friend, says Julian of his return to New Zealand.
His new show, Position Vacant, can truly claim to
be a different experience every night because he
relies so much on audience participation.
Its my search for a husband. Each show I go
into the audience and select ten men I like the
look of and heard them into a sheep pen with

rounds, and in the end of the performance
I marry the winner. In a rather touching

never get bored because I dont know what

I love Hannah Gadsby, Tom Ballard and one or two
that I cant name because theyre not out yet!

brings us Broadway hit Other
Desert Cities, the latest play
from brothers and sisters creator
Jon Robin Baitz. Fresh out of
rehearsal, Erin Fae caught up
with Hera Dunleavy to discuss the
upcoming show in which she is
playing the part of Brooke Wyeth.
If people saw August: Osage
County and liked that, Other Desert
Cities is definitely in that vain: a
family drama, American-style set
at Christmas, Hera explains. Its
just really well written. Theres a
fantastic part played by Elizabeth
Hawthorne, [shes] an ex-junkie
who gets all the best lines! Its just a
fantastic mix of drama and family
and its so nice that you can sit
back and enjoy someone elses
dysfunctional family at a distance.
The play follows the story of
Brooke Wyeth who after a six-year
absence, comes to celebrate the
festive season with her Republican
parents, her apolitical TV exec
brother and her liberal screenwriter
alcoholic aunt. They discover
Brooke has written a memoir.
Other Desert Cities was a finalist for
the 2012 Pulitzer Prize. Auckland
Theatre Companys production will
be a little different from the American
renditions, Hera tells us, but refuses
to give too much away. She tells us
its a must see for express readers
because, its got fantastic actors in
it. Youve got Sarah Peirse, who is just
pure class, in my book. She does a lot
of work in Australia and were very
lucky to have her back. And as I said
Elizabeth Hawthorne who plays her
sister. Its magnificent to see those
two on stage together.

is an institution in the US that
has influenced gay culture the
world over. express caught up
with Palm Springs organizer Jeff
Sanker to find out more about the
circuit party that tops all others.

Buffed, bronzed, speedo clad

and dressed only in white, party-
goers will pile into the Palm Springs
Renaissance Hotel for The largest
gay dance festival in the world.
Jeffs original inspiration for the
party is almost comical, the event
originally started as a weekend
getaway event for a lot of my LA
friends. He told express without the
slightest hint of awareness of how
OTT his lavish lifestyle is.

Every year the party got bigger,

attracting increasing numbers of
international guests. Similar parties in
the US and indeed the world began
to appear, often on dates selected
so party-goers could travel from one
on to the next; and the gay circuit
party scene was born.

I think imitation is the sincerest
form of flattery, he tells us. Now
there are White Party-styled events
not only in a few other states here
in the US, but around the world in
36 countries. All the gay cruises
also have some type of White Party
themed event.
Jeffs success was even being
honoured last month with him
being inducted into the Palm
Springs Walk of Stars where he
joined the likes of Leberace, Bob
Hope and numerous former US
Presidents. He admits the parties
have come a long way from an
era where sexual preference was
not talked about. Many had to
attend secretly for fear of losing
their jobs if someone found out
- especially members of the US
Military. Now they are able to
attend freely and openly.
Over the years the parties have
secured impressive line-ups of

Boy George and Ke$ha. Jeff admits

I Now Pronounce You More Equal
Why Vaughan Meneses
doesnt put a ring on it.
Now anyone can get married
and the queer marriage is no less
valid than the other kind, and that
is kinda cool. But to my mind only
kinda.
You see, I have no intention of
getting married, as I am perfectly
happy in my civil union. Its just
that now I have to defend my
relationship choice to those who
think I should automatically want to
upgrade to a marriage. It must be
even worse for those choosing not
to legally formalise their relationship
in any way. I mean, now that we
can get married, why wouldnt we
want to? After all everyone wants
the same thing, right?
Marriage, of course, has its roots in
property rights and the ownership
and control of women. For some
that is still a sad truth. Luckily for us it
has evolved a little into something
more civilized; in our part of the
world anyway. No longer is a
marriage synonymous with the ball
and chain of possession, like slavery.
Today it is seen as a reasonable
way of defining a civil connection
betwe two people,
between

