My entire life has been devoted to progressive activism - in the Peace Corps,
Teacher Corps, as an inner-city teacher, as director of a migrant farmworker
program, as director of a youth community involvement program, as an
environmental activist, and as town board member and town supervisor.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

2008 2016 Town Supervisor of the Town of Ithaca; served as both chief
elected official and administrator for a town of 20,000 population with a
budget of $20+ million; previously served four years as a Town Board
member. Served as Treasurer of 5-municipality Bolton Point Water system
and the 3-municipality Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Facility.

2004 2008 Senior Extension Associate in the Department of Human


Development archiving and writing the 35-year history of the Cornell
Migrant Program (The Cornell Migrant Program: A Study of Power and
Politics in Academe). Continued the Farmworker Course which I co-
founded and supported several student groups assisting farmworkers.
Archived the history of the state-wide Youth Community Involvement
program.

2000-2004 Continued as Director of the Cornell Migrant Program and leader


of statewide youth development program in Cornell Cooperative Extension
as described below. Created a traveling museum exhibit, Coming Up On
the Season: Migrant Farmworkers in the Northeast, which was displayed
in eight museums in four states. Successfully competed for over $20 million
in governmental and foundation grants.

1996-2000 Department Extension Leader in Human Development in the


College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. Facilitated the work of
faculty with Extension responsibilities with Extension Administration and
county staff throughout New York State. Served as director of the Cornell
Migrant Program, supervising three offices, six senior/extension associates
and numerous support and grant-funded staff. Managed a total budget of
over $1 million per year, a large majority of which was in outside grants.
Conducted statewide programs for youth at risk, especially youth
community service; facilitated migrant interagency collaboration; promoted
migrant parental empowerment and leadership; improved migrant health
and living conditions; and encouraged improved public policy regarding
migrant farmworkers.

1988-1996 Senior Extension Associate and Director of the Cornell Migrant


Program.
Provided statewide support for Extension youth programs
in local government, citizenship, public policy and the Teen Assessment
Program. Served as president of the New York State Migrant Education
Program Consortium and played a key role in redesigning the NYS
Migrant Education Program.

1983-1988 Department Extension Leader (see 1996, above) and Director of


the Cornell Migrant Program. Continued efforts begun in 1977-1983.

1979-1983 Senior Extension Associate and Director of the Cornell Migrant


Program. Redesigned and expanded the Cornell Migrant Program, hired
new staff, and initiated new directions in migrant health, education and
labor.

1977-1979 Extension Associate responsible for developing statewide programs


to better involve youth in their communities through 4-H Community
Development. Emphasized experiential education and service-learning
activities. Administered a small grants fund to encourage development of
local programs and edited a department newsletter. Member of the
Community Development Society of America and the NYS Association of
Cooperative Extension 4-H Agents.

1972-1977 Project Director of the regional Special Migrant Project of


Cooperative Extension. Developed and supervised programs primarily for
migrant and other low income youth in the areas of day care, outdoor
education, recreation education, youth community development, nutrition,
pesticide education, and health. Supervised a staff of 50 mostly seasonal
employees and wrote several successful grant applications to private and
public sources.
