Voluntary recall by Michelin
Australia
M ichelin Australia has decided
to launch a voluntary recall
of 1900 truck tyres in Australia as a
precautionary measure.
The tyre this relates to is the Michelin
brand 305/70 R22.5 XZE2+ TL 152/148L
with an identification number on the
sidewall of DOT HA 3M BJC X, followed
by the number 4508 to 1510 (relating
to the week and year the tyre was
produced).
These tyres were all manufactured at
Michelin’s truck tyre factory in Spain
between November 2008 and April
2010. They were sold in Australia from
December 2008 to May 2010.
Michelin rigorously scrutinises the
performance of its tyres according to
the running in each country. Recent
damages to some fleets in Australia
have led Michelin to believe that the
level of crown endurance of this tyre
no longer complied with the required
internal standards set by Michelin.
While there have been no injuries
reported, the decision to recall the
tyres was made to ensure customer
satisfaction and the safety of end-users
in Australia.
Although the tyres are suitable for
use in many other global markets, in
Australian conditions they can present
a risk of reduced crown endurance
which may lead to a rapid loss of air
pressure.
Michelin has launched an exchange
program where these tyres will be
replaced with an alternate product
from the Michelin tyre range that
meets the requirements for Australia.
It is hoped that this exchange program
will be completed by the end of
October 2010.
Michelin recommends that users of
these tyres contact an authorised
dealer of their choice to have their tyres
replaced free of charge. ■

Robert will be based in Melbourne and

Daimler increases US production
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is
the only US truck manufacturer currently
able to increase its production capacity.
The company plans to produce 67 percent
more heavy-duty Class 8 trucks in July
2010 than were manufactured in the
same month last year.
“Since the beginning of the year, DTNA
has received more than 21,400 orders for
trucks and school buses equipped with
BlueTec emissions technology, including
16,565 orders for Freightliner trucks.
DTNA has been an industry pacesetter
for EPA 2010 readiness and performance
and leads the industry in EPA10-certified
Class 8 truck sales without the use of
credits.
Because of the strong order situation,
DTNA has recalled approximately 540
workers at its Mt Holly and Cleveland
truck manufacturing plants and at the
Gastonia Components and Logistics Plant,
all located in North Carolina.
Between January and April 2010, DTNA
had a 34.2 per cent market share of the
Class 8 segment in the US and Canada,
which means orders in this segment
represent more than one-third of the
industry backlog. The Class 8 year-to-date
market share is nearly eight percentage
points ahead of the closest competitor.
“Our current market share of Class 8
trucks clearly shows that our customers
appreciate our trucks’ fuel efficiency,
reliability, and driving comfort. In
addition, our customers can count on
being served by the best dealership
network in the industry,” Martin Daum,
President and CEO of DTNA. “We’re proud
to be the only manufacturer of heavy-
duty trucks in North America who is
boosting production at the moment.”
The recent increase in sales figures
results from two major orders placed
by the by US transportation companies
Western Express of Nashville, Tennessee,
and Schneider National of Green Bay,
Wisconsin. Western Express ordered
900 Freightliner Cascadia trucks, while
Schneider National ordered several
hundred Cascadia trucks which will
give both companies a predominantly
Freightliner vehicle fleet. Western Express
and Schneider National are both longtime
customers of DTNA.
The Freightliner Cascadia trucks from the
two new major orders are equipped with
engines from Detroit Diesel Corporation.
The engines from the New Engine
Generation combine the know-how
of Daimler Trucks units in Europe, the
US, and Japan, which have been jointly
developing the engines since 2002 to
achieve superb fuel efficiency and meet
the respective emissions limits. The
engines are manufactured in Redford,
Michigan. ■