another lecture encouraging me
to have my relationship validated
by marriage, I may just have to
do the Wellington walk and step
out on Manners Street directly into
the path of a big yellow bus. My
relationship is awesome just as it is,
thank you. Stop telling me it needs
an upgrade. Stop asking me why
I dont want to be married? My
mum was married; four times. Aint
nobody got time for that!
You see, I never actually felt
particularly less equal when I
couldnt get married. I crossed that
bridge in 1993 with the passing of
the Human Rights Amendment
Act. I do hasten to add, however,
that I think the recent ability to
allow marriage between any two
consenting adults is a good step; its
just that I dont feel we should feel
obligated to race towards it as if it is
the holy grail of relationships. It isnt.
Isnt the point of equality and
freedom though, just that? Equality
and freedom.
Im happy with civil union, I know
plenty of others who are happy
living in sin and I know plenty
more who are happy flying solo.
My fear however is that like the
characters in Animal Farm we may
be in the throes of a quiet revolution
within our community where all
relationships are equal, but some
are more equal than others. I
eschew marriage not because I
dont love my partner, but because
civil union gave us an opportunity
to define a relationship on our own
terms; it did not come tarnished
with the history of marriage through
the ages. I like being part of the
new generation where the old rules
dont apply and the institution is
modern, fresh and unencumbered.
I celebrate relationships in all of their
forms and the people who enter
them have their own reasons for
defining them in the way that feels
right for them. I dont want to end
up with hierarchy of relationships
in our community, where some are
perceived to be more valid than
others and I dont want to throw
stones at anyones glass house.
So as we celebrate the ability to
marry, lets not lose our freedom
to choose other configurations.
Many fought hard and long for the
moment where the last bastions
of disenfranchisement fell to the
ground, but their struggle had never
been for sameness; it was for equity.
Lets not become the kind of
people we once fought against.
Lets make sure that in our
communities we fight to keep the
barriers down forever and not
create hierarchies of straw that we
will one day need to pull down. Let
equal be equal, everywhere and
for all. Marriage is not the pinnacle
of relationships; it is merely another
expression of one; no less valid,
beautiful, meaningful or more
important than any other.

Three fabulous reasons that Rob Sykes and Vinnue MacBride-Stewart tied the knot.
To mark the anniversary of parliament passing
the marriage equality bill express brings you
our most lavish wedding feature ever.
It was apparent when they met that Rob
(pictured in maroon) and Vinnie (in grey)
had a fair bit in common. Both the youngest
children from deeply religious families
(Vinnies catholic, Robs Mormon), both
worked in the corporate world, both were
the same age.
But when Vinnie first opened his NZdating
messages to see a simple, Cute pic bro, from
Rob who would have known that eight years
on they would be happily married husbands.
He was one of the few people I met who
had credit to text me back, jokes Vinnie,
who admits, Though neither of us were
looking for anything serious, we were seriously
dating within about a week. When you least
expect things, wonderful things happen.
When they met for the first time on the
second of January, Rob was impressed that
when talking about his children (a son and
a daughter, now respectively aged 12 and
14), Vinnie wasnt scared off. I learnt to trust
others with my babies as Vinnie became a
part of their life, Rob tells us.
Sadly being a parent in a same-sex
relationship is still not easy, Rob describes an
incident where his son was bullied because
of his two dads as, heartbreaking. All we

want is for them to feel that our modern
family is normal and that they are loved. He
says, assuring us that his son, came through
it strong, and is a beautiful young man.
With the motivations of building a secure
family structure, and being head-over-heels
in love, Vinnie maxed out his credit cards
to buy a diamond ring, took Rob for fish
and chips on the beach at Mission Bay and
proposed. Shaking with nerves, I asked Rob
if he would spend the rest of his life with me.
Vinnie remembers. It took him an hour or so
to stop crying after he had said yes!
Ten months of planning and thousands of
dollars later, the two were Civil-Unionised
with a 95-guest ceremony in the same spot
on the beach that Vinnie had proposed,
followed by a reception at the Ponsonbys
Old Fire Station on Williamson Avenue.
As Louisa Walls Marriage Equality bill made it
into parliament, Rob and Vinnie put forward
passionate submissions including a deeply
personal oral submission, where Vinnie spoke
of some of the horrendous scars inequality
had given members of our community.
When the bill passed Rob decided it was his
turn to propose six years after the first proposal
and chose the lucky second (the same date
they met, proposed and civilly unionised on)
as the day to do it. Recruiting Robs best friend
Tania to assist, he got her to call Vinnie to say
her car had broken down at Mission Bay and
she needed his help.

