subgrade is the native material underneath a constructed road,
pavement or railway track. It is also called formation level. The
term can also refer to imported material that has been used to
build an embankment.
> Subbase course
The subgrade and subbase course is no different to a foundation
for a building. Subbase course is the layer of gravel on top of the
subgrade. The thick this layer is, the more load the slab can
support.
> Base course
The base or the base course is the layer of material on top of the
subbase and directly under the slab
> Surface course
