Part 2: Unit Topic/Rationale

Standard 6

The Unit that I will teach my French 3 students is DAccord Unit 5 A&B lavenir et les mtiers

(The future and professions). Students will learn a variety of rich vocabulary related to the office

and professions, acquire interview terms and expressions, and they will write a cover letter and a

resume. Im pleased about the timing of this unit because during their weekly Advisory classes,

11 of my 16 students (sophomores) have been writing resumes in English, so learning how to

write one in French and comparing the layout and structural differences between the two cultures

will be interesting.

Along with the new vocabulary (for both the students and myself!), I will be introducing new

grammatical structures including Si clauses with the conditional, relative pronouns and Quand

Futur Futur. All of these are explained in my lesson plans. Learning this new grammar will help

students talk about their future professions and hypothetical situations with si clauses the

conditional and quand futur futur. I am nervous to be taking over the teaching of such complex

grammar, but at least this class has a strong base in how to form the future simple so I am

confident they will be able to quickly understand the formation of the conditional mood.

I believe that this unit is important for the students because they are preparing to go out into the

world and join the work force. Learning how to write a CV and a cover letter even if they are

in French, will reinforce their knowledge of these structures and help them recognize the

qualities and information that they should highlight when they apply for a job. Students will be

communicating in French both orally and in writing during this unit and they will participate in

exchanges (interpersonal mode) with classmates with the new vocabulary and grammar. I believe

it is important for students in my class to be able to comprehend exchanges in French, so we will

listen to job interviews in French (interpretive mode) and they will participate in partner and

group conversations as they practice the new vocabulary about jobs. The more they hear and

speak French, the more comfortable they will be when they go to a francophone country and

communicate with others. Students will get to design and share a poster (presentational mode)

using the new vocabulary to show their future job and throughout the entire unit, we will be

examining the practices and perspectives within the French culture as we look at CVs and cover

letters and compare them with our own. Im eager to see if the students, while relating

information from these authentic resources, can identify which CV or cover letter format

(Advisory resume and business class resume vs. French CV for example) is more logical. I

wonder what they will think when they see that French CVs include a photo! Another wondering

I have is will students be able to relate to writing a CV do some of them already have jobs? My

goal is to practice writing about themselves and their strengths and interests to prepare them for

their future professions.
