The Rabbis Introduction
Rabbi Noah Cheses
Major league baseball recently
announced that they will be
eliminating the manual intentional
walk. Instead of having the pitcher
throw four obvious balls, hitters will
now be granted the walk through a
signal from the opposing teams
dugout. While the commissioner of
Major League baseball has justified
the move as part of an effort to try and speed up
games, many are concerned about the change.
Traditionalists argue that the four pitch intentional
walk has become a time honored part of the game.
Statisticians contend that intentional walks have,
based on data from the 2016 season, only added, on
average, 35 seconds per game. Comedians posture
that deciding on the new signal is going to be too
contentious.

I glean two insights from this recent announcement.

The first is that baseballlike most other sports
serves as a mirror of our changing society. In our
modern age, we have an increasing inability to wait
for things. We expect what we want, when we want it.
Technological advances have changed the way that
we operate as human beings. Even baseball, a game
that by design is meant to be slow and relaxing, is
succumbing, by lessoning the dead time in a game,
to the societal pressures of the day.

As Torah Jews, we protest against such trends every

Shabbat, as we slow our lives down, push technology
aside and embrace the present moment. We
prioritize the relationships in our liveswith each
other and with our Creatoras we participate in a
counter-cultural enterprise. Now, more than ever, we
need to strengthen our resolve to resist caving to the
societal pressures of the day.

The second insight is about the reaction to the

announcement. Change, as the saying goes, is hard. It
is difficult because it entails letting go of something
familiar and comfortable. Change is also inevitable; it
is built into the mechanics of creation itself. As
traditional Jews, we often seek change that is
somewhat continuous with what came before.
Orthodoxy doesnt take leaps. It evolves slowly
according to a relatively fixed set of principles and
internal mechanisms.

Even Avraham, the iconoclast who rebelled against

idolatry and championed ethical monotheism,
continued in some ways, along the path that his father
had begun. Before the command of Lech Lecha is
received by Avraham, the Torah already tells us that
Terach was on his way to Eretz Canaan, the land of
Israel. There was something brewing and Avraham
seems, at least according to the pshat, to take over
where his father left off.

During my first few months as your new Rabbi, I have

often felt the paradox of changethat it is both hard
and necessary. I have been able to work through this
discomfort by viewing my role as part of a chain, as
picking up where my esteemed predecessor left off.
Rabbi Sendor shepherded our special community for
several decades and my gratitude toward him and the
work that he did here only increases as I deepen my
understanding of what he built here. I am humbled to
try and continue his work and at the same time
embrace the inevitable changes that will become part
of my service to our community as its need develop.
The honorees of the shul dinner this yearMichelle,
David and Shlomowere largely responsible for
successfully managing the necessary and challenging
change that took place in our community over the last
18 months. Their unique ability to listen to the
community and reflect its values at every stage of the
search made for an exemplary process and yielded
pretty good results, if I may say so. I am indebted to
their thoughtfulness, thoroughness and visionary
leadership.

I hope and pray that, in partnership with our

outstanding leadershippresident and board
included, I will be part of positive change that
advances our relationship with Hashem and that
brings our community closer to our ideals and
aspirations.

With excitement for what lies ahead,

Rabbi Noah Cheses
A Message from the President
Roy Strunin
What a Long Strange Trip It's Been!!

It is hard for me to believe that our

rabbi search process started over two
years ago when Michael Delman,
David Katz and I first reached out to
Michelle Avigan, Rabbi Saltzman, and
Shlomo Lerner. At that point our
notion of the project ahead of us was vague at best.
We knew our beloved Rabbi Sendor was retiring and
that we wanted to have a new rabbi in place for the
summer of 2016. Other than that starting point and
that finish line, we did not have a map of the course
ahead of us; the challenges we would face; how we
would do it; or even a clear understanding of where
our community would be when we finished. Yet,
despite an appreciable fear for how overwhelming this
task would be Michelle, David and Shlomo agreed
lead the effort. They agreed each with smiles.
Whats more impressive is that they were still smiling
at the end of the process.

During the nearly two years of the search process our

entire community did so much work to bring us to
where we are tonight. It was a colossal effort. In
addition to Michelle, David and Shlomo I thank every
person who gave of their time and consideration
throughout the process, through a dozen committees,
hundreds of meetings and uncountable hours of work.

In doing this we have seen some of the best our shul

has to offer. We have learned about ourselves as
shul and as a community. And we are a better
community for that. We have seen a ground-swell of
volunteerism from across all ages and social
groups. I hope that the examples of volunteerism,
ahavat Torah and ahavat Yisrael demonstrated by
Michelle, David and Shlomo will continue to inspire each
of us. And that the renewed spirit of community and
volunteerism will continue.

The successful rabbi search project led by Michelle,

David and Shlomo brought not only Rabbi Cheses to our
shul but also a new sense of growth and energy. As we
welcome Rabbi Cheses and enter the next phase of the
growth at the Young Israel of Sharon we realize that this
Long Strange Trip is not over. We are simply turning to
the next page.

