Lesson Plan Integrating Technology & Pedagogy Directions and Outline
Bailey Caruso April 24, 2017
Standards:
NYS/NGSS- MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple
molecules and extended structures. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on developing models
of molecules that vary in complexity. Examples of simple molecules could include ammonia and
methanol. Examples of extended structures could include sodium chloride or diamonds.
Examples of particulate-level models could include drawings, 3D ball and stick structures, or
computer representations showing different substances with different types of atoms.]
[Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include valence electrons and bonding energy,
discussing the individual ions composing complex structures, or a complete depiction of all
individual atoms in a complex molecule or extended structure.]
ISTE- 1-a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
2-d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned
with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
Lesson Objectives: When the period begins, I will tell students to log into a computer and go to
my website. From there, I will direct them to the second link on the list titled General
Chemistry Interactive Simulations. From there, they will locate Chapter 8- Determining
Molecular Shapes 1. The students will work through the simulation for approximately 15-20
minutes to review what was learned in the classroom the day before. Once the simulation is
completed, the students will be guided back to my website to click on the first link which is the
molecular model builder. I will pass out the computer lab and go over the instructions. They will
have to make each molecule listed and record what data is needed. This is not a group
assignment. The students can clarify questions with each other if I am helping someone else but
the lab needs to be completed on their own. They will have the remainder of the period to work
on this with whatever they do not accomplish becoming homework.
Provide Practice:
A) Students will be given 15-20 minutes to work through the simulation while I walk around
and answer any questions that arise and help students that need additional support. After
the simulation is completed, I will hand out the lab and go over the expectations and
procedure for the lab. The students will have the remainder of the period to work on this
and what is not completed will be given for homework.
B) Each student will be working on their own on a computer in the lab. They are to work
individually on the simulation and the lab. They can ask each other questions if I am
helping another student, but the work needs to be completed on an individual level.
Method of Assessment:
A) The students will be turning in their labs the day after it is done in class. This will be a
simple write or wrong correction to give students immediate feedback on how they did on
the lesson and to see if they need to improve on this topic before the chapter test.
