Brentwood Star News receives TEPF grant
cole Brentwood Elementary School received a $500 grant from The Educational Partnership Founda-
tion (TEPF) to support the sustainability of the Brentwood Star News newspaper. The grant is geared
towards supporting student-led citizenship initiatives happening in schools and communities across
Alberta. It will allow the school to purchase cameras for the newspaper and to invite workshop facilita-

Fule for Thought
Recently, I was reading about some break-
throughs in Health and Wellness. I watched a re-
port on CBC (cant believe I watch that for any-
thing but hockey!) and it talked of how maple
syrup may be an answer to antibiotic resistant
bacteria. It seems that when you separate all the
sugar and fluid, and get down to just the pure ma-
ple, it can help antibiotics destroy bacteria, even
if its resistant to that same medicine! Then, Ive
also been reading that walnuts are very good for
a persons cardiovascular system. Both of these
findings have given me a real boost. You see,
my favourite ice cream, is Maple Walnut! So
I figure that I can really give my body a fighting
chance on two fronts, just by eating ice cream! I
think its a win-win-win.
Cravings will be met, Im safe if I get a horrible
flesh eating strain of bacteria, and my heart will
love me too! Ah, the wonders of Modern Medi-
cine!
Speaking of things cold, I havent written about
the sport of curling in a long time! I figure its
safer now, because the ice is out, I may not run
into angry people with brooms, and the election
isnt until October! People will forget by then
wont they? Ah, curling Shuffleboards bigger
cousin from the Wintery North! I was watching
a documentary on Canada, and one of the hosts
described curling as being just like our country
cold, polite, and boring! I dont think youre bor-
ing, curling. I actually like you maybe not a lot,
but kind of like a cousin you visit, but you need
short doses of him! I did watch some curling this
winter, and one night I got a real dose of it. You
see, its not just the game you watch through the
ice, but they have cameras on the ceiling so you
can look up and watch a house on the TV screen.
Then, they also had a curling game being telecast
on TV! Everywhere I looked, there was curling
it felt like an intervention!

I were having wings with some pals who are avid

curlers really do remember, or are they just mak-
ing up stuff? I mean, is anyone going to call them
on it? I know Im not! So, James and I were figur-
ing that body contact would bring a certain level
of excitement missing from curling. Suppose, as
youre delivering the rock, you were fair game?
Now, that would change peoples slides! If they
knew some big bruiser could take them out on a
slide, wouldnt that add a bit of a wow factor?
James also felt that if you had to slide out and
around pylons, before you released the rock,
that would kick up the skill level a lot! Or
if things were thrown at you during the deliv-
ery, like dodgeball on ice! Again, this might re-
ally bring some drama and action to the sport!
Actually, if youre ever bored (not just of curling),
you can find a video on YouTube of CAT Curling!
They have video shopped cats lying down, on
the rocks, so it looks like the ladies are sending
live cats down the ice to do draws and take outs!
Thats right, you can hear the cat purring, as it
slides down the ice and into the house to hit and
roll! This could definitely revolutionize the sport,
and people could also have quality time with
their pets! However, I think this would be cruelty
to animals not because the cats could get hurt,
but the fact that theyre being made to curl! Now
thats cruelty!

Geeraert added that Alber-
ta grows the best barley in
the world, so it seemed natu-
ral to them to use their local
product to create the best lo-
cal beer.
The three-vessel systems in
the malt house are all fully
automated and can start and
finish an entire batch of malt.
That will allow them to run
three different batches at the
same time. The malting pro-
cess will take approximately
seven days.
From there the malt can
be shipped to other brewer-
ies or used in the in-house
brewery in the five-brew-bar-
rel brew house (5BBL) that
has four 5BBL fermenters
and two 5BBL bright tanks.
At full production, the malt
house will be able to pro-
duce 15 metric tons of malt

to produce around 57,000 litres of beer
a year.
There is nothing like this in Strath-
more or Chestermere or anywhere
around here. That is why the tap house
seemed so enticing to us. We can edu-
cate people on why craft beer is bet-
ter than macro beer (big name beer).
We want to bring in something differ-
ent and give people the education as to
why micro beer is better and what all is
out there and why it is different, said
Michaluk.
The onsite tap house will have 50
seats and 12 taps for different types of
craft beer. Although Origin Malting will
not be selling cans or bottles of beer,
people will be able to go to the tap
house with their families, sit down to
enjoy the beer, eat a few snacks and
watch the hockey game. It will not be a
bar or club scene it will allow people
to enjoy good beer and good company.
Origin Malting will be offering beer
as pints or flights (four different four
ounce beers) to drink in the tap house.
They will also have growlers available
for people to fill up with their favourite
beer and take home.
Origin Malting will have several spe-
cial house beers that will constantly oc-
cupy several taps, and the rest of their
taps will be filled with proven beer
recipes from other Alberta breweries.
Those taps will always be changing as
new beer is brewed in the Strathmore
brewery.
In September, they will be offering
tours of the malt house and brewery.
For those interested in seeing where
the malt barley or hops come from,
tours of the farms will also be made
available.
In the beer community, people love
doing tours and driving out to have a
beer. We have a lot of people calling
asking to come try a beer. We will have
tours, and it will bring more people to
Strathmore, said Geereart, who added
that they are passionate about craft
beer and about educating people.

