Lesson

Were All the Same


Grade: 8th
Time: 60 minutes
Standards:
PS: A1.8: Understand the need for self-control and how to practice it

Objective: Students will be able to share their experiences with bullying in an


anonymous survey, and develop a plan to better their school environment.

Materials:
Student survey
Pen/pencil
Whiteboard
Dry erase markers
Poster board (to write official bullying plan on)
Markers

Procedure:
1. Explain to students that you want to learn more about kids who bully other kids, and ask
them to complete the survey without signing their names.
2. Give the students 20-30 minutes to fill out the survey.
3. Teacher will quickly review the surveys while students are discussing ways they believe
we can prevent bullying in our school.
4. Invite students to guess the results.
5. Read some samples from the students' responses.
6. Ask a volunteer to help tally the survey results on the whiteboard; then ask students to
add the responses to each question. Help students determine percentages for each
answer.
7. Discuss the survey results, and brainstorm with students about what they can do to
reduce bullying at school
8. As a class, write up a plan to implement to help reduce bullying at school.
Assessment: As our closing activity, we will have the students all sign the plan and
pledge to implement it in our school. Students will be evaluated based on their
participation in the class discussion.
