for Collaborating, written by Farhad Manjoo, is a critical review of the investigation happening
at Harvard College. The cheating scandal was unprecedented: many students who took the
course named Introduction to Congress last spring were under suspicion of plagiarism in the
final exam. Even though students were able use books, notes, and internet during taking the test,
they were not allowed to cooperate with peers. Minjoo argues that what students did was
collaboration rather than cheating; therefore, what fundamentally matters in the case is
not rational to ban cooperating with peers while online collaboration is allowed during the exam.
There are only a few reasons for universities to consider that collaboration is a discomfort.
development of significant skills which are closely related to teamwork, such as creativity and
problem solving. Allowing collaboration results in a positive outcome, considering the success of
students critical abilities and intelligence beyond mere memorizing. In order to do that, he
insists students would perform better when placing them in an environment to think together,
Minjoo further argues that the tests design was inappropriate. The test questions and the
attitude of instructor and teaching fellows confuse students. The questions were unclear.
Accordingly, students had to ask someone to clarify their intention. It is unreasonable to prohibit
from discussing with others while allowing students to get help from the teaching fellows about
the exam and to use resources from the Internet. Minjoo questions whether internet use should be
labeled as cheating.
Minjoo concludes what students did is collaboration rather than cheating. He bemoans
universities discomfort with collaboration which has labeled it as a crime although collaboration
should be recognized. Minjoo discloses their inappropriate way of treating the students by
highlighting the significance of collaboration and by criticizing the vaguely designed test and an
ambiguous attitude of instructor and teaching fellows. He further demonstrates that collaboration
is the important virtue to have outside of school. Moreover, in order to truly assess students
abilities, collaboration should be allowed so that students can develop more critical thoughts by
