EdTPA Lesson Plan #2 Elementary Math Sharlet Mullen 12160144

Instructor: Subject Area: Math - Topic 9 Lesson 2 & 3 Grade: Date:

Sharlet Mullen Subtraction Two-Digit Numbers/ Second-Grade 1/31/2017
Strategies to Subtract Two and One-digit Numbers
Information about the Lesson
Context/Rationale:
There is more than one algorithm (a step by step process to do calculations) when subtracting two-digit
numbers. Subtracting whole numbers is based on the relationship of whole numbers and place-value.
Using prior connections, models, kinesthetic, strategies, practice, justification and addition students will
gain a solid understanding of the algorithm for subtraction.
Prerequisites:
Students have a well-developed comfort with basic addition and subtraction facts. Students understand
place-value and regrouping with addition.
Materials Needed:
Teacher:
Problem of the day (one per student)
Hot Dog Regrouping Math Anchor Chart 2.1
Subtraction Poem - Anchor Chart 2.2
4 Bs Anchor Chart 2.3
Strategy page (3 on a page one-third per student) 2.4
Station instructions 2.5
Math magazine 9-2 & - 9-3 (one each per student) 2.6 & 2.7
Technology:
Doc camera projected onto smartboard
Computer for small groups with the following videos
Steve and Andy how to borrow Pizza video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugmE47qWofc
Subtraction fun song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JS397L9YfM
Everyday Student supplies:
Pencil box (pencil, glue, crayons, markers)
White board and marker.
Math folders, playing cards, and math notebook
Lesson Content and Design
Central Focus / Big Idea:
By breaking standard subtraction problems into simpler calculation, each student can interpret the
process of always starting with the ones and moving to the tens. Looking ahead students understanding
will help with money, estimating, problem solving and finding missing parts.
Objective(s):
Students will use standard algorithm to subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number with or
without regrouping.
Students will reproduce subtraction chats to support subtracting a one digit number from a two-digit
number.
Guiding Question(s):
How do you know when to regroup when subtracting?
When subtracting a one-digit number from a two-digit number calculations always start where?
What song or poem helps to determine when to regroup with subtraction?
Assessment:
formative Thumbs up, thumbs down checks for retention of step by step process of subtraction with
regrouping. If majority of students are thumbs down adjust and use small group lesson as whole group
lesson. Giving students more tools to determine when to regroup with subtraction. Choral Exit ticket;
before leaving small group activity each student will verbally tell the teacher the most helpful song, or
poem to help determine when to regroup with subtraction.
summative assessment of student work on the math magazine will be graded for mastery. The teacher is
looking for 90% accuracy to show the students are ready for subtracting two-digit from two-digits and the
regrouping process.
Language Development:
Students are learning to interpret the multiple strategies and representations about subtracting and
regrouping. Students are beginning to justify how the strategies help compute mathematical problems.
Students can envision that regroup means to reorganize the numbers from one column to another. The

use of discussion and small groups help students interpret and describe their knowledge of the
subtraction algorithm.

MN Content Standard(s):
2.1.2.1 - 2. Second Grade. 1.Numbers and Operations 2. Whole Number: Operations 1. Use strategies to
generate addition and subtraction facts including making tens, fact families, doubles plus or minus one,
counting on, counting back, and the commutative and associative properties. Use the relationship
between addition and subtraction to generate basic facts.

How to Play: Players split a deck of cards and simultaneously flip over their top
three cards to create a 3-digit number. Players may move the cards and place
in any position of the number they wish. Player 1: number is 431 Player 2:
number is 874 The highest number wins all six cards. * Note that you can
increase the number of cards to flip if you are working on larger numbers.

Station 2 - Math magazine 9-2 and 9-3

Not doing the front - Complete both Guided Practice and Independent
Practice on your own. Reminder regroup if you need to. If you want a
challenge add 10 or 20 to the bottom number (be sure to write it in)
Complete the Do you Understand? on both magazines.
Complete the Problem solving.

Station 3 Back Table with teacher Songs, poems & strategy helpers
(Bring Math notebook)
Learn fun songs and poems to help us remember when to regroup. Students
are learning that to regroup means to reorganize the numbers from one column
to another. The process of regrouping helps us perform addition and
subtraction. It is always nice to learn many ways to solve a problem and then
find the one that works for you.

Ask: Is there a difference between the terms regroup and borrow? I will notice
_____ has a quiet raised hand. No, they mean then same in math.

What does regroup in math mean? (Wait Time) To reorganize the numbers from
one column to another. This process helps us to perform addition and
subtraction.

Who can tell me what they remember about when you need to regroup with
subtraction? Start with the ones, if the number on the bottom is bigger better
borrow or hot theory.
The 4 Bs Bigger, Bottom, Better Borrow. (Bigger number on the Bottom
Better Borrow.
Bottom number of people at the party, top number hot dogs, do you have
enough?

As we learn these Glue copy of anchor charts into math notebook

Watch video: The first video is about regrouping using a strategy similar to the
hot dog and people strategy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugmE47qWofc
Students repeat: It asks if you need 9 slices of pizza and the pizza man only
has 7 does he have enough? No, he needs to borrow from the local pizza shop

Differentiation
Planned Support /Extension/ Differentiation for Specific Students:
Speech/Hearing Language Impaired - Use voice amplification system during whole group and transitions
to give students with hearing impairment the best opportunity to hear all the instruction. Use of small
group instruction allows students the best opportunities to understand a concept. Special consideration
for seating to allow students optimal view/hearing of added support of visuals. Repeat directions, model,
and use established routines allowing students to anticipate learning opportunities with success. Visuals
on the smartboard help students see what is being talked about.

ADHD/Learning disabled/IEPs Focus prompts, redirection, check for understanding, special seating
arrangement help the students be successful. Behavior interventions are in place, including planned
ignoring and take a break. Verbalizing the expectations and reviewing the expectation of activities help the
students learning be meaningful and successful. Projecting a visual on the smartboard and the use of
probing questions keeps students mind stay busy and focused. Wobble chairs help to keep students
focused and on task burning energy as they are learning. Writing skills are difficult so formative
assessment or discussion are used to verbalize problem solving.

Health impairments Established understand when students use the sign language visual for bathroom
from across the room they may leave as needed.

Gifted and Talented - Offer enrichment activities, extensions or opportunities to explain their processing.
Problem of the day activates the deeper thinking strategies and students must explain their process.
Opportunities for strategy games keeps the mind busy and active. Changing the numbers on curriculum
math magazine to larger numbers helps to challenge students beyond the lesson of the day. When
finished early students, create problems on the back of worksheets or play strategy games.
