That seva is fruitful, which is acceptable to the True Guru. Because acceptability of Satguru is
essential in order for the sins to get washed away. The Sikhs (followers) lend an ear to any
instructions that come to them from the Satguru - i.e. they listen very carefully to all the
instructions given to them by their Guru. And those who accept Guru’s teachings with a smiling
face and put them into practice, their glory increases fourfold. This path of staying close to the
Guru is unique from the paths of the rest of the world, because in this path one listens to, acts
upon the instructions of the Guru and gets deeply absorbed in the love of Waheguru-
Akalpurakh.

The Seva of those devotees who are acceptable to Waheguru-Akalpurakh should be rendered
in many many ways. All the possessions including our life and soul should be placed at their
disposal. Serve them selflessly by bringing water for them and fanning them to make them
comfortable. These devotees of Waheguru are so great that I wish to sacrifice myself upon
them. Only in the company of such a blessed soul who is acceptable to Waheguru-Akalpurakh
one can meet( realize) Him(Pause). May I get the opportunity to serve even the slave of their
slaves. May I be able to walk on the footsteps of such devoted souls. The company of such
good people is obtained by some good fortune. Then Waheguru-Akalpurakh will meet without
delay, when the ties of love become strong. I am prepared to give away the meditation that I do,
all the austerity and the prayer-routines that I observe. I am prepared to set on fire all the rituals
and other religious duties that I perform. I will become very humble like the dust of the feet by

abandoning all my ego, so that I can have a vision of Waheguru Akalpurakh with my own eyes
in the company of these saintly people. May this prayer of seeking the company of such saintly
people be always on my lips and may I think of doing their seva day and night. O Nanak one is
blessed with the company of saints, only when the Great Waheguru - the Creator and sustainer
of the World becomes merciful.

The undeceivable Maya can neither be deceived, nor injured by the use of a dagger. This Maya
strictly follows the command of Waheguru-Akalpurakh. However, this greedy human mind has
an unending craving for Maya. How a lamp is lighted without oil? (Pause) Let us put the oil of
divine knowledge from holy books into the lamp of our body and put the wick of the fear of
Waheguru in it. Let us develop full understanding of the absolute Truth - Waheguru-Akalpurakh
and make this the fire to light the lamp of life. This is how this lamp of life is lighted. Generate
the light of Naam this way and than only you will be able to meet(realize) Waheguru-Akalpurakh
(pause). All those who get affected by Gurbani get peace and happiness by acting upon the
guidance given in Gurbani (i.e. by doing this seva). And this world appears perishable to them.
Dedicate yourself to the service of Waheguru-Akalpurakh, i.e. act upon the teachings of your
Guru. Than only a seat is assured in the court of Waheguru. O Nanak! This is how one
becomes worry-free and lives in joy for ever.

If any one wishes to get all the four kinds of worldly virtues ( Moral duty, worldly wealth, success
and salvation), one should dedicate oneself to the service of saintly people. If any one wishes to
get rid of their sorrows and pain, one should develop a longing for Waheguru-Akalpurakh - i.e.
one should remember Waheguru from the core of one’s heart. If one wishes to be respected in
society, one should sit in the company of Waheguru’s devotees and get rid of one’s ego. If any
one is afraid of the cycle of birth and death, one should seek refuge at the feet of Waheguru’s
devotees - i.e. follow the advise of His devotees. A person who is desperate to merge with

him with a great wish.

O my mind! This is what should be asked from Waheguru - the seed of the World: Service of
Your devotees(Saints) - who are deeply in love with You, company of a perfect Guru to get the
supreme guidance, and meditation of Your Naam in order to reach the highest stage of spiritual
life(Pause). May I always keep worshipping You and always stay close to You. May I accept
Waheguru’s Will with a smiling face. Their objective of coming into this world as human being
gets achieved on whom the grace of Satguru falls and they start doing whatever The True Guru
tells them to do. Ignorance and superstitions, which are the source of all the pains and
sufferings, leave them who constantly look for Guru’s guidance - i.e. whose mind is always at
the feet of their Guru. All those, who have devotedly gave place to Waheguru’s Naam in their
heart, while staying constantly in touch with their Guru, O Nanak! they alone have become
successful in finding (realizing) Waheguru-Akalpurakh who is perfect in all respect.

Come my friends, come, let us go to our Guru and serve him. Let us abandon our ego and wash
His feet(follow his instructions) and grind His wheat to produce flour(oblige him by doing
anything for him). i.e. Let us leave aside our ego and act upon Guru’s teachings. By abandoning
our ego, the sorrow of our mind gets eliminated. Therefore we should never show ourselves off.
O friends! let us all come under Guru’s refuge, accept all what he says, and let us all consider it
to be in our best interest whatever the Guru does. Let us come down to earth in humility, leaving
the sadness aside, and with folded hands - without questioning anything stay at His service 24
hours a day. Nanak says that through Guru’s advise only one can get to know Waheguru
Akalpurakh. Therefore let us get together friends and start serving our True Guru.

