Course Description
Biology is the study of life, so this course will focus on how we define what is
living. We begin by looking at the simplest organisms and how they function,
and proceed to see how they evolved into the complex plants and animals we
see today. Topics will include: evolution, genetics, cell biology, classification of
species, plant and animal systems, and ecology. By gaining an understanding
of not only how our own bodies function to keep us alive, but also how similar
that is to what keeps everything else alive, will give you a deeper
understanding of just how precious all living things are, and what roles we all
play in our own health, and the health of the flora and fauna around us.
Grading
Grades will be based on your performance on exams, quizzes, laboratory
exercises, student projects, in-class work, and participation

Exams 30%
Quizzes 10%
Labs 20%
Projects 25%
In-class work 10%
Participation 5%

Office Hours available by appointment.
4. Homework Policy
Homework for this class will be to keep current on assigned reading, to work
on your student projects, and occasionally to finish in-class assignments that

we were unable to complete during class time. However, if I feel you are not
doing the reading, I may begin assigning questions that will be due at the
start of each class period, and/or begin giving pop-quizzes.
Absent/Missed Classwork
All handouts and worksheets will be filed in the filing cabinet at the front of
class, under the period and date it was handed out. It is the students
responsibility to pick-up the missing work. Two days will be given to complete
each days assignments missed.
Missed Labs
Lab work cannot be made up, so you must rely on your lab partners to catch
you up, and help complete your lab assignments.
5. Exams/Quiz Policy
Each nine-week session will include three quizzes and two exams, with the
last exam of each semester being cumulative. Those dates are listed in the
course calendar. All students are required to take the test on the dates listed,
unless they have an excused absence, or have made prior arrangements with
me.
Make-up Quizzes/Exams
Only students with an excused absence will be able to make up a quiz or an
exam. Students will have two days to take complete the make-up after their
return to class.
Students will be unable to make up pop-quizzes.
6. Honesty
Plagiarism and cheating are unacceptable in this classroom, and the
consequences of such actions will be severe. All work must be your own, or
be cited. Students caught behaving in a dishonorable manner will be referred
to the vice-principal, have their parents or guardian notified, and will receive
an F for the assignment. (pg. 31 of the Student Handbook).
7. Paper Collection
All work to be graded must be turned in by the end of the period it is due.
Papers should be placed into the inbox on the teachers desk, unless I ask you
to turn in the project electronically, at which point, work should be uploaded
to the class website before the designated time.
Teachers make mistakes, so it behooves you to retain all the graded work you
get back, so that if an error is made in my gradebook, you can show me how I
messed up. I may also give opportunities to resubmit past assignments, for a
better grade.
8. Parent Contact
I plan to be in constant communication with your parents or guardians
throughout the school year. I will contact them several times throughout the
year to keep them updated on your progress. Your parents are my best
resource for understanding how best to help you learn, and I hope to make
good use of that resource.
(See attached for parent letter)
9. School Policies
Cell phones, I-PODS, MP3 players, and any electronic device should be turned
off and
secured prior to entering a classroom. (pg. 22 Student Handbook)
Jeffrey Lingard Classroom Management Plan 10/25/2016

Hoods, hats, headbands, coats, jackets, sunglasses, gloves, backpacks must

not be worn during school day after entering the building. Leave them in your
locker. (pg. 22 Student Handbook)

Bullying
Bullying, or harassment of any kind, will not be tolerated at school at any
time, for any reason. A substantiated charge against a non-employee shall
subject such person to disciplinary
action including but not limited being banned from coming on or about school
property,
activities, or events, the filing of restraining orders or law enforcement
notification. (pg. 52 Student Handbook)
