C) Target strength and proportioning

Target Mean Strength , f TMS = f ck + k.s

( From table-I of IS: 10262-2009 , Standard Deviation , s = 4+1 = 5)
f TMS = 25 + 1.65 x 5 = 33.25 N/ mm2

1
D) Selection of Water-Cement Ratio

From Table : 5 of IS : 456-2000 , For Moderate Exposure maximum water cement ratio = 0.50
Provide Water Cement Ratio= 0.45 < 0.50 , Hence , O.K

E) Selection of Water Content

From Table : 2 of IS: 10262-2009 , Maximum Water Content = 186 litres ( For 25-50 mm slump range and for 20
mm nominal max aggregate size)
For Slump 75 mm , Water Required = 186 + 186x3/100 = 191.58 litres

Cement Content = 191.58 / 0.45 = 425.73 Kg/ m3 , say 426 Kg > 350 Kg / m3

F) Proportioning of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate content

From Table -3 , Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm aggregate size and fine aggregate of Zone-
II & for water-cement ration 0.50 = 0.62
For decreasing Water-Cement Ratio 0.05 , Volume of Coarse Aggregate increased 1% = 0.01
Hence , Volume of Coarse aggregate = 0.62+0.01 = 0.63

G) Mix Calculations

The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows :

a) Volume of Concrete : 1.0 m3 ( Entrapped air-Nil)
b) Volume of Cement = 426 / (2.98 x 1000 ) = 0.1429 m3
c) Volume of water = 0.1916 m3
d) Volume of C.A & F.A = 1- (0.1352+0.1916) = 0.6732 m3
e) Volume of C.A = 0.6732 x 0.63 =0.4241 m3
f) Volume of F.A = 0.6732x 0.37 = 0.2491 m3

Weight of different aggregate , cement and water in per m3 volume of concrete are as follows :

a) Weight of Cement = 426 Kg

b) Weight of water = 191.60 Kg
c) Weight of C.A = 0.4241 x 2.85 x 1000 = 1209 Kg
d) Weight of F.A = 0.2491 x 2.59 x 1000 = 645 Kg

G) Mix Proportion ( In Kg)

Cement Water W/C C.A F.A

426 191.6 0.45 1209 645
1 - 2.83 1.51

This proportion now consider as trial mix -1

From Durability Consideration as per Table-5 of IS: 456-2000 maximum W/C = 0.50 and minimum Cement
content = 350 kg/cu. M of concrete.

Now considering Slump 75 mm , observing the trial mix test result ,

W/C (Considered) = 0.45

(I) Final Mix

Hence, the proportion of different aggregates , water and cement selected from trial mix for M-25 design mix
concrete are as follows :

Cement (Kg) Water W/C C.A (Kg) F.A (Kg)

( Litres) Fraction I = 60%
Fraction II = 40 %
426 191.6 0.45 725 + 484 = 1209 645
1 - 2.83 1.51
50 22.50 85 + 57 = 142 76

4
Actual quantities required for the mix per bag of cement
(i) Water absorption of C.A = 0.8 % , Hence Water added = 142 x 0.8 % = 1.14 litre

Now , For 50 g of Cement :

(i) Water = 22.50 + 1.14 = 23.64 litres , Say 24.00 litres

\
(ii) Coarse Aggregate :
Fraction-I (20 mm ) =85+ 1.14 x0.60 = 85.70 Kg
Fraction-II (10 mm) =57+1.14 x 0.40 = 57.50 Kg
Total = 143.20 kg

(iii) Fine Aggregate : 76 Kg ( Free surface moisture at site should be considered)

Cement (Kg) Water C.A (Kg) F.A (Kg)

( Litres) Fraction I = 60%
Fraction II = 40 %
50 24 143.20 76
1 2.86 1.52

Final Mix Proportion for M-25 Grade Concrete = 1 : 1.52 : 2.86
