Functional Behavioral Assessment: Determining the Intervention Procedure

Method 1: Teach the Replacement Behavior
Method 2: Improvement Environment

Method 3: Adjust the Contingencies

Method 1 & 2: Teach the Replacement Behavior and Improve the Environment

Antecedent Adjustments *Sara will complete homework in an area of the house that is free of
other distractions.
*A timer will be set for 30 minutes so that Sara can self-monitor
completion of her writing homework in less than 30 minutes.
*Prior to starting homework time, Saras mother will ask Sara how her
day was and if there is anything that she wants to talk about.

Reinforcement *If Sara completes her writing homework in less than 30 minutes, she
can choose to engage in a preferred activity that evening from a list of
available choices. Choices include: watching a TV show, playing on
the computer for 30 minutes, playing a game with a parent, or extra
time playing outside (30 minutes).

Extinction *For attention: Planned ignoring will be used if Sara attempts to

engage in conversation with her mom or other family member during
writing homework.
*For escape: the homework assignment will not be removed until it is
completed. Sara needs to complete the assignment prior to engaging
in any other activity.

Data to be Collected
Target Behavior: Off-task behavior measured with partial interval recording.

Replacement Behavior: Task completion of writing homework within 30 minutes measured by

event recording.

Treatment Integrity: Measured each time intervention is implemented using treatment integrity
checklist.

Social Validity: Measured pre- and post-intervention implementation using the adapted versions
of the Intervention Rating Profile and the Childrens Intervention Rating Profile.

Fading and Generalization: Generalization of the intervention to other family members will be
implemented; the intervention will be faded once Sara is engaging in the behavior in 90% of
opportunities over the course of 2 weeks with both her mother and father. Fading will occur by
increasing the requirement for receiving reinforcement (i.e., achieving criterion 2 days in a row).
