THE question of employability
among fresh graduates is much
discussed. Are they ready? Do they
have the skills to meet market
demands? Do they know what is
expected of them?
The main gripe of employers is
that these young jobseekers
significantly lack work experience.
They argue that fresh graduates
lack knowledge of what is required
to be a successful interviewee, let
alone an employee.
Employers encourage young job
seekers to invest in skills training
to make them more employable
and valuable to the company.
More than that, employers are
frustrated with the overall attitude
of fresh graduates.
A JobStreet survey placed
graduate attitude as the third
contributing factor to fresh
graduate unemployment.
This included being too choosy
about the job or company at 60%,
followed by poor communication
skills and demonstrating poor
character during the interview.
On the other hand, fresh
graduates find themselves in the
employment Catch-22 they need
relevant work experience to
qualify for a job, but how do they
gain that experience prior to
getting the job?
Venessa Jane, a local medical
graduate looking to be employed
outside the field of medicine,
cannot stress this enough.
Not having work experience
just means I need work all the
more. I am hoping to try at my
university where they all know me,
so perhaps that would increase
my chances of gaining some much
needed experience, she says.
Venessa goes on to say that when
she first enrolled, her seniors
warned her about this problem
that lay ahead. According to them,
the greater the professional skills
required for a particular field, the
harder it is for a fresh graduate to
be hired.
This is because these occupations
involve demanding day-to-day
tasks or extremely challenging
work environments that many
young 21st century job seekers
may not be able to handle.
One possible way to continually
improve your skills is through
working while studying. More

The work and study route was
first made popular among
individuals in the unskilled
workforce. Educational institutions
providing postgraduate
programmes or even bachelors
degree programmes were scarce in
the 1980s and 1990s.
According to Human Resources
Development Fund (HRDF), skilled
workers make up only 28% of the
workforce in Malaysia. More than
70% of the 13,300,027 people in the
workforce today are considered
unskilled.
HRDF is trying to increase the
number to 35% by 2020 by
capitalising on the work and study
route.
With the traction it has gained,
working and studying has become
popular among young jobseekers
as many opt to work first and
further their studies later.
There are a few ways to go
about pursuing further studies
while you work. There is part-time
study where classes are usually
held during the weekdays after
working hours or throughout
the day on weekends.
A more contemporary approach
is blended learning, where classes
are minimal or even optional
depending on the institution.
Some programmes of blended
learning have only a few classes
per semester.
Learners are also given a host
of learning materials such as PDF
notes, videos, i-lectures and
i-tutorials to facilitate independent
learning.
A fully online mode of learning
offers no classes and learners study
the entire course on their own
using the study materials given.
A sizeable number of young job
holders in the Malaysian workforce
has chosen to study while they
work.
For them, it is a different ball
game altogether compared to their
slightly older counterparts who
have spouses, children and other
commitments to attend to as they
work and study.
Gaining experience
Darsyne Kumar, who recently
enrolled in a masters course
in integrated marketing
communication in Malaysia, found
herself dropping out when the
quality of the course did not meet
her expectations.
I work in a fast-paced media
environment. To elevate my
employability to international
standards, I decided to pursue a
masters programme to be exposed
to newer theories, digital age
strategies and real-life
international scenarios, she says.
Instead, I felt that most of my
coursemates and even a few
faculty members were not
interested in running the race with
me. It was as though we just
needed to do what was enough to
pass the course and have our name
printed on a piece of paper. This is
not enough for me.
Moreover, the English
proficiency was not up to
international standards and,
worse, nobody knew what was
happening outside Malaysia.
Darsynes experience is
commonplace. According to an
article published by Eurasia Review
in January this year, many
Malaysian universities are
beginning to lose sight of the vision
of education institutions, investing
unnecessary amounts of effort and
time in glorifying events and
ceremonies, thus making a
mockery of academia.
When universities fail to act as
facilitators for individuals to excel,
many young jobseekers or holders
will find themselves helpless at
work or during the job-seeking
process.
Another challenge is maintaining
a social life. Josh George, a
marketing manager by day and
second-year law student by night,
says he has not given up his social
life completely.
It is not on my list of priorities
as my life has to be centred on
classes and personal studying.
However, to achieve a healthy
work-study balance, downtime is
necessary. This can come in many
forms a nap, music, movies or
having a social life.
Meeting your needs
Before going down the route of
working and studying, thoroughly
ensure the educational institution
of your choice is fully on board
with helping its students out with
this conundrum.
Conduct a thorough research on
the course or faculty of choice. It
should be able to offer significant
internship programmes (industrial
training) or proper job placement
procedures that are attached to the
courses.
If you already have a job, see if
there are any additional skills or
certification offered with the
course you are undertaking. Speak
to faculty members before making
a decision and not just the frontline
staff.
For Abigail Pavitra, she found
work opportunities at the
educational institution she
graduated from.
She kicked off her career there
after completing her advanced
diploma.
During her course, Abigail
became involved in extracurricular
activities and handled many
students and even staff projects in
her capacity as a senior Student
Council member.
This required her to frequently
deal with the staff and her
lecturers, exposing her to the work
environment as well as enabling
her to hone her work ethics and
increase her employability.

to be made for upskilling, whether
this is through the initiative of
employers or employees
themselves.

workplaces, making you
