Description of the Lord's Appearance

Text 1

r-bahulva uvca - r Bahulva said; mune - O sage; deva - O lord;


mahtmna - exalted; kam - Ka; dv - seeing; part - than the
greatest; param - greater; agre - in the presence; ki - what?; cakrire - did; tatra
- there; tat - that; me - to me; brhi - tell; kp - mercy; kuru - do.

r Bahulva said; O sage, O lord, what did they do when they saw the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Ka, who is greater than the greatest?
Please be kind and tell me.

Text 2

r-nrada uvca

sarvea payata te
vaikuho 'pi haris tata utthya-bhuja skl
lno 'bht ka-vigrahe

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; sarveam - of all; payata - looking;


te - of them; vaikuho - Ka; api - also; haris - Lord Hari; tata - then;
utthya - rising; a-bhuja - with eight arms; skt - directly; lno - entered;
abht - became; ka-vigrahe - in Ka's form.

r Nrada said: As everyone looked on, Lord Hari, the eight-armed master of
Vaikuha, appeared and merged in the the body of Lord Ka.

tadaiva cgata pro


nsihas ca-vikrama koi-srya-pratko
lno 'bht ka-tejasi

tad - then; eva - indeed; ca - also; gata - came; pro - perfect; nsihas -
Nsiha; ca-vikrama - ferocious; koi-srya-pratko - splendid as millions
of suns; lno - merged; abht - became; ka-tejasi - in Lord Ka's
effulgence.

The perfect, ferocious, and powerful Lord Nrsiha, who was effulgent as
millions of suns, merged in Lord Ka's effulgence.

Text 4

rathe laka-haye ubhre


sthita cgatavs tata vetadvpdhipo bhm
sahasra-bhuja-maita

rathe - in a chariot; laka - with a hundred thousand; haye - horses; ubhre -


splendid; sthita - standing; ca - also; gatavn - arrived; tata - then;
vetadvpa-adhipo - the master of vetadvpa; bhm - the Lord; sahasra-
bhuja-maita - decorated with a thousand arms.

Then the master of vetadvpa, who was decorated with a thousand arms,
came in a splendid chariot drawn by a hundred thousand horses.

riy yukta svyudhhya


pradai parievita sampralno babhvu
so 'pi r-ka-vigrahe

riy - the goddess of fortune; yukta - with; sva - own; yudha - with
weapons; hya - opulent; pradai - by associates; parievita - served;
sampralno - merged; babhva - became; u - at once; so - he; api - also; r-
ka-vigrahe - in r Ka's form.

Opulent with many weapons, accompanied by the goddess of fortune, and


served by many associates, He suddenly merged in the body of r Ka.

tad - then; eva - indeed; ca - also; gata - come; skd - directly; rmo -
Rmacandra; rajva - lotus; locana - eyes; dhanur - bow; ba - and arrows;
dhara - holding; st - with St; obhito - glorious; bhrtbhir - by brothers;
vta - accompanied; daa - ten; koi - ten million; arka - of suns; sake -
splendor; cmarair - with cmaras; dolite - moved; rathe - on the chariot;
asakhya - countless; vaara - monkey; indra - kings; ahye - opulent; laka - ten
thousand; cakra - wheels; ghana - deep; svane - sound; laka - ten thousand;
dhvaje - flags; laka - ten thousand; haye - horses; atakaumbhe - golden;
sthitas - standing; tata - then; r-ka-vigrahe - in Lord Ka's body; pra
- perfect; sampralno - merged; babhva - became; ha - indeed.

Then, holding a bow and arrows, glorious with St, and accompanied by His
brothers, lotus-eyed Lord Rmacandra came in a golden chariot that was
effulgent as a hundred million suns, (decorated) with swaying cmaras, opulent
with countless monkey- kings, rumbling with ten thousand wheels, (decorated
with) ten thousand flags, and (pulled by) ten thousand horses, and merged in
the body of Lord Ka.