bombed bikes are available to rent
from Hope Bridges at the Leary
Centre. The bikes can be rented
to ride around Strathmore for just
$2 for an hour-long ride upon the
unique works of art. The bikes were
inspired from similar bikes that line
the streets in Norway. For the past
several months, they have been a
community project at Hope Bridges
where community members knit-
ted, crocheted and weaved yarn
along the frames, made signs and

The Strathmore Lions Club hosted their annual Ladies and Gentlemen Auc-
tion on April 8 at the Strathmore Civic Centre. The club raised approximately
$40,000, which will be reinvested back into the community.

raised about $40,000 at their
31st annual Strathmore Lions
Club Ladies and Gentlemen
Auction April 8.
About 325 people jammed
the Strathmore Civic Centre
to bid on live and silent auc-
tion items. Proceeds from the
event will be used to fund
ongoing club activities and
projects, and to be given out
as donations throughout the
coming year.
We have a number of proj-
ects on the go right now, said
Greg Helfrich, Strathmore Li-
ons Club member and chair
of the auction committee.
The funds go to ongoing
club activities and projects
and for ongoing support of
the community.
Two big-ticket items in-
cluded in this years event
garnered a lot of interest.
Auctioned off during the live
auction portion was two tick-
ets from WestJet to anywhere
they fly. The other item was
a large, framed portrait of
Justin Bieber which the win-
ning bidder could chose to
hang in any Strathmore busi-
ness for a week. The portrait
was bought by Neil Kennedy
from Sobeys, and he chose
to hang the portrait in Origi-
nal Joes for a week.
Proceeds from Lions auc-
tion are used to support oth-
er organizations such as the
Strathmore Handi-bus Asso-
ciation and the Strathmore
Librarys summer programs.
Money raised also goes
towards supporting youth
exchanges, such as the
Crowther Memorial Junior
High Schools (CMJHS) east-
ern Canada trip. The Lions
fund one student to go on
in Strathmore

grades to the Lions Park
south of Grande Pointe Es-
tates in Strathmore. The park
is being upgraded as part of
the national Lions 100-year
anniversary happening in
2017. Upgrades to the park
will take place over the next
several years, and include a
paved pathway being poured
this spring that will connect
to existing pathway systems;
adding three picnic tables
and several benches; plant-
ing trees; adding signage;
and creating a memorial for-
est for Strathmore residents
to plant a tree in memory of
a loved one who has died.
Every year the Strathmore
Lions put approximately
$100,000 back into the com-
munity through various proj-
ects and donations. Their
goal for community better-
ment is emphasized by their
motto, We Serve.
This is an annual event
that we look forward to ev-
ery year. Its one of our big-
gest fundraisers so we put a
lot into it and a lot of people
came forward to make it a
success, said Robert Bre-
itwieser, Strathmore Lions
Club member and chair of
the parks committee.
The morning after this
years auction, the Strath-
more Lions Club auction
committee was already plan-
ning for the 2018 version of
the event.
This event is not possible
without the support of the
local community, said Hel-
frich. Weve got ideas to
make it more fun, with more
variety and even more enjoy-
able for everyone next year.

A new outdoor classroom is being
built at the school that will allow stu-
dents to learn in a new and unique way.
The classroom will be partially built
by June and will be completely open for
classes when the school resumes this
fall.
The unique outdoor classroom will
include a cedar pergola, seating for 30
students, log benches, several different
work stations, and science equipment
such as a thermometer, a rain gauge, a
weather vane and pocket microscopes.
Last year we created a school and
community outdoor garden. That took
off really well and we were able to create
three cedar garden boxes, said Claire
Wade, health and wellness coordina-
tor with Carseland School. From there,
we started a new plan for project-based
learning for an outdoor classroom.
Wade added that the outdoor class-
room will be a hub for nature-based
education and outside instruction.
All Carseland School students will
have access to the outdoor classroom
for their studies.
They will be doing a lot of science
classes outside, language arts, novel
studies and poetry, evidence and inves-
tigation, exploration, inquiry and learn-
ing about the plants, said Wade.
The outdoor classroom is an exten-
sion of the garden project that was
started last year, in which students and
community members used the raised
gardens to grow herbs and vegetables.
The Grade 6 class also created an
inside tower garden where they grow
mint and greens such as arugula all
year round. The class had such an abun-
dance of mint last year that they picked
it, dried it, and packaged it as mint tea
to give away. They created their own
company, the Green Thumbs, and they

fancy beans and wieners with peppero-
ni, midnight cookies, and a fancy apple
cider with lemon rind and maple syrup.
They are not allowed to do any
preparation beforehand, it all has to be
done there. The cookies are going to
be challenging to cook on a stove, said
Scouter Nathalie Hilton OBrien, who is
in the process of becoming inducted to
guide the Scouts in their outdoors ad-
ventures.
At the camp, there will also be all
sorts of fun activities for the scouts to
do that the Rovers will be organizing.

