publications ; hence he had given up the above plan.
After completing rny introductory study concerning the contacts
between the exponents of the Andalusian-Muslim and the Aquitanian poetic
art about n o o A. D., and seeing The Dove's Neck-ring through the press in
France, I could begin with the preliminary work on the 5^3 in August 1931,
when my good friend William Marcais kindly placed his private library at
my disposal for that purpose, shortly before my fourth journey in the
Troubadour territory via Montauban, Toulouse, Lourdes, Pau, Bayonne,
Saint-Jean Pied-de-Port, Roncesvalles, Pamplona, Tudela, Zaragoza, Huesca,
Barbastro, Le*rida, Barcelona, Perpignan, Narbonne, Montpellier.
Then, with but seven months left in which to complete the work, it was
necessary to adopt an efficient and consistent method. On the peaceful and
hospitable campus of the American University of Beirut a splendid and
beautifully located monument of the late Dr. Daniel Bliss I found, (in
November 1931), a good collaborator in Mr. Ibrahim Tuqan, then a
teacher of Omayyad and Abbasid poetry in the Department of Arabic.
A talented poet himself and an enthusiastic student of the Jl^Vl ^ ^ " ,
Abti Tammsim's JLyLl , of i$Ji*J\ , v*\f y\, and especially his favorite
*-^VI Oi u*L*H , he could, as we were going over the text, quickly identify
from memory many of the anonymous poems and suggest, for corrupt
passages, ingenious emendations which were later either embodied in the
text or in the Notes. During this ilU, I became aware of the rather
disconnected nature of many of the poetic selections ; in checking them
over I found that Ibn Dawoud had frequently taken considerable liberties
with the longer poems from which he took the verses. Often he would
put together verses very far apart and entirely disconnected as to meaning,
thus creating meanings of his own ; at times he would change the wording.
The chief importance of the book seemed to consist in its being an
anthology of verses on one definite subject, (namely, love), culled from
preceding and contemporary poets, about 890 A. D., a connecting link
between the i ^ U u^bS^of Al y\ , that of <sSv*J\ and the <jU.\!l w-t^= ;
and as such, of great value not only to specialists in old Arabic poetry, but
to students of literary history in general ; also, to a certain extent, of Muslim
mysticism. Rather than a translation, therefore, the publication of the text

as a basis for further elucidation and improvement by those interested,
seemed to be the first logical step to take. This opinion was shared by my
friend Sprengling ; he submitted it to the Director of the Oriental Institute,
Dr* James H. Breasted, who generously agreed to make a special grant
toward the defraying of the cost of printing at the Catholic Press of Beirut.
A translation may follow later ol li <jl in a second volume.
The basis of the Cairo manuscript was a AJUI isLJ which was copied
b y a i ] ^ for a master, and then collated with him, according to the
somewhat ambiguous notation on the last page. The work was completed
in SJuiJI j i 718 = between December 25, 1318 and January 24, 1319. It was
begun probably four months prior to this date (beginning of October 1318)
with no signs of hurry or impatience until about fol, 74 ; until then, it is
very sparsely vocalized, to be sure, and shows little understanding or interest,
but there are no indications of disgust. It seems, however, that the fast of
uU^j between October 27 and November 26, 1318, made the copyist quite
apathetic, careless and even malicious. It would also appear that he at times
wrote very fast under dictation and had no time or energy to add diacritical
points. All these evidences have been briefly recorded in the Notes. When
the copying was finished, the master and the iljbr proceded to collate the
copy with the original which probably contained already not a few errors
and lacunae. How this iLU* was carried on can be deduced from the notes
ili (on f. 2 5i iliUM *li) at the bottom of the pages of the MS. During the
first session 15 pages were covered ; then 20 pages three times (p. 35, S5,
75) ; then 16 pages (up to p. 91) ; then 20 pages twelve times (p. i n ,
131, I 5 I , 171, 191, 211, 231, 251, 271, 291, 311,331); another session for the
remainder ; altogether 18 sessions. It is probable that the master was
reading and the iijlr was watching the copy ; otherwise, the many obvious
errors and several malicious remarks could not have escaped the master's
attention. At times, however, the JLC would call attention to an omission,
and then the master would make a correction on the margin. In chapters 14,
16, 18, 20, 23, it would seem that certain omissions were not corrected,
because the number of verses falls considerably under the stipulated one
hundred ; this, of course, may have been the fault of the original copy.
One of the subsequent owners of the MS (from among those whose
oi.uchicago.edu

names appear on the title page) undertook a careful study of the poems on
pp* 7-9 (cf Notes), but soon gave up the good intention. Judging by the
handwriting it may have been the same who had immortalized himself on
the title page thus :
( ? ) J&A 0\A j i u -ob j c AJI j*ii)l juJI OJA\J\ SJ*J\ OIA dLk wlir J
As to the correct reading of the title there has been some divergence
of opinion. C Barbier de Meynard in his edition and translation of the
w * J J I p j ^ VIII 255, (Paris 1874), speaks of <r Touvrage connu sous le
titre de Zohrah (Kitab-Enobrab). Brockelmann in his Gescbicbte der arab.