When I got there I could not see
Tania. I kept on ringing... She kept
on hanging up on me, Vinnie
explains. I looked over at the
beach, and saw Rob. We were in
tears; he got down on one knee
and proposed. Tania was hiding in
the bushes taking photos.
Three months later Rob began to
experience long-lasting headaches.
Eventually an acoustic MRI
uncovered a foreign mass in the
right hand side of his brain, which
specialists diagnosed as a tumour.
Despite being devastated by
the news, the couple affirmed to
remain as positive, focusing on the
fact: the tumour had been found
early, was slow growing and was
located in a part of the brain that is
least used.
Rob tells us,I dont underestimate
the seriousness of it. It is not curable.
They will operate to get as much
of it out as possible.Through the
ordeal he describes Vinnie as his
rock. He even had to tell our
babies. I couldnt do it myself. He
says solemnly. He has helped me
to feel loved, protected and safe.
[But] I know its been tough on him.
This is one of the many things that
has come into our lives that is a
challenge to overcome. Every time
we face something like this our love
grows stronger, and we become
even closer this tumour simply
makes us realise how much we
need and love each other.
The ceremony, once again on
Mission Bay beach, was made
up of just 12: the grooms, their
best friends, their children and
parents. As with their Civil Union,
it was overseen by celebrant
Penny Ashton, who they had met
through mutual friends. [She]
pulled together a heartfelt, honest,
witty and love filled ceremony that
shared the love we have for each
other and for our babies, and the
respect we have for our parents
who were right there at our sides
regardless of religious belief.
The reception that followed saw the
boys enter to Jason Te Mete singing
John Legends So High, followed by
performances from drag queens
Buckwheat and Tess Tickle to the
200 guests. Vinnie presented Rob
with the Korowai (feather cloak)
that his nieces and nephews
had lovingly made without his
knowledge to show how much
Mana (strength) he has.
Vinnie sums up their relationship with
the monologue that concluded the
final episode of Sex & The City. After
it was read out at their Civil Union,
Vinnie had it translated in to Maori,
to join it to Robs heritage, and
had it tattooed on his chest. He says
the tattoo took six hours and hurt
like hell. Now that is true love!

a screening of Priscilla Queen of the Desert,
followed with performances from inked-up

included a Mystery Bus Trip, which toured
some of Christchurchs most popular pubs and
bars. The closing party attracted 250 guests
and featured drag shows from Joanne Neilson,

A Moving Display
In 30, his second exhibition as Film Archive
Curator-at-Large, Gareth Watkins reflects on
the history of HIV AIDS in New Zealand.
The first death of a person in New Zealand with
an AIDS related illness was in 1984 when a young
man returned from overseas to his home in New
Plymouth. In 1986 a paper was published in the
New Zealand Medical Journal that described
the first 11 patients with AIDS to be treated at
Auckland Hospital. Over half died within 13
months of diagnosis. All were homosexual males,
aged between 28 and 43.
The exhibitions title not only marks the 30th
anniversary of the first death in New Zealand,
but it also highlights the age group that many of
these gay men were in, when they passed away.
I didnt come out until the early 1990s and so
this exhibition helps me understand some of our
shared history, says Watkins. Shared in that
when I was going through high school, AIDS and
homosexuality were [though to be] intertwined.

There was a joke, What does gay stand for?
Got AIDS Yet. Thats how many people saw it.
It was one of my parents biggest fears of my
coming out Re-enforced in school when the
only mention of homosexuality was in health
classes where we learnt about STIs and AIDS.
The exhibition is made up of seven screens;
each randomly displaying themed sequences:
remembrance, media coverage, artistic responses,
stigma, self-esteem, treatment, prevention and
individuals and communities affected.
I thought it was particularly important to have
a sequence relating to self-esteem; as this is
still a factor in risk-taking behaviours. A sense of
worthlessness and isolation are feelings shared
by many marginalised people. The Hero Festival,
established by Rex Halliday in the early 1990s,
began to tackle these issues within rainbow
communities.
It was also important to highlight the stigma
surrounding HIV AIDS and how that continues to
have a negative effect on the day-to-day lives
of many people.
In addition to the achieval footage, the New
Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt has generously

Wellington, with a screening of 30 significant HIV
AIDS moments from the Film Archive collection,
followed by a reception. 30 will be exhibited until
Saturday 14 June.

The Toast of Queenstown
The Public Kitchen and Bar in
Queenstown is arguably the most
beautiful location for a restaurant
in New Zealand.
Located on Steamer Wharf, the
Public is a cool, casual and trendy
spot highlighted by its outdoor
section, with its incredible views of
the Remarkables.
The menu is extensive and offers
some unusual selections. We started
with lamb koftas ($24) which were
suitably moist and delicious. The cod
croquettes were hot and slightly
gooey ($15) and Martys hand-made
sausage and lentil sauce ($16) was
rich and satisfying.
For dessert we loved the massive
serving of trifle ($14) with limoncello

The wine and beverage list is
extensive and the pricing is
surprisingly moderate. Our server
Lucy was terrific. In a city where
service can be hit or miss. She had
a great energy and seemed to