After capturing the organizations first
provincial title in 25 years, the Wheat-
land Athletic Association hockey teams
wrapped up their banner year with
their annual awards ceremony April 7
at the Strathmore Civic Centre.
The midget Chiefs were still riding a
high following their 8-4 victory against
the St. Albert Crusaders and got to cel-
ebrate with the other teams in the or-
ganization.
It was really cool to see the kids in-
teract with players from the different
levels, said Chiefs assistant coach Matt
Gass. Some of the kids who played
midget this year played for the same
coaches in bantam and peewee, so it
was nice to see them get recognized for
sticking with the program and get cel-
ebrated.
The night was structured around
handing out individual hardware, high-
lighting players who were key in the
teams success.
The Chiefs oozed with talent this sea-
son. They were the class of the South
Central Alberta Hockey League, owning
the league leader board in scoring and
goaltending.
Two players who werent atop the
league statistical standings were cap-
tain Ryan Bell and Scott Desserre. They
split the Most Valuable and Exemplary
Player award.
We had a lot of talented kids this
year, said Gass. Our goaltending and
goal scoring were amazing, but Ryan
and Desserre were the two guys who
held the locker room together, they
never stopped working and were very
strong leaders.
Forward Isaac Benoit was named Top
Forward and Top Scorer. Benoit led the
regular season scoring race with 38
goals and 26 assists, and provincials
with two goals and six assists.
Chayse Hnatowich captured the Most
Sportsmanlike award. He finished third
in league scoring with 55 points and
only received 14 penalty minutes in 36
games.
Wacy Sandum and Ryan McHarg were
the two recipients of the Kyle Ruppe
Scholarship. Ruppe played hockey for
the association. He was diagnosed with
ALS and passed away two years ago.
Each year, players are selected to re-
ceive $1,500 scholarships in honour of
Ruppe, for their continued education
down the road.
Ty Tarvyd was spectacular in net for
the Chiefs. He never lost a single game
and posted a 1.40 goals against aver-
age and a .940 save percentage. He was
named Rookie of the Year.
Zach Suntjens picked up the Top De-
fenseman award and Ty Skehar was
named Most Improved.
The bantam Warriors showed signs
of promise at points throughout the
season, but struggled stringing those
strong games together.
Their captain, Kage Yellowfly, was
the big winner of the night. He led the
Warriors with 24 goals and 15 assists
in 34 games, as he was named Most
Valuable Player and Top Scorer. He
also received the Craig Kletzel Memo-
rial award, a scholarship fund set up for
players who portray leadership quali-
ties on the team.
Hes been very impressive all along.
Ive had him now for two years and
his development has been amazing,
said Warriors head coach Cody Brown.
He always makes the right decisions
on the ice and if he keeps the right
mindset moving forward, the sky is the
limit for him.
Most Sportsmanlike award went
to Kegan Law, who finished with 11
points and 20 penalty minutes.
Adam Kirkpatrick finished second
on the team in scoring with 14 goals
and 34 points, and he was named Top
Rookie; and Mitch Tessemaker was
named Top Defenseman with five goals
and 13 assists.
The Most Improved award was split
between Zach Nicholls and Chase
Tweit. Nicholls sniped six goals and
recorded five assists, while Tweit fin-
ished with three assists.
The Most Improved award was
a tough decision this year. We had a
lot of guys get better, but ultimately,
we went with Zach and Chase, said
Brown. It was hard to compare their
games, but they both came to learn
and worked hard all year long. They
really expanded each of their games,
brought an attitude to learn and kept
asking questions, getting better in the
process.
Its hard to imagine where the pee-
wee Braves would be if it wasnt for
defenseman Cyle Clayton.
Ive been coaching on and off since
1976, and never have I had a player
voted unanimously to be the cap-
tain until this year with Clayton, said
Braves head coach Keith Klemmensen.
Hes as good of a hockey player that
weve ever had in peewee. He is one
of our hardest workers, and his team-
mates like and respect him so much.
Clayton racked up the Best Defen-
seman, Most Valuable Player, Hardest
Working Player and the Kletzel Memo-
rial award. He finished with eight goals
and 19 assists in 33 games.
Tyler Fairbairn tied for third on the
Braves with 15 goals and was named
Rookie of the Year. Phillip Raycroft fin-
ished third in the team in scoring with
18 goals and 12 assists and was named
Most Sportsmanlike. Nolan Bells four
goals and nine assists earned him the
Most Improved award, and Nolan Ma-
hussier won the Top Scorer, leading
the team with 16 goals and 16 assists.