The principle of serving the Guru has been in existence for ages. Only a perfect follower of the
Guru gets the job done. This gives birth to an inexhaustible treasure of Waheguru’s Naam,
which brings peace here and glory hereafter. O my mind, never doubt the instructions of the
Guru. By acting upon the instruction of the Guru, drink the life giving nectar of Naam (pause).
Those who serve the Satguru (i.e. those who put into practice the teachings of the Guru) are
considered Great men in the world. They themselves get across this great ocean of Maya and
take along with them their entire families. They keep the Name of Waheguru-Akalpurakh deep
down in their heart and their devoted involvement in Naam takes them across this vast ocean of
Maya. They serve their Satguru with utmost humility. As the ego leaves them, the lotus of their
mind starts to bloom. The soothing music of ecstasy keeps ringing in their mind and the
wandering of their mind stops as if they have come back home. Being very much absorbed in
Waheguru’s Naam, they stay detached even though they lead a normal family life. Those who
serve their Satguru, their utterances are full of truth. The devotees had been quoting and
explaining these utterances from ages. They always recite the Naam of Waheguru - the water of
a thirsty person. O Nanak, those who are imbued in Waheguru-Akalpurakh’s Naam are
detached and are in the state of bliss.

The service of Satguru is fruitful provided some one does it from the core of one’s heart. By
doing such a seva, all the desires get fulfilled and ego leaves the body. One gets free from all
the entanglements, gets saved and stays very much absorbed in Waheguru’s Naam. In this
world it is very hard to find Naam. It only comes to reside in the minds of those who have turned
their face towards the Guru (i.e. who have started following Guru’s instructions). O Nanak! Great
are those who serve their Guru from the bottom of their heart and I am a sacrifice unto them.

If Waheguru-Akalpurakh so desires, He may forgive meritless people by putting them in the

service of True Guru. O brother! superior-most is the seva of True Guru because you learn the
way to tune in to the Naam of Waheguru. Waheguru Himself forgives people and by His mercy
merges them with Himself. O brother! we were meritless sinners, but the True Guru has very
kindly permitted us to stay in His company(Pause). A number of sinners were forgiven by
putting them in touch with the understanding of the True word. They boarded this boat of Guru’s
Shabad and got across the ocean of Maya. This mind(iron) which got polluted (rusted)with sins
got purified (turned into gold) after meeting the Guru (Paras = a mythical stone which turns
metal into gold). The selfhood is gone and the Name of Waheguru has made its permanent
abode in the heart and the soul is merged in the Supersoul of Waheguru. I am a sacrifice to the
great Guru, who has blessed me with the treasure of Naam and the wisdom(Gurmat) to tune in
with Waheguru. Equipoise does not come without the Guru. You may confirm this fact from the
spiritually awakened wise people. Therefore always serve the True Guru without caring for
yourself. By acting upon Guru’s guidance, a respect for Waheguru develops, which is the most
important task to perform. And by keeping Waheguru’s Naam very close to heart, one falls in
love with Waheguru. Great are those who serve their Guru. They, not only make their coming
into this world worthwhile, but also help their families in getting forgiven for their sins. Only by
the grace of Guru, the true words of advise and the True Bani of Waheguru’s praises come to
reside in us. O Nanak! If the Name of Waheguru resides in the heart, then there will no troubles
or obstacles in the path to Waheguru-Akalpurakh.

Those saints are absolutely contented, who have acted upon Guru’s advice which leads to a
meeting with Waheguru-Akalpurakh. The spiritual heights of such people is indescribable, who
are blessed with the glory of Naam. Waheguru-Akalpurakh’s Naam is a priceless Jewel, which
is unattainable and is incomparable to any other precious stone(Pause). Those who have fallen
in love with the Waheguru, who can not be seen, they, in fact, have achieved the real
knowledge by the grace of Guru. While living and dealing with the world, their mind is in tune
with Waheguru-Akalpurakh because they have removed the ego from their mind. Those who
are in tune with Waheguru-Akalpurakh through the guidance of the Guru, have attained stability
of mind as their mind does not get influenced by Maya. Under the superior guidance of the
Guru, they always remain on the guard from the attacks of Maya and stay in tune with
Waheguru-Akalpurakh. They always remain fully contented because they have achieved the
stage of equipoise. O Nanak! they have grabbed the inexhaustible treasure of Waheguru-

