1B. Georgia Standard: MGSE1.OA.8

Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating to three
whole numbers.

2. Learning Goal: First grade students will be able to determine the unknown whole number that
makes the addition or subtraction equation true. For example: (8 + ? = 11), (8 = ? + 3), and
(6 + 6 = ?).

3. Objectives: Given 10 addition and subtraction equations, the first-grade student will be able to
determine the unknown whole number.

4. Description of Learning Activities: Students will join the Unknown Number lesson through
BlendSpace with Access Code dvvx

Introduction
The lesson will begin with students watching the eSPark Missing Number video.
Afterwards, each student will receive 20 plastic bingo chips for assistance through guided
instruction.

Guided Instruction
The teacher will help the students connect the +, -, and = symbols and the relationship to addition
and subtraction equations.
The teacher will guide the discussion about how to solve word problems using different
strategies. The class will work through the word problem on slide 3.

Questions the teacher will ask:

What do you know?
Do you need to add or subtract?
Work out the equation.
What is the answer?
How can we use addition/subtraction to find the difference?
How is the problem like the first?
How is it different?
Is the missing number the same?

Question 1: There are 9 oranges are in the basket. 4 are red and the rest are green. How many
oranges are green?
What do you know? There are 9 oranges total, 4 are red and the others are green.
Do you need to add or subtract? Subtract
Work out the equation.
The teacher will instruct the class to count out 9 bingo chips to represent the 9 oranges.
The class will subtract 4 bingo chips to represent the red oranges and will count out
whats left.

5 green oranges 4 red oranges

What is the answer? 9 4 = 5 green oranges.

How can we use addition to find the difference? 4 + ? = 9
How is the problem like the first? The numbers, 4 and 9, are the same
How is it different? One is subtraction, the other is addition
Is the missing number the same? Yes

Teaching strategies
The teacher should make sure that the class understands that the missing number may be found
using different methods, and encourage them to use the relationship between addition and
subtraction to find the missing numbers.

The students will watch the Missing addends video.

The students will answer the questions on slide 5 using the part-part-whole model.

Questions the teacher will ask:

Fill in the part-part-whole model with what you know.
How many are in the whole/total group?
What are the 2 parts of the group?
Will the problem be solved using addition or subtraction?
Work out the equation. What is the answer?
How can we use addition/subtraction to find the difference?

Question 1: There is a total of 9 balls. Justice has 7 balls. How many balls does David have?
Fill in the part-part-whole model with what you know. As the students answer, the teacher will
fill in the part-part-whole model in Blendspace as illustrated below.
9
7 ?
How many are in the whole/total group? 9 balls
What are the 2 parts of the group? 7 balls and an unknown number of balls.
Will the problem be solved using addition or subtraction? Subtraction
Work out the equation. 9- 7 = ? What is the answer? 9 7 = 2
The teacher will instruct the class to count out 9 bingo chips to represent the 9 balls in the
whole group.
The class will subtract 7 balls to find the unknown part.

Justices 7 balls Davids 2 balls

How can we use addition/subtraction to find the difference? 7 + ? = 9

Application/Independent Practice
After the class works through the questions on slide 5, the students will find and write down their
username and password on slide 6.

Students will enter the username and password in slide 7, sign in, and complete learning games
D.3 and H.5.

The learning games align with the MGSE1.OA.8 standards for determining the unknown number
in an addition or subtraction equation relating to three whole numbers.
The teacher will monitor the students in the real-time center of IXL and walk around the class
providing one-on-one assistance to students.

Closure: The teacher will recap what was covered in the lesson and ask if anyone has any
questions? After all questions, if any, the students will complete the addition and subtraction
unknown number quiz on slides 8 and 9.
Use Webbs DOK to identify level of cognitive rigor for the objective:
DOK Level 1: Recall & Reproduction
The lesson involves basic tasks that require students to recall knowledge and skills recently
discussed. The subject matter content includes students working with facts and calculations and
applying simple procedures and formulas to get the answer. The teacher provided examples and
demonstrated how to find the answer.

Explain how the activity(s) is differentiated and how you varied the level of cognitive
demand:
All students, especially those that are below proficiency, benefited from the part-part-whole
model because it refers to how numbers can be split into parts. It allowed the students to see the
relationship between a number and its component parts. As a result, students generalized the
connections between addition and subtraction. For additional support during the independent
practice, if a student responded to an answer incorrectly, IXL provides step by step instructions
to solve the problem.

For enrichment during the independent practice, students can complete additional questions in
the Challenge Zone where they can continue practicing to earn gold metals. The students could
also continue to play Minus Misson or Alien Addition which is a fast-paced learning game.

Identify the chosen technology(s) and describe how it enhances the learning activity.
The digital resources, (pictures, videos, websites, and Google docs) that were collected and
uploaded into Blendspace made my lesson more engaging and interactive for my students. The
access code allows students to view the lesson virtually anywhere. The quizzes can be used to
evaluate, measure, and document the learning progress, or educational needs of my students. The
quizzes provide me with instant feedback so I can adjust my instructional approach or teaching
material if need be. Students can participate in active discussions but can also go through the
lesson at their own pace.