Bear Chief was 16 years old when he attend-
ed the camp on the Tsuu Tina reserve 21 years
ago, when McCarthy was playing for the Calgary
Flames.
I dont remember him specifically, but I re-
member how enthusiastic and receptive the kids
were at the camp, said McCarthy, who spent five
seasons with the Flames.
A simple Facebook message got the ball rolling
for the camp.
My New Years resolution was to follow up on
one of my goals after the local elections we had
recently, said Bear Chief. A lot of times, people
will propose new ideas for the community, but
never follow through on them.
The two sides began coordinating the event
back in January, when McCarthy was in New
Brunswick, serving as an assistant coach for the
Woodstock Slammers, a Junior A team, playing in
the Maritime Junior Hockey League.
Once my career ended, I stepped away from
the game, said McCarthy. It wasnt until about
six years ago I got back into coaching and really
enjoyed it. Terrences idea sounded great to me
and it provided me a chance to visit my daughter
and brother who are living in Calgary these days.
McCarthy suited up in 736 games over 11 sea-
sons, playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Phila-
delphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, New York
Rangers, Boston Bruins and Flames. He registered
72 goals, 76 assists and racked up 1,534 penalty
minutes.

On the ice, the rink was divided into three
groups, with a stage for power skating, shoot-
ing and stickhandling. Off the ice, the kids were
put through drills centered on developing agility,
overall skills and dryland training.
The dryland drills are the most important
ones, said McCarthy. If you want to be a good
stick handler or skater, you have to put in the
work off the ice and get in shape.
Assisting McCarthy were six volunteers from
Siksika Nation who have returned from junior or
university level hockey.
The camps went great. The kids had a great
time, and the parents were happy and thankful
that we were able to bring him out here, said
Bear Chief.
Plans for the next camp have already begun with
McCarthy and Bear Chief. With McCarthy booked
in the winter months with the Slammers, the camp
would return to the reserve next summer, so long
as there is available ice time.

Former Bisons continue success elsewhere

For the second-straight year, the Foot-
hills CFR Chemicals Bisons finished as
the finalist in the Alberta Midget Hock-
ey League.
With several of this years Bisons al-
ready preparing for promising Junior
careers next season, its time to take one
final look back on last seasons Bisons
and how their seasons wrapped up.
Goaltender Ryan Simpson was one
part of a formidable duo in net for the
Cochrane Generals of the Heritage Ju-
nior Hockey League. Starting the sea-
son 11-0, Simpson finished 16-2 with
three shutouts and a 2.47 goals against
average, with a .916 save percentage.
He was named goaltender of the month
in October. His Generals lost the HJHL
league final to the Red Deer Vipers,
but still advanced to provincials, where
they lost in the provincial final to the
Wainwright Bisons, one goal shy of the
Keystone Cup. Simpson made 40 saves
in the provincial finale.
With the Bisons, he split the du-
ties in net with Hunter Virostek, who
appeared in 44 games in net for the
Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Ju-
nior Hockey League, ending up with a
16-22-2 record with a 3.99 goals against
average and a .877 save percentage.
Virostek helped carry the Dragons to a
Game 5 in the opening round of the
South playoffs, but was slighted by the
Calgary Canucks.
Much of last years graduating class
found themselves in the AJHL, where
many of them appeared on playoff
teams.
In 46 regular season games for the
Whitecourt Wolverines, Tanner Foster
registered three goals and 18 points,
along with a pair of goals and assists in
11 playoff games. He has played in 16
playoff games with the Wolverines, who
vision title, knocking off the top-ranked
Fort McMurray Oil Barons and former
Bison Liam Izyk in six games. So far, he
has a pair of goals and five assists. The
Wolverines will meet the Brooks Ban-
dits in the Gas Drive Cup final, which
begins April 14.
Izyk netted seven markers and racked
up 20 assists in his first full season with
the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. He has
a goal and three assists in 11 playoff
games.
On the South side, last seasons cap-
tain Kyle Gordon sniped six goals and
20 assists for the Oilers this season.
In 12 playoff games, he has turned in
three assists. The Oilers reached the Vi-
terra South Division finals against the
top-seeded Brooks Bandits, losing in
five games.
Defenseman Zach Vinnell appeared
in one game with the Bandits before
hopping over to play with the Camrose
Kodiaks for 52 games, registering three
goals and 24 points.