Roy Strunin
2017 Annual Dinner Honoree
Dr. Michelle Avigan

Michelle Avigan grew up in Buffalo, NY in a home that

placed a great value on community service. Her
parents, Elaine and Mickey Reiman, took active roles
in their local synagogue and jewish day school.
Michelle watched her parents regularly chair
fundraisers and take board positions so it was natural
for her to volunteer for SHAS and Young Israel soon
after she arrived in Sharon in July 1996.

Michelle met David in 1985 when they were students

at Barnard and Columbia. They lived in New Haven
CT and Riverdale NY before deciding that Sharon MA
was the perfect place to raise their family.

Within a year of moving to town, Michelle volunteered

to co-chair the Young Israel annual fundraiser and
became a member of the Striar Hebrew Academy
Board. She served as a SHAS board member for
several years and then as President for two years
before taking a break to concentrate on building her
psychology practice and spending time with her family.
In 2013, Michelle took another volunteer position at
SHAS, chairing the Head of School Support

and Evaluation Committee for two years and

subsequently joining the board for another two years. In
2014, she was asked, along with Shlomo Lerner and
David Saltzman, to co-chair the Rabbi Search
Committee.

Grateful for the support of the entire community in the

18 month long process, Michelle wishes to thank
everyone who made the search such a success. She is
particularly thankful to her children Zach, Jason and
Noah and to her husband David not just for his
patience during the search, but for 30+ years of love,
support and wise council.
2017 Annual Dinner Honoree
Dr. Shlomo Lerner

When Shlomo moved to Sharon in 1991 he

immediately made an impact in our community.
Shlomo could be called on to lead davening or lein
with little to no notice. Shlomo's volunteering started
by joining the Striar Hebrew Academy Board and then
serving as president of the school for 2 years.
Shlomo's impact can be felt in the greater Boston
community as well. In 1997 Shlomo began
volunteering on the Maimonides school committee,
and has been an active board member since 2007. In
2002 Shlomo took on the responsibility of gabbai in the
shul. Since then, he has been assigning each week's
leaning. After 15 years of service, we see no end in
sight. During and after davening Shlomo can be found
learning quietly with a coy smile and excitedly sharing
the insights of the sefer's author with all those around.

Shlomo is following the example set by his parents

Henry and Bella, who have been a mainstay in the
Edison community for over 50 years. They have each
have held multiple positions in their local schools and
Shuls while Shlomo and his siblings were growing up.

Shlomo and his roommate Sharon are always willing to

do whatever is needed in the community with a smile
and a plate of warm cookies. They have set an example
for their children Dov, Meira, Shmuel, Dalya, Benji and
Dani.

When the board asked Shlomo to co-chair the search

committee with Michelle and David he thought it about it
for a short moment and said "sure". He worked
tirelessly with David and Michelle to create and manage
the selection process for our shul. All the hard work and
focus on the details allowed us to find our wonderful
Rabbi.
2017 Annual Dinner Honoree
Rabbi David Saltzman

David grew up in Chicago and

attended Skokie Yeshiva and
then Ida Crown Jewish
Academy for high school. After
two years in Kerem BYavneh in
Israel, David attended Yeshiva
University where he is still
officially enrolled as a Doctoral
student (and is planning to finish
by the end of 2017). In 1995
David and Jodi were married in
NY and have four wonderful
children: Atara, Moshe, Talya,
and Yoni (and Junior the dog).

After living in NY for 12 years,

the Saltzman family moved to
Sharon in 2007. Immediately,
they joined (and currently
house) the Arboro minyan and
the Young Israel. In addition to
regular weekday and Shabbat
minyan attendance, saying a devar Torah at hashkama,
delivering the derasha when Rabbi Sendor was away,
or organizing Kinot for Tisha BAv, most of Davids
involvement in the Young Israel was accompanying
Jodi to shul events that she organized and following her
directions. Whether it was schlepping tables, hanging
up decorations, carrying boxes, setting up A/V
equipment, moving chocolate fountains, shopping at
Costco, checking in food or cleaning up, it was all done
with a smile (and very little arguing).
Then in July 2015 David received the call to partner with
Shlomo and Michelle and lead the Transition
Committee.

David was honored by this appointment and enjoyed

working with Michelle, Shlomo, the committees and all
the members who volunteered their time, energy and
efforts towards the search. By working for the shul in
this capacity he developed a newfound appreciation for
all the selfless volunteerism that is necessary for a shul
to function. With that realization, David continues to give
some of his time and energy to help advance the shul
and its members spiritually and religiously. David serves
on the Rabbi Advisory Committee, he helps organize
T.N.T, middle school seudat shlisheet, and he gives a
shiur after HaShkama.

And one last thing - GO CUBS!

Nevertheless, your ability to dedicate