Kapiteln This interpretation was followed by Massignon in Al-Halldj 1170,
Livre de la planete Vnus, j> though in n. 1 he mentions the possibility of
reading al Zahrab ; but in his Recueil he adopts aX Zobrab definitely.
The first mention of the book known to me in European literature is in
Pascual de Gayangos' Tbe History of tbe Mobammedan Dynasties in Spain,
based on AUMaqqari, (London 1840), I 185, quoting Ibn Hazm's J, HL.j

* difference, that the work of the latter contains only
one hundred chapters with one hundred verses each, while that of the
former has two hundred chapters with the same number of verses in each :
there is still another circumstance which makes the work of jj* j \ the
most valuable of the two, which is that there are not two chapters in his
book bearing the same title, a thing which is of frequent occurrence in that
of Abu Mohammed. Massignon (/. c. I 171 n. 1) refers to the Codera-
Ribera ed. of ^1^11 (Bibl Arabko-Hisp. Ill No. 331) :

This means to say that the Andalusian did not repeat any of Ibn
Ddwoud's titles of chapters. In view of this, Ibn Hazm must have known
the Sj*J\ ^UT'quite well, and in the Notes I have indicated many of the
passages which show similarity with the ideas expressed in the j ^ ; not

give a fairly intelligible interpretation. The general method adopted was to
preserve the original text tel quel as much as possible, even where a more
radical treatment would have been needed. Space does not permit to discuss
in detail Ibn Dawoud*s method of selection of verses which he explains in
the final paragraph, together with his failure to make the number of verses
exactly one hundred in each case. Fuller details will be found in the Notes.
He is perfectly right when he says that the verses of the *->^l *Uij are distin-
guished by extreme conciseness and compactness of expression, their purpose
being to comprise many meanings in very few words : this obliged him to
quote, under many headings, verses which strictly speaking would not belong
to the chapter ; otherwise, he would have been compelled not only to
separate whole verses, but even to split them into hemistichs, thus exposing
himself to ridicule. What he means by making a compensation for the five
(really six) verses in the introductory chapter, is not clear to me. Our
table of contents gives opposite the page number also the actual
number of verses in each chapter (usually less than ioo, not more, as stated
in my translation of the ^J CVI) : total 4928. The translations of the
titles of chapters 10, 13, 28, 30, 42, 4S, 48, have also to be modified, as well
as parts of the long passage quoted from the i*Ai* iJLj, v, 20. [10. Suspicion
comes from great jealousy. 13, He who is kept (hidden) away from his
friends, will humiliate himself to those who hide them (door guards).
28. He who does not join the (departing) caravan, will weep over the
vestiges (of dwellings). 30, He who cannot leave the place (where he is,
away from the loved ones), will be stirred up (in his nostalgia) by the
winds. 42. The thinning of the body is a proof of suffering. 45. He whose
love is spontaneous, will not be warned by blame. 48. Cf Notes.]
The principal value of S^AJ\ consists, as was said before, in its being a
well-chosen collection of excellent verses on one subject, arranged in
tastefully and cleverly named chapters ; truly, a pretty bouquet of flowers
offered to a friend. Ibn Dawoftd evidently had a special predilection for this
kind of systematizations, as attested by Haji Khalfa IV 47 (Fluegel) :
~7 "
AUBuhturi's, much less interesting and often sajl despite its fame, has 174
chapters greatly varying in length ; in neither case is there a commentary
by the author, Ibn Da wotid, then not much over twenty years of age, must
have been Al-Buhturi's friend (cf TA1, W O , but nevertheless criticizes him
rather severely ( H i ) , as he does many others, often with a very caustic wit:

But he also praises them enthusiastically : t f ^ t J ! (Tlo) < i.J) j i (rjo)

offer good material for the study of his character. His great mentor on
literary matters was<>5teJI ^ U i ^1 JL-UI^J t*-l [cf Irsbdd (Margoliouth)

predecessor, namely, Ibn Qutayba. Many of the verses of ^ ^ J\J cited in
the text are not found elsewhere ; this applies also to some of the verses of

In conclusion I wish to thank the veteran master of old Arabic poetry,
Rev. P. A. Salhdn i, youthful in spirit despite his 84 years of age, who has
kindly read the sheets after they had been printed : the more important of
his corrections and suggestions were marked (S.) in the Notes ; thanks
are also due to the Catholic Press for their efficiency.

The following remarks came to my notice during my brief sojourn and
work in Jerusalem, at the Hebrew University (Goldziher) Library ; in Cairo,
at the i^^ll w^Ol jta ; and in Istanbul, where Dr. Hellmut Ritter kindly