Texts 9 and 10

dakihya surevara so 'pi lno babhvu
r-ke yma-vigrahe

tad - then; eva - indeed; ca - also; gata - came; skd - directly; yajas -
Yaj{.sy 241}a; nryao - Nryaa; hari - Hari; prasphurat-pralayopa-
jvalad-agni - in the blazing fires of cosmic devastation; ikh - a flame; upama -
like; rathe - ona chariot; jyotirmaye - effulgent; dye - beautiful; daki - with
His consort Deki; hya - opulent; sura - of the demigods; vara - the
master; so - He; api - even; lno - merged; babhva - became; u - suddenly;
r-ke - in r Ka; yma - dark; vigrahe - form.

Then Lord Yaja, who is known as Nryaa and Hari, who is glorious like a
flame in the fire of cosmic devastation, who is the master of the demigods, and

who is glorious with His consort Dakia, came in a splendid and beautiful
chariot and suiddenly merged in the dark form of Lord Ka.

tad - then; ca - also; gatavn - come; skt - directly; nara-nryaa -


Nara-Nryaa; prabhu - Lord; catur-bhujo - four arms; vila - large; ako -
eyes; muni - as a muni; veo - dressed; ghana - as a dark cloud; dyuti -
splendor; tait - of lightning flashes; koi - millions; jajuta - matted hair;
prasphurad-dpta-maala - splendid; munndra- maalair - by the great
sages; divyair - splendid; maito - decorated; akhaita-vrata - observing an
unbroken vow of celibacy; sarve - of all; payatm - looking; tem - of
them; carya - wonder; manas - heart; npa - O king; so - He; api - also; lno -
merged; babhva - became; u - suddenly; r-ke - in r Ka; yma -
dark; sundare - and handsome.

Then Lord Nara-Nryaa, whose eyes were large, who had four arms, who
was dressed as a sage, who was splendid like a dark cloud, whose matted hair
was a lightning flash, who observed an unbroken vow (of celibacy), and who was
surrounded by splendid multitudes of the kings of sages, suddenly merged in the
handsome dark form of Lord Ka as everyone looked on, their hearts filled
with wonder.

paripratama skt - the original Supreme Personality of Godhead r-
kam - r Ka; ca - also; svayam - personally; prabhum - the Lord; j{.sy
241}tv - knowing; dev - the demigods; stutim - prayers; cakru - did; para
- great; vismayam - wonder; gata - attained.

Filled with wonder, and now understanding that r Ka is the original


Supreme Personality of Godhead, the demigods offered many prayers.

kya pra-puruya part parya


yajevarya para-kraa-kraya rdh-varya paripratamya skd-
goloka-dhma-dhiaya nama parasmai

r-devs - the demigods; cu - said; kya - to Ka; pra-puruya -


the Supreme Personality of Godhead; part - than the greatest; parya - greater;
yajevarya - the Lord of sacrifices; para- kraa-kraya - the cause of causes;
rdh-varya - the lover of Rdh; paripratamya - the original Lord; skd-
goloka-dhma-dhiaya - who resides in Goloka; nama - obeisances; parasmai
- to the Supreme.

The demigods said: Obeisances to r Ka, who is the Supreme Personality


of Godhead, greater than the greatest, the master of sacrifices, the cause of
causes, the lover of Rdh, the most perfect, and the Lord who resides in Goloka.

Text 16

yogevara kila vadanti maha para tv


tatraiva stvatatam kta-vigraha ca asmbhir adya vidita padayor dvaya
te
tasmai namo 'stu mahas pataye parasmai

yogevara - the masters of yoga; kila - indeed; vadanti - say; maha -


effulgence; para - supreme; tva - You; tatra - there; eva - indeed;
stvatatam - the devotees; kta - done; vigraha - form; ca - also; asmbhir -
by us; adya - today; vidita - known; padayor - of the feet; dvaya - pair; te - to
You; tasmai - Him; namo - obeisances; astu - may be; mahas - of the
effulgence; pataye - the master; parasmai - to the Supreme.

The masters of yoga say You are the Brahman effulgence, and the great
devotees say You have a form. Today we understand Your feet. Obeisances to
You, the master of the Brahman effulgence.

