1.5 Anticipatory Set

Good Morning everyone! Take your seats and put your books on the floor.
We all have emotions and feelings, and we all express our feelings in different ways.
Today, I felt frustrated because I was stuck in traffic. What kind of emotions have you felt today? Call on 2-3
students to have them share how they have felt this week.
Please look up at the front board; do these pictures look familiar to anyone? Have you seen these images
before? The teacher will have the PowerPoint presentation up on the front board Slide 2.
Can anyone tell me what these are called? There are pictures of Emojis on the Smartboard. The teacher will
call on a student to answer.
Yes, these are Emojis, where have you seen them before? Students will share where they have seen Emojis
before, they will describe how they use them on their cell phones when texting.
When youre texting your friends, when do you use Emojis? Call on a student to answer, discuss how we use
Emojis to express our feelings. Sometimes over text it is difficult to sense how someone is feeling, so we can
use Emojis to help us understand what they are feeling as well as to show the person we are texting how we
are feeling.
Lets look at a conversation I had with a friend the other day (Slide 3): Present the conversation on the front
board. Read the conversation aloud.
What do you think I meant with my response? How do you think I felt when she said that? Call on student(s)
to respond about what I meant when using that Emoji.
Yes, I felt sad.
Does anyone know another word for describing sad? If the students are struggling respond: There are many
ways to describe feeling sad I could have been upset or disappointed.

Reading:

Look around the room and see the pictures of the Emojis. Teacher will point to the pictures around the room.
I will read a scenario aloud, and you will walk to the Emoji representing the feeling you would have based
on that scenario.
Lets practice, I will say a scenario and Mrs. Werley will walk to an Emoji of the emotion that she is feeling.
You tripped and fell in front of your entire class. Embarrassed.
You stayed up really late playing video games. Tired.
Your mom bought you a special gift that you were not expecting. Surprised.
You just found out your best friend is moving. Sad.
Your brother took your favorite game without asking and broke it. Angry.
You have a really bad cold, your throat hurts, and you had a headache. Sick.
You are playing your favorite game with your best friend. Happy
When its Spring Break and youre at home with nothing to do. Bored
When you cant solve a math problem after trying many times. Frustrated.
When you have one school day left before spring break. Excited.
After each round of scenarios, the teacher will ask 1-2 students: Why did you choose to stand at that Emoji?
How do you feel? The students will explain their reasoning, and also explain how they felt about the
scenario being read.

Post-Reading:
Great job everyone! We are now going to complete a worksheet where I want all of you to write about times
when you have these feelings. The teacher will hand out the worksheet to each student.
Number one says, I feel happy when write about something that makes you happy, are you playing a
game, etc. The teacher will then read each beginning sentence for the students.
Please complete the entire worksheet and let me know if you have any questions.
o If there is not enough time for the students to complete the worksheet then the teacher will
instruct the students to choose 5 emotions on the worksheet.

1.7 Differentiation

This lesson was differentiated specifically for ELL students. I incorporated the use of Emojis to connect the
content to the students background knowledge.
Have the students repeat the feeling word aloud after I say the word, this is so the students really know how
to pronounce the words as well as create a connection with saying the word and the meaning. Also, when
talking about the different feelings, the teacher will describe and act out the physical characteristics of the
feelings. This will help the ELL students to also picture the physical characteristics of the feelings while also
learning the English word.
During the activity, the students will walk to the Emoji to express the feeling based on the scenario read.
The students will then say what feeling the Emoji is represented explain why they chose to stand by that
feeling. This will help the students to make a connection with their background knowledge, Emojis, and
feelings.

1.8 Closure

To close the lesson the teacher will have each student go around the room and share one of the sentences
they wrote from the worksheet. The students will be instructed to share a sentence using a feeling that has
not been shared yet.
o If there is extra time after the students have completed the worksheet then have the students share
more of the sentences.
As you can see, everyone has feelings and there are a lot of situations that can make us feel different things.
As you go through the rest of your day, try and acknowledge how different events through your day make
you feel.

1.9 Technology
A PowerPoint is being used.

2.0 Reflection on Planning

To plan this lesson I first thought about using pictures and images to help represent feelings. I decided to
use Emojis because the students are Middle School students and I thought since it is relevant in their lives,
is was a good way to grab their attention, as well as for them to make connections. I chose to use images and
visuals as a strategy to help strengthen the students understanding for the ELLs.
I spoke with my mentor teacher as well as another ELL teacher that I know from my part-time job to get
her input. She had some great ideas about prompting the students to have them answer the questions
throughout the lesson. She also gave me the idea of putting the Emojis around the room, also not putting the
feeling word with them so that they will be able to name the feeling, and also include other names of the
way we can say one feeling.
Lastly, I chose to have the students complete a worksheet where they finish the sentences of a time they
felt each emotion discussed in class. I thought that this would help the students to make that connection to
themselves and to make them aware of the different events in their lives and how those events/situations
make them feel.
