The Resurgence of America Though Youth Sports:

An Annotated Bibliography

Inquiry: What are the current impacts of youth sports in todays world and how can we

use them to improve as a society for the future?

Proposed Thesis: Through the restructure and reintroduction of proper youth sports and

the lessons that are to be learned in them, we can evaluate just how youth sports impact

our society as a whole and use them to strengthen our nation through the youth for years

to come.

Anderson-Butcher, Dawn, et al. "Maximizing Youth Experiences in Community Sport

Settings: The Design and Impact of the Life Sports Camp." Journal of Sport

Management, vol. 28, no. 2, Mar. 2014, pp. 236-249. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1123/jsm.2012-

0237.

Anderson goes to great depths in her article by looking at the impact that youth

sports has on a community in developing sport and social skills among vulnerable youth.

She examines how through the involvement of sports these at risks kids developed not

only skills necessary for sports but also for life as well, and he finds that systematic

reviews of research showcase the many physical, psychological, social, emotional, and

intellectual benefits of youth sport participation. This source will be great for bringing in

smaller claims like Fact or Definition to help support the overall central claim in my
paper. It provides great explanations to the meanings of key points in the article while

providing statistics gathered from real life situations and communities to back up the

claims as well. This is a great reliable source from a credible journal. Its been reviewed

by other authors and journalist and is apart of a volume series as well. The source does

seem to have bias towards youth sports only being a positive thing and doesnt seem to

account for any negatives, although it did state in their own research that there were

limitations such as leaving out the coaches as variables.

"Benefits Of Sports To A Child's Mind And Heart All Part Of The Game." NPR. NPR,

n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017.

This article provides us with a personal experience of the positive impacts and

lessons that can be learned through youth sports. The article focuses on a family from

southern California and how and why they youth sports have come to play a significant

role in their lives. It talks about how their kids have prepared for the much bigger picture

and role in life by working through difficult situations in life and learning to work

together as a team. Throughout the article some of the families claims are backed by

quotes from professors from colleges such as Harvard and even scientist as well.

Although this piece offers great personal experiences for my paper it is quite biased based

on the fact that only a family with positive youth sport experiences was interviewed.

There are some good things I can take from this piece to help me in my paper but I will

have to caution how much I use from the source and exactly what I use to make sure it is

credible and backed up.

In this article Joe Drape interviews Jim Thompson, an author and the founder of

the Positive Coaching Alliance whos goal is to transform youth sports so sports can

transform the youth in his series Youth Sports, a Bigger Picture. Drape asks Thompson

questions about what youth sports are missing, the mistakes being made in them and what

youth sports should really be about. Thompson replies with straightforward, honest

answers that show the true side of what youth sports should involve and what their main

purpose should be. Thompson states the negatives of some of the coaching in youth

sports but provides solutions along with them. I really like this article because it answers

most of the my main inquiry questions we have in youth sports and really shows the true

nature of what youth sports should be like. Also the questions are answered by the

founder of a national nonprofit organization whos goal is very similar to my thesis. I

think this is a good credible source having 160 volumes, and being published by the New

York Times. The source is fairly biased, the questions asked are not biased at all and do

not push for specific answers, but because Thompson is the founder of the Positive

Coaching Alliance there is some bias in his answers.

Matz, Eddie. "The kids are alright." ESPN. ESPN Internet Ventures, 21 Feb. 2014. Web.

06 Feb. 2017.

This article offers a different perspective than most when it comes to youth sports,

it looks at the toll it can take on a kid to train and work starting at such a young age to

succeed in todays level of competition. Eddie Matz tells the stories of young athletes

who are forced to dedicate themselves every day of the year to their sport in order to be

successful. Whether they are forced by their parents or just by playing youth sports at

such a high level depends on the scenario but both are detrimental to the young athlete. I

like this article because it shows a side of sports not many people see and just how much

it really takes. It offers a view of the negative side of youth sports, which can inversely

develop my inquiry even better. Even with a good new perspective the source came from

an all sports network leading to believe there is bias in it.

"Maximizing the Benefits of Youth Sport." JOPERD: The Journal of Physical Education,

Recreation & Dance, vol. 84, no. 7, Sept. 2013, pp. 8-13. EBSCOhost,

doi:10.1080/07303084.2013.820112.

This article provides a detailed research layout of all the types of benefits that

come through youth sports and how to maximize their potential. The article is broken up

into separate categories such as physical benefits, psychological benefits,

intellectual/academic benefits, and social benefits. Under each category is a list of

possible benefits that you can see from participating in youth sports and what makes

these benefits more likely to happen. This article will help me explain why and how

youth sports is beneficial to not only ourselves but to our society as well, and allow me to
better develop my claims with its extensive analysis of each benefit. This article is a legit

source, it comes from a journal, has more than one volume and is peer review with an

additional list of refrences at the end. However the article does appear to be biased, it

only talks about the positive impact youth sports can have and doesnt mention any

negatives.

Merkel, Donna L. "Youth sport: positive and negative impact on young athletes." Open

Access Journal of Sports Medicine. Dove Medical Press, 2013. Web. 06 Feb. 2017.

Youth Sport: positive and negative impact on young athletes by Merkel hits on

and explains every key component needed to answer my inquiry questions and draft a

paper. The article provides in depth analysis on both the positives and negatives in youth

sports, along with the future of youth sports and how they must be handled as well. The

positives focus on physical well being, improved metal state, and developmental social

skills. The negatives talk about increase in injury, poor economic situations caused by

medical bills or high cost of sports, and how unnecessary mental pressure is bad for

young kids. The source his highly credible, peer reviewed, and has zero bias throughout

the whole article. This article has just about everything Ill need to support and explain

my claims while offering the right amount of rhetoric for the final paper.