Text 17

vyagyena v na na hi lakaay kadpi


sphoena yac ca kavayo na vianti mukhy nirdeya-bhva-rahita prakte
para ca
tv brahma nirguam aja araa vrajma

vyagyena - by implication; v - or; na - not; na - not; hi - indeed; lakaay -


indirectly; kadpi - ever; sphoena - manifest; yat - what; ca - and; kavayo -
philosophers; na - do not; vianti - enter; mukhy - primary meaning; nirdeya

- indescribable; bhva - nature; rahita - without; prakte - to matter; param -
superior; ca - and; tvam - You; brahma - the greatestBrahman; nirguam -
without qualities; aja - unborn; araa - shelter; vrajma - we go.

We take shelter of You, the unborn Supreme, who are free from the material
modes, who are beyond the world of matter, and who cannot be described. The
greatest philosophers cannot describe You, either directly, indirectly, or by the
most oblique hint.

Text 18

tv brahma kecid avayanti pare ca kla


kecit praskhyam apare bhuvi karma-rpam prve ca yogam apare kila kart-
bhvam
anyoktibhir na vidita araa gat sma

tvm - You; brahma - the greatest; kecid - some; avayanti - teach; pare -
others; ca - also; kla - time; kecit - some; praskhyam - the sum of
everything; apare - others; bhuvi - in the world; karma - of karma; rpam - the
form; prve - the first; ca - also; yogam - yoga; apare - others; kila - indeed;
kart-bhvam - the doer; anya - of others; uktibhir - by the words; na - not;
viditam - known; araam - shelter; gat - gone; sma - we.

Some teach that You are the greatest, some that You are time, some that You
are the sum total of everything, some that You are karma, some that You are
yoga, and some that You are the first cause. We take shelter of You, who cannot
be perfectly known by all their words.

Text 19

reyas-kar bhagavatas tava pda-sev


hitvtha trtha-yajandi tapa caranti jnena ye ca vidit bahu-vighna-saghai
santit kim u bhavanti na te ktrth

reyas - the good; kar - doing; bhagavatas - of the Lord; tava - of You; pda -
of the feet; sev - the service; hitv - abandoning; atha - then; trtha -
pilgrimage; yajana - sacrifice; di - beginning; tapas - austerity; caranti -
perform; jnena - with knowledge; ye - who; ca - and; vidit - understood; bahu-
vighna-saghai - with many great obstacles; santit - struck; kim u - how
miserably; bhavanti - are; na - not; te - they; ktrth - successful.

O Lord, they who reject the auspicious service of Your feet, and instead visit
holy places, perform sacrifices and austerities, and try to cultivate spiritual
knowledge are beaten by a host of obstacles. How miserably will they fail.

Text 20

vijpyam adya kim u deva aea-sk

ya sarva-bhta-hdayeu virjamna devair namadbhir amalaya-mukta-
dehais
tasmai namo bhagavate puruottamya

vijpyam - to be known; adya - today; kim u - how?; deva - O Lord; aea - of


everything; sk - the witness; ya - who; sarva - of all; bhta - living entities;
hdayeu - in the hearts; virjamna - manifest; devair - by the demigods;
namadbhir - bowing down; amala - pure; aya - hearts; mukta - liberated;
dehais - whose bodies; tasmai - to Him; namo - obeisances; bhagavate - to the
Lord; puruottamya - the Supreme Person.

What request shall we place before You today? The pure- hearted devotees
whose forms are not material offer respectful obeisances to You, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead who, the witness of everything, stays in everyone's
heart.

Text 21

yo rdhik-hdaya-sundara-candra-hra
r-gopik-nayana-jvana-mla-hra goloka-dhma-dhiaa-dhvaja di-deva
sa tva vipatsu vibudhn pariphi phi

yo - who; rdhik - of Rdh; hdaya - in the heart; sundara - handsome;


candra - moon; hra - necklace; r-gopik - of the gops; nayana - of the
eyes; jvana - life; mla - root; hra - taking; goloka-dhma-dhiaa - of the
abode of Goloka; dhvajas - the flag; di - the original; deva - Lord; sas - He;
tvam - You; vipatsu - in calamities; vibudhn - the demigods; pariphi - please
protect; phi - please protect.

