Unit on Community will be taught in a Head Start Classroom. Children are between
the ages of three and five years old. Although there are children who have been
identified as Special Needs and have an IEP in place, there is no need for specific
adaptations in the classroom to teach the lessons of this unit.
Who (if anybody) will assist with the presentation of this lesson, and what will their role be?

Teacher Assistant will participate with Teacher in this Unit Study by:
Help with classroom setup
Help children stay focused and remain on tasks throughout activities
Help with physical needs of children

Students will need to be acclimated to the classroom, and able to follow simple
directions. Many of the activities will be first time for these children Community Unit
would be taught at the beginning of the school year.

When within the stages of learning will this lesson be presented? (Is it a learning acquisition lesson, learning fluency lesson, learning

maintenance lesson, or learning generalization lesson?)

The stage of learning in this Unit Study is Learning Acquisition.

When will this lesson be completed? (Will it be a one-day lesson or a multiple day lesson?)

Lesson will be taught over a three week period.

Week 2: The Farm Community
Week 3: Community Helpers

Where: Unit Lessons will take place in the classroom.


What: Materials needed for Unit Study include Visuals, Books from library on
Community, and Computer.
How: Children will work individually, small groups, and/or with a mentor to use
computer.

Why are you planning to teach this lesson? Why must this information/skill be presented to the students?

Learning about Community will help students meet physical needs and emotional
needs so that they can feel safe and secure. The lessons will stimulate and engage
curiosity of the world around them.

How does this lesson relate to the previous lesson? How does this lesson relate to future lessons?

Early Childhood Learning is constructed on a continuum, based on prior experiences


and knowledge. Children at this age build their knowledge through play. Children will
be given opportunity to build skills and actively explore the topic of the Community
through hands on experiences using the computer and various art media. They will be
prompted to use knowledge of community as they engage in play in the Centers in our
classroom.

How will you determine if students have met the lesson objective? (Think assessment)
Children are assessed through Anecdotal Notes based on the seven domains of Work
Sampling.

How should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (lecture, whole group activities, small

group activities, cooperative learning groups…)
