corresponding subtraction facts.

Activity This activity serves as an interactive tool for 1st graders to learn whole
number operations, primarily through subtraction (in this plan). This
lesson from the Smart Exchange will allow students to interact with
the picture problem it presents (A shark eating other fish).

1) The teacher demonstrates how the board works prior to the
students using it (emphasize sensitivity of the board, show
how much pressure the board needs to work).
2) Students will take turns going to the board. They will solve
the problems on each slide by sliding the fish to the shark.
3) With the teacher, they will read out the word problem and
together as a class, they will find the answer.

If needed, the teacher can alter the questions in the lesson to fit the
lesson. For example, the questions can be changed to How many fish
does the shark see? or How many fish and pieces of seaweed are
there? This lesson is very flexible with making changes to
accommodate for any other math SOLs, one such as:
1.17 The student will recognize, describe, extend, and create a wide
variety of growing and repeating patterns. (What color pattern does
the shark see with the fish?)