O Lord, You are a necklace of moons r Rdh places over Her heart. You are
the source of life for the gops' eyes. You are a flag over Goloka. You are the
original Supreme Personality of Godhead. O Lord, from all calamities please
protect, please protect the demigods.

Text 22

vndvanea girirja-pate vrajea


gopla-vea-kta-nitya-vihra-lla rdh-pate rutidhardhipate 'ddhara tva
govardhanoddharaa durdhara-dharma-dhrin

vndvana - of Vndvana; a - O Lord; girirja - of the king of mountains;


pate - O Lord; vraja - of Vraja; a - O Lord; gopla-vea - as a cowherd boy; kta
- done; nitya - eternal; vihra-lla - pastimes; rdh - of Rdh; pate - O Lord;
rutidhara - of the great philosophers; adhipate - O Lord; uddhara - please
rescue; tva - You; govardhana - of Govardhana Hill; uddharaa - O lifter;
durdhara - impossible dharma-dhrin - the doer.

O king of Vndvana, O king of the mountains' king, O king of Vraja, O king
who enjoys cowherd-boy pastimes eternally, O king of Rdh, O king of the great
philosophers, O lifter of Govardhana Hill, O Lord who can do any impossible task,
please save us!

megha-gambhray gir

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; iti - thus; ukto - addressed; bhagavn


skt - Supreme Personality of Godhead; r-ko - r Ka; gokulevara -
the king of Gokula; pratyha - replied; praatn - offering obeisances; devn - to
the demigods; megha- gambhray - thunder; gir - with a voice.

r Nrada said: Addressed in this way, r Ka, who is the Supreme


Personality of Godhead and the king of Gokula, in a voice of thunder replied to
the demigods prostrate before Him.

he sura-jyeha he ambho
dev uta mad-vaca ydaveu ca janyadhvam
aai strbhir mad-jay

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; he - O; sura -


of the demigods; jyeha - eldest; he - O; ambho - iva; dev - O demigods;
uta - please hear; mad - My; vaca - words; ydaveu - in the Yadu dynasty;
ca - also; janyadhvam - please take birth; aai - by partial expansions; strbhir
- with your wives; mad - by My; jay - order.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O iva, O eldest of the demigods,


O demigods, hear My words. By My order you and your wives should take birth,
by your aa expansions, in the family of the Yadus.

Text 25

aha cvatariymi
hariymi bhuvo bharam kariymi ca va krya
bhaviymi yado kule

aham - I; ca - also; avatariymi - will descend; hariymi - I will remove;


bhuvo - of the earth; bharam - the burden; kariymi - I will do; ca - also; va - of

you; krya - the work; bhaviymi - I will be; yado - of the Yadus; kule - in the
family.

I will also descend. I will remove the earth's burden. I will perform the work
you (request). I will take birth in the Yadus' family.

Text 26

ved me vacana vipr


mukha gvas tanur mama agni devat yya
sdhavo hy asavo hdi

ved - the Vedas; me - My; vacanam - word; viprs - the brhmaas;


mukha - mouth; gvas - the cows; tanur - body; mama - My; agni - limbs;
devats - demigods; yya - you; sdhavo - the saintly devotees; hi - indeed;
asavo - the breath; hdi - in the heart.

The Vedas are My words. The brhmaas are My mouth. The cows are My
body. You demigods are My limbs. My devotees are the life- breath in My heart.

Text 27

yuge yuge ca badhyeta


yad pkhibhir janai dharma kratur day sakat
tad tmna sjmy aham

yuge yuge - millennium after millennium; ca - also; badhyeta - stopped; yad


- when; pkhibhir janai - by blasphemers; dharma - religion; kratur -
sacrifice; day - mercy; sakat - directly; tad - then; tmnam - Myself; sjmi -
appear; aham - I.

