorded. Despite struggles in previous experience,
sound was a controlled element for the Thriller; diegetic sound, like
dialogue, was recorded inside, to prevent sound quality from reducing.
Non-diegetic sound, like sound effects, however were found from
YouTube.
What have you learnt about the general
components of this project?
Working to a specific brief limited yet somewhat broadened our ideas
for the narrative. Limited yet broadened in the sense that initial
thoughts have accommodated and adapted to various changes applied
to the overall product. Deadlines have been one of the main issues
drawing back the whole process of our film because members in our
group have proven to be reluctant to co-operate in situations of dire
need; e.g. produce more shots. Overall, this project has allowed me to
develop my skills for production and editing purposes, as well as gain a
deeper interest of what was just an A-Level project.