Waheguru-Akalpurakh’s lovingly memory stays constantly in our heart only when His grace falls
upon us. Than the soul becomes tender and stays in tune with Him. When one’s soul merges
with the Supersoul of Waheguru, the feeling of duality vanishes. Waheguru is attained(realized)
through the guidance of the Guru. Once we start cherishing Waheguru, the fear of death goes

how one can stay detached while living in the midst of Maya..This is the greatness of True Guru
that one can attain spiritual heights while leading a family life. This is the way one should serve
Waheguru-Akalpurakh as a sevak. One should surrender one’s life to the One to whom it
belongs. And accept whatever is the will of one’s Lord. Then such a servant is glorified in the
court of Waheguru. When the Shabad of the Guru (= the image of the Guru) resides in the heart
of a servant - i.e. when a person puts into practice the teachings of the Guru, all the desires get
fulfilled. If the True Lord - Waheguru has becomes merciful, than why should this servant be
afraid of death. Nanak says: when one reflects on Guru’s word with full attention and falls in
love with Gurbani which leads a person to realize the absolute realty - Waheguru, one can
easily get salvaged from the influence of Maya. The word (of advise of Guru = Gurbani) in itself
is the real meditation(Jup) and the real penance(Tup).

absorbed in the Love of Waheguru, then I will consider this to be the greatest seva (Pause). For
me Waheguru is the essence of all the holy books and Waheguru is my brother as well as my
relative. I get hungry for Waheguru & Waheguru alone. I feel contented when I grasp
Waheguru’s Naam, Waheguru is my True Friend who will help me in the end. Without
Waheguru all other wealth is false because it does not go with us when we leave this world. My
True wealth is Waheguru, because it follows me wherever I go. They are false who clings to
falsehood (materialistic things) because they waste too much time accumulating these false
things. Nanak says: Whatever happens actually happens under Waheguru’s Will and it is very
hard to say what is right and what is wrong.

Waheguru - Akalpurakh, who is the Truest Guru, is all - in - all in every respect. I, the servant of
Yours seek the dust of Your feet and am a sacrifice untoYour vision - i.e. O my Lord! Bless me
so that I may accept Your Will. O My Waheguru! whatever way you keep people, they live
exactly the same way. If you so desire, people may tune themselves in Your Naam and get all
sorts of comforts of life (Pause). One can get salvaged from all the vices, get all the comforts,
and get to lead an ideal kind of life only if You bless them with the seva of singing Your praises.
Where Your praises are sung, O Waheguru! that place is heaven in the real sense. O
Compassionate Waheguru of the weak and depressed! Grant me the gift of the recitation of
Your Naam so that I can achieve spiritual heights. Also grant me this boon that I may accept
Your Will smilingly (i.e. I may drink the washings of Your feet). Great was that auspicious time
when I turned towards You (came to Your door). All this happened because Waheguru has
become so merciful to Nanak that He has so kindly put me in touch with a perfect True Guru.

Waheguru is intertwined with His devotees who serve Him like the warp and woof. Waheguru -
the giver of all comforts sustains His servant - devotees. I feel pleasure in serving the servants
of Waheguru and making their life comfortable (by serving them water, fanning them and
grinding their wheat to produce flour). After all the service of His people in itself is Waheguru’s
seva. Waheguru has cut off the shackles of attachments and gave me the task of His seva. This
servant of Waheguru has learnt to accept His Will. Now this mind does only those acts which
pleases Him and this servant has become an expert inside out. O Waheguru! You know what
goes on in everybody’s mind. You know all the ways to save us from the entanglements of
Maya. Your devotee-servants enjoy the bliss of being with You. Whatever is Yours O
Waheguru! belongs to your servants. They are very well known in public because Your Name is
attached to them( Because they are known as Your Devotees) Whoever got blessed with
respect in the court of Waheguru, their past record is wiped off. O Nanak! I am a sacrifice to
such an individual who is so deep, profound and priceless in approach.

O Waheguru! there are millions of hands that are blessed by You, to serve You and there are
millions of feet, that follow the spiritual path shown by You. Your Seva - i.e. to remember You
with devotion, is like a boat, which is bound to take us across this vast ocean of Maya provided
we decide to board the boat. Those who have adopted this path of keeping Waheguru-
Akalpurakh always in their mind (Simran) have, for sure, crossed this ocean of Maya and thus
all their objectives of life got fulfilled. Even the sins that were so hard to get rid of got eradicated
in no time. This gave birth to peace & happiness and my mind is filled with the divine music of
utmost joy. O Lord! You have fulfilled all the desires of Your devotee. How wonderful are You?
Nanak prays: O Waheguru-Akalpurakh have mercy on me and guide my mind to always follow
the path shown by You.

