Reflective Summary

Over the course of eight (8) months, the portfolio sought to highlight my personal views of

myself as a teacher, my opinions with respect to the teaching profession, and new materials

learnt from the Diploma in Education program. The biggest and most important highlights,

however, were how these new materials, knowledge, and skills were able to positively impact

my views and practice; and how they all helped me to grow not only as a teacher, but also as a

person.

During the course of the program, we were required to compile personal entries, reflective

journals based on new strategies and knowledge learnt from pedagogy, and key aspects of

assessment and technology in teaching. At first, compiling a portfolio appeared as a tedious task.

However, now that it is complete, this process has been most beneficial to me. It is a testament of

all of my accomplishments during the program; and showcases how the Diploma in Education

has equipped me with the necessary tools to continue my growth as a teacher.

My approach to the teaching process has been changed from my conventional methods pre-

Dip. Ed.; as I now understand that all students do not learn in the same manner. It is in fact the

teachers responsibility to not only deliver a lesson, but rather plan and execute it in such a

manner that all students achieve the desired learning outcomes. The various teaching strategies

such as differentiated instruction, scaffolding, and the teaching models, all provide a variety of

options in which a lesson can be executed effectively. In addition, guidance on proper

assessment strategies and integration of technology also filled the gaps in these two key areas

that were previously vaguely understood.

Some of the most critical aspects of the Diploma in Education program were the individual

teaching practices, field visits, and microteaching sessions. These sessions were informative as

our lectures highlighted ways in which teaching can be improved to enhance learning outcomes.

The opportunity to observe and positively critique other teachers also provided us with the

opportunity to suggest effective strategies to overcome problems in the classroom; and then

assess how these can be applied to our own classes. These were all effective in improving my

planning of units and lessons, and executing these in the classroom in a manner that meets the

needs of all students. These are all skills I will continue to utilize and improve upon in order to

provide the best learning environment for my students.

The foundation courses also provided some of the greatest benefits in improving me as a

teacher. Before I entered into the program, I had a fair understanding that the role of the teacher

exceeded beyond the classroom; and that greater understanding of the students was required.

However, I was unable to move beyond what I knew due to lack of resources and proper

knowledge. These courses provided me with the additional, relevant, and critical information in

understanding the nature of children through psychology, philosophy and sociology. By being

able to understand students from various perspectives, it also assisted in informing my approach

as a teacher in the classroom; and the type of teacher-student relationship I needed to establish.

My philosophy of education, the role of the teacher, and my expectations of students has

therefore progressed from my pre-diploma experiences and opinions. The Diploma in Education

program, though at times overwhelming, truly did improve my skills; and positively influence

me to strive to always be a better teacher to my students. All the knowledge gained, skills learnt,

and resources obtained will definitely continue to be part of my teaching practice. I have also

been motivated to continue researching new and effective teaching approaches and strategies;

and continue to improve my training and development in the field of education.

One of the most valuable experiences I will take away from this Diploma in Education

program is the relationships formed amongst the members of my group. The fellow teachers

were all fun to work with, but also very supportive to each other in times of need. Field visits and

pedagogy classes were always interesting and exciting, and there was never a dull moment

amongst these radiant individuals. Our supervisor in particular, Dr. Kalloo, was our strong and

informative leader; who was not only supportive and encouraging, but also knowledgeable with

the keen ability to provide innovative solutions to problems we may have experienced. Not only

did she play the role of supervisor, but more so colleague, friend, and mother-figure. Her advice

on teaching was invaluable; and her advice on approaching and interacting with students left a

lasting impression. She truly understood the importance of understanding the child first. All of

these contributions left a lasting impression; motivating me to be not only a better teacher, but a

better person, and a better mother.

I truly appreciate all that was learnt, and all the relationships made, during the Diploma in

Education program. These experiences will continue to be with me throughout my teaching

career; and I do intend to continue to share all the valuable information gained with others. This

program has been quite an informative one; and it is with heartfelt gratitude that I can sincerely

say that I appreciate all efforts of the staff of the School of Education in making me a better

teacher, person, and mother.