Millennium after millennium, whenever the blasphemers stop religion,


sacrifice, and mercy, I descend Myself.

ity uktavanta jagad-vara hari


rdh patim prha viyoga-vihval dvgnin dva-lateva mrchit-
ru-kampa-romcita-bhva-samvt

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; iti - thus; uktavantam - spoken; jagad -


of the universe; vara - the master; hari - Lord Ka; rdh - r Rdh;
patim - Her master; prha - said; viyoga - separation; vihval - agitated;
dvgnin - with a forest fire; dva - on fire; lat - a vine; iva - like; mrchit -

fainted; aru - tears; kampa - trembling; romcita - hairs standing erect; bhva -
ecstasy; samvt - possessing.

r Nrada said: When Her husband, Lord Ka, the master of the
universes, had spoken, r Rdh, overcome with fear of being separated from
Him, and now like a flowering vine burning in a great forest fire, weeping,
trembling, about to faint unconscious, and the hairs of her body erect, spoke to
Him.

Text 29

r-rdhovca

bhuvo bhara hartum ala bhuva vraja


kta para me apatha uva tat gate tvayi pra-pate ca vigraha
kadcid atraiva na dhraymy aham

r-rdh uvca - r Rdh said; bhuvo - of the earth; bharam - the burden;
hartum - to remove; alam - greatly; bhuva - to the earth; vraja - go; ktam -
done; param - great; me - of Me; apatha - vow; uva - hear; tat - that;
gate - gone; tvayi - when You; pra - of life; pate - O Lord; ca - also; vigraha -
form; kadcid - ever; atra - here; eva - indeed; na - not; dhraymi - maintain;
aham - I.

r Rdh said: Go to the earth and remove its burden! Hear My great vow. O
Lord of My life, when You are gone I will not keep my body (alive) in this place.

Text 30

yadtha me tva apatha na manyase


dvitya-vra pravadmi vk-patham pra ca me gantum atva-vihvala
karpra-dhli-kaavad bhaviyati

yad - when; atha - then; me - My; tvam - You; apatha - vow; na - not;
manyase - think; dvitya - a second; vram - time; pravadmi - I speak; vk-
patham - the words; pras - life; ca - also; me - of Me; gantum - to go; atva-
vihvala - very eager; karpra-dhli-kaavad - like particles of camphor;
bhaviyati - will be.

If You do not believe My words, I will say them a second time. (If You go) then
My life, yearning to depart, will become like camphor dust.

tvay saha gamiymi


m oka kuru rdhike hariymi bhuvo bhra

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; tvay - You;


saha - with; gamiymi - I will go; m - don't; oka - unhappiness; kuru - do;
rdhike - O Rdh; hariymi - I will remove; bhuvo - of the earth; bhra - the
burden; kariymi - I will fulfill; vacas - words; tava - Your.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: I will go with You. O Rdh, don't
lament. I will remove the earth's burden and I will keep Your word.

yatra vndvana nsti


yatra no yamun nad yatra govardhano nsti
tatra me na mana-sukham
r-rdhik uvca - r Rdh said; yatra - where; vndvana - Vndvana;
na - not; asti - is; yatra - where; na - not; u - indeed; yamun - the Yamun;
nad - river; yatra - where; govardhano - Govardhana Hill; na - not; asti - is;
tatra - there; me - of Me; na - not; mana - of the heart; sukham - happiness.

r Rdh said: My heart cannot be happy where there is no Vndvana


forest, no Yamun river, and no Govardhana Hill.

Text 33

veda-nga-kroa-bhmi
sva-dhamna r-hari svayam govardhana ca yamun
preaym sa bhpari

r-nrada uvca - r Nrada said; veda-nga - 47; kroa - kroas; bhmi


- land; sva-dhamna - own abode; r-hari - r Ka; svayam - personally;
govardhanam - Govardhana; ca - and; yamun - Yamun; preaym sa - sent;
bh-upari - to the earth.

r Nrada said: Then Lord Ka sent to the earth Govardhana Hill, the
Yamun river, and a 47 kroa portion of His abode.

