Instructions: Determine a Common Core sample task for a particular grade level and student using
the following resources. Then answer the questions pertaining to the performance task you chose.

Description of Student with Reading/Writing Challenges: David, the student completing this performance

task, is an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with high functioning autism. He is educated in a general education 5th

grade classroom for the majority of the day with resource room services a few times per week for extra

supports for ELA and math. He reads at a 5th grade reading level and is able to comprehend what he has

reads well. For writing, he has difficulty forming sentences, spelling, and with handwriting.

Question Response

What is the discrepancy between the student and This student would be able to understand the reading but
the task? would be unable to complete the writing tasks as it is
assigned. He would have a difficult time with explaining
why he has an opinion and to synthesize what from the
text could be used to support his opinion.

What types of differentiation might be needed? Differentiation would be needed for this task for the student
to be successful. Differentiation occurs in groups in the
classroom. A graphic organizer can be used while he
reads as guided notes. He would be able to use this as a
resource for his writing.

What might an intensive personalized instruction Intensive personalized instruction for this student would
plan look like for this student? focus on:
Writing a summary of a text: This task would work
on the specific skills of including all the important
and necessary information and to work on
presenting the information in a logical sequence
within the written summary.

Sentence formation: This skill would increase


Davids ability to construct sentences that convey
the ideas that David wants to convey.
Identifying the main idea in a text and details from
the text to support the main idea: This skill is
connected to the skill of writing a summary of a
text. In order to compose a good summary, David
needs to be able to identify the main idea and then
the how to present the details from the text to
support the main idea. David needs to learn how to
form an opinion argument as well. He needs to
pick an opinion on
Improving handwriting and spelling: Improving
Davids abilities in these areas will make the writing
process more fluent for David. He writes slowly
and sometimes has difficulty reading his own
writing. David will have access to a computer to
type his assignments as well.
