Jennifers Lesson Study: Reflection

On Tuesday we observed a third grade social studies lesson. The teachers did a great job

of demonstrating TPE 2, monitoring students during instruction and TPE 7, teaching English

learners. The teachers demonstrated these TPEs by using a variety of strategies.

The teachers demonstrated TPE 2, monitoring students during instruction by walking

around and facilitating discussion. The head teacher also modeled the activity first with the

students and asked for the students input (guided practice). While the teacher was doing this

guided practice with the students she was also monitoring by listening to their responses to the

questions, What do you predict?, What do you observe?, and What do you wonder? The second

strategy that the teachers used was to write down the jobs on the board. While the student teacher

was explaining the instructions of the activity she asked if anyone had any questions. Those who

did have questions asked and those questions were clarified by both teachers.

TPE 7, teaching English learners, was demonstrated by the student teacher and her head

teacher. They used strategies such as; providing the students with pictures and images to support

their learning, writing down the instructions on the board, and had them work in groups to

collaborate. Particularly the writing down of the instructions and rotations supported visual

learners (all students) and those with auditory processing difficulties.

To conclude, these teachers did a great job of using strategies that provided their English

learners with the support and to monitor students learning. The students learned to look at

different images, observe those images and learned to put their thoughts, observations,

predictions and wonderings on paper. We know that the students were learning this because as

we were walking around I could hear the students discussing their observations, their

wonderings, and predictions. They were also learning how to collaborate as a group. I noticed

some groups had a more difficult time collaborating with each other than others. However, even

the groups that were having a hard time managed to collaborate even if it was only for a short

period of time. I also noticed that those groups were able to work better together when an adult

or teacher was facilitating the discussion.

I will use these strategies as a student teacher and in my own classroom by providing

my students with pictures to support their learning, writing down instructions on the board for

those visual learners and for students to refer back to. I will also provide my students with

activities where they have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers, thare their thoughts,

and learn from their peers ideas. As a way to assess student learning or to learn what my students

interests are, I will use an exit ticket like it was done in this lesson. All of these strategies were

helpful in giving me ideas on how to use them in my own classroom someday.