Note: One kroa equals two miles.

natv natv puna puna paripratama skc
chr-ka samuvca ha

tad - then; brahm - Brahm; deva-gaair - with the demigods; natv -
bowing; natv - and bowing; puna - again; puna - and again; paripratama
skt - to the original Supreme Personality of Godhead r-ka - r Ka;
samuvca ha - said.

Bowing and bowing again and again with the demigods, Brahm addressed
the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, r Ka.

aha kutra bhaviymi


kutra tva ca bhaviyasi ete kutra bhaviyanti
kair ghai kai ca nmabhi

r-brahm uvca - r Brahm said; aha - I; kutra - where?; bhaviymi -


will be; kutra - where; tvam - You; ca - also; bhaviyasi - will be; ete - they; kutra
- where; bhaviyanti - will be; kair - with what?; ghai - homes; kais - with
what?; ca - also; nmabhi - names.

r Brahm said: Where will I take birth? Where will You take birth? Where will
the (demigods) take birth? In what homes? With what names?

Text 36

r-bhagavn uvca

vasudevasya devaky
bhaviymi para svayam rohiy mat-kal eo
bhaviyati na saaya

r-bhagavn uvca - the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; vasudevasya


- of Vasudeva; devaky - in Devak; bhaviymi - I will be; para -
transcendental; svayam - personally; rohiym - in Rohi; mat-kal - my kal
expansion; eo - ea; bhaviyati - will be; na - no; saaya - doubt.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: I will take birth in Devak from
Vasudeva. My transcendental kal expansion ea will take birth in Rohi. Of
this there is no doubt.

Text 37

r skd rukmi bhaim


iv jmbavat tath saty ca tulas bhmau
satyabhm vasundhar

r - the goddess of fortune; skd - directly; rukmi - Rukmi; bhaim
- the daughter of Bhmaka; iv - Prvat; jmbavat - Jmbavat; tath - so;
saty - Saty; ca - also; tulas - Tulas; bhmau - on the earth; satyabhm -
Satyabhm; vasundhar - Vasundhar.

The goddess of fortune will take birth as Bhmaka's daughter Rukmi. Lord
iva's consort will take birth as Jmbavat. Tulas will take birth as Saty and
Vasundhar as Satyabhm.

Text 38

daki lakma caiva


klind viraj tath bhadr hrr mitravind ca
jhnav ppa-nin

daki - Daki; lakma - Lakma; ca - also; eva - indeed; klind -


Klind; viraj - Viraj; tath - so; bhadr - Bhadr; hrr - Hr; mitravind -
Mitravind; ca - also; jhnav - Jhnav; ppa - sins; nin - destroying.

Daki will become Lakma, Viraj will become Klind, Hr will become
Bhadr, and Jhnav, who destroys sins, will become Mitravind.

Text 39

rukmiy kmadeva ca
pradyumna iti viruta bhaviyati na sandehas
tasya tva ca bhaviyasi

rukmiy - in Rukmi; kmadevas - Kmadeva; ca - and; pradyumna -


Pradyumna; iti - thus; viruta - known; bhaviyati - will be; na - no; sandehas -
doubt; tasya - of him; tva - you; ca - and; bhaviyasi - will be.

(Born) in Rukmi, Kmadeva will be known as Pradyumna. You will take birth
as his son. Of this there is no doubt.

Text 40

nando droo vasu skd

The Vasu Droa will become Nanda, and Dhar will be remembered as
Yaod. Sucandra will take birth as Vabhnu, and his wife Kalvat will also
take birth.

bhmau krtir iti khyt


tasy rdh bhaviyati sad rsa kariymi
gopbhir vraja-maale

bhmau - on the earth; krtir - Krti; iti - thus; khyt - known; tasym - in
her; rdh - Rdh; bhaviyati - will take birth; sad - always; rsam - the rsa
dance; kariymi - I will do; gopbhir - with the gops; vraja - of Vraja; maale -
in the circle.

On the earth she will be known as Krti. In her Rdh will take birth. Again
and again I will perform the rsa dance in the circle of Vraja with the gops.