Those who are blessed with the gift of contentment by the Guru, their soul is at peace. Those
who have dedicated themselves to the service of Waheguru, their mind and body are in a state
of peace and equipoise. The strong bonds with all kinds of sins got loosened and the purpose
for which they came into this world got fulfilled. Ego has departed and there was no trace of evil
thoughts left by always keeping Waheguru-Akalpurakh’s Naam in memory. Their cycle of birth
and death got broken by taking shelter at the feet of Waheguru-Akalpurakh - i.e. by accepting
Waheguru’s Will. They got across this ocean of Maya along with their families by devoting
themselves to the singing of the praises of Waheguru-Akalpurakh. Serve Waheguru -
Akalpurakh by keeping Him in your mind all the time. O Nanak! The abode of all comforts -
Waheguru is attained by following the guidance of a perfect Guru.

Let me get the guidance of my Satguru on these questions: “ Whom should I serve? ” and “
What should be the mode of my meditation? ” “Get rid off all your ego and accept with utmost
humility, whatever the Satguru says. This act in itself is such a Seva that Waheguru-
Akalpurakh’s Naam makes a permanent abode in your mind. Naam is the source of all the
comforts and the Shabad (Gurbani) is the one which makes us well suited for Waheguru’s
Darbar.” O my mind! Always be vigilant against the attacks of vices on you and keep
Waheguru-Akalpurakh very close to your heart. Save the farm of your life from being spoiled,
because old age, like a Koonj, is fast approaching to take it away from you.(Pause) All the
desires of those will get fulfilled whose minds are fully in tune with Guru’s Shabad. They serve
their Waheguru with utmost devotion and feel His presence everywhere. They remain so much
absorbed in Guru’s Shabad that any doubts or superstitions stay miles away from them. They
have become one with Waheguru -Akalpurakh, who is All powerful, full of virtues and who alone
is the absolute realty. Those who are staying alert from the attacks of vices are getting saved
whereas those who are deep asleep under the intoxication of Maya(materialistic things) are
getting robbed. They failed to understand the significance of the True Shabad and, thus, their
life passed away in vain like a dream. They left this world empty handed like the guest of a
deserted house. What face a Manmukh (a self-centered person) will show to Waheguru, who
has wasted the golden chance of his life. Waheguru - Akalpurakh is all - in - all, but our ego
does not let us believe in it. By the able guidance (words) of the Guru, however, this realization
comes and the pain of ego, the greatest hindrance in the way to Waheguru-Akalpurakh, gets
eliminated. Those who serve their Satguru (those who follow the teachings of their Guru), I bow
before them. O Nanak! I am a sacrifice unto them who are adjudged to be the truthful people in
the court of Waheguru.p. 34

Only that meditation, austerity, or service is right, which is acceptable to Waheguru Akalpurakh.
By doing things that are to His liking, He Himself blesses us and merges us in Himself and thus
all the problems get solved. Once we become one with Waheguru-Akalpurakh, He always
keeps us close to Him and never leaves us. O Nanak ! this understanding develops by the
guidance of the Guru only in those on whom the grace of Waheguru-Akalpurakh will fall.

The way to realize (find) Waheguru is by serving the Guru - i.e. by acting upon the teachings of
the Guru but only if the Grace of Waheguru -Akalpurakh falls upon us. Any human being can
easily change to a superhuman being (an angel) if one learns to keep the Name of Waheguru -
Akalpurakh always in one’s minds. The great Guru’s words become instrumental in killing our
ego and help us to merge with Waheguru-Akalpurakh and get across this ocean of Maya. O
Nanak ! Waheguru-Akalpurakh has very smoothly merged the seekers in Himself through His
Own Grace.

To listen to Your Glorious Praises from your devotee, I may serve him/her, wipe the dust of

Grant me O Lord, grant me the gift of walking on the footsteps of such saintly people. I have

work hard to get rid of them. Please protect me from falling into the trap of duality, fear, and

For me Waheguru’s Name is the Vedas - religious books of Hindus, and Naad - the religious
book of the Yogis. Through Your Name all my things get taken care of. My way of worshipping
the gods is to recite Your Naam and to keep Waheguru’s Naam in my mind is the greatest seva
of my Guru. My perfect Guru has very kindly made me to understand the importance of Your
Naam. And to contemplate upon Your Naam is the greatest of all the jobs (Pause). Naam for me
is to take a holy dip at the various places of pilgrimage and to give charity to Brahmins. For me
the method of purifying oneself is done just by taking Waheguru’s Name. Therefore those who
take Waheguru’s Name are my brothers and friends. Whenever Waheguru’s Naam is taken is
an auspicious moment for me. The enjoyment that I get by recitation of Naam is far more than
what the people get by eating delicious food. For me Naam itself is all kinds of rituals and all
kinds of immaculate trades. Waheguru’s Naam is the best support of all and great are those in
whose mind Waheguru’s Naam has made its abode. O Nanak! we should always sing
Waheguru’s praises from the bottom of our heart. One can achieve this state of mind only when
Waheguru-Akalpurakh grants the company of saintly people and blesses the gift of Naam
through them.
