Executive Summary:
This tender has been written by Axle Corp (Sim Hant Shen) in response to the Athena
company for their Mars Rover design for the International Space Exploration Consortium. The
purpose of having this tender evaluation is to show that the understanding of Athena companys
design of the Mars Rover and the construction method of the car model to suit Athena companys
needs and expectation which will be beneficial for both companies.
Among the main reasons why this tender must be considered favourably is that Athena
companys Tender Evaluation Criteria(TEC) have been accurately addressed. Designers from
Athena require the contracting company has staff achieving Grade A or above for their Physics in
any education level. Axle Corp have provided evidence that they did achieve Grade A or above
for their physics by photocopy their results which fulfil their requirement which achieving A or
above in their pre-university.
In addition, Athena company need assurance from Axle Corps contractor to prove they have
a superior knowledge about all the functions, purposes as well as the correct way of handling all
the tools used during the construction period. Axle Corp had a meeting with Athena company
and explained all the functions, purposes, and the way of handling it precisely to the designers in
Athena company by convincing the company we have more than enough knowledge to finish the
task given without any incidents happen.
In addition, Axle Corp built an amazing paper tower with much effort to make sure the quality
of the tower is perfect during the first EFPC tutorial class. This task satisfies Athena companys
tender evaluation criteria (TEC) which require Axle corp to prove their work by attaching the
photo of the paper tower built was fully stable and with creative design.
Axle Corp believes the quality of their staff, professionalism of the team will be strictly taken
care of to assure the Mars Rover project assigned will be in the finest quality and will be
delivered within the promised time-frame.

1.0 Introduction
This document contains Axle Corp tender submission for the construction of the Mars
Rover for the International Space Exploration Consortium. This document has been written in
response to the criteria as specified by the Athena Company in their design package 4.0 (page44~
page50), developed on behalf of the Mars Rover.
A design review has been drawn and provided by Athena Company to ensure Axle Corp
has a clear and complete understanding of the project procedures and expectation.
Based on Athena Companys design of their Mars Rover, their idea of adding the wings at
the side of their model is to increase the air resistance of the model during the free fall to allow it
to glide to reduce the impact between the ground the model. The pyramid shape on the front end
of the model is design to reduce the air resistance the allow the model to accelerate faster when
its travelling down the 2 meters slope to gain more energy to glide.
The material for construction as listed in their material list are mainly cardboard, in another
word their model will be light-weight so there will not have a great force transfer to the model to
cause damage to it. This fact can be explained by using Newton's second law of motion which is
(force = mass x acceleration) which the mass is reduced which cause the force to be reduced at
the same time. At the same time, the use of cardboard can also reduce the material cost and also
reuse from recycle item can greatly help the environment.

2.2 Client Brief Compliance
The Client brief calls for a design to survive the free fall of 1 meter high after sliding down
a 2 meters slope with 30 degrees and have to land on at least 2 wheels and also surviving the
drop which the model have to look perfect from at least 1 meter away to considered as surviving
the drop. The design must be able to fit a 600ml bottle filled with water and the weight of the
bottle will take into count for the drop. Table 2.1.1 indeed provide the right amount of space to fit
the bottle in the design.
This brief will allow the 600ml bottle to fit in and some modification will be done to the
body to ensure the stability of the model as the model wouldnt overturn and land on its back
instead of land on 2 or all 4 wheels.
The second concern is that the wing in section 2.5.2.0 wings. As mentioned in table 2.2
material list, dimension of cardboard 14 will only be 10mm x 5mm but in the building
specification mentioned, a length 276mm and width 100mm will be cut out from cardboard 14
which does not match the data given. At the same time, the individual wing design and overall
back design shows that the thickness of the wing is 9mm but the overall front design of the wing
showing only 6mm. We are concerned about whats the correct measurement of the wings. In
specification 2.5.2.1 Preparation of cardboard for wings mentioned about cardboard 15, 16,
and 17 but all the cardboard cant be found in table 2.2 material list. Is there some information
missing out in there which will cause miscalculation of the cost used for this project. In
specification 2.5.2.2 Preparation of plastic, the dimension of the plastic needed is not specified
as everyone judge slightly bigger differently.
Page | 5
After that, as shown in design 1.8.0 vehicle top view the small piece of cardboard at the
head of the body is listed as 7mm but in the material list cardboard 12 and cardboard 13 is listed
in table 2.2 material list as 10mm x 10mm that would be used in 2.5.1.3 construction of body
which cause confusion to contractor about the right measurement. Both the material and the
design must be the same to cause less confusion.
In specification part 2.5.3.2 Wheels as mentioned a 85mm diameter bottle will be cut with
the width of 30mm to be the outer part of the rim and inside the wheels will be filled with
polystyrene. Its unnecessary to add the bottle as the outer part of the wheels but instead we
could just fix the polystyrene directly as the wheels to save cost and have a better grip between
the wheels and the 2 meters wooden plank. At the same time, the thickness of the polystyrene
was not specified in the material list as its extremely important because wheels are the only
support to the weight of the whole model.
In addition, 2.5.3.1 Axle can be improved by adding sponge into the straw where a metal
skewer will be slot in later. The purpose of adding sponge into it is to increase the time of impact
to decrease the force between the metal skewer to the body directly which will avoid the body to
be damage to the model.
On the other hand, the constructive line and the measurement line in Figure 2.0:
Cardboard 1 and Cardboard 2 have the same thickness which will cause confusion to
contractor who trying to understand the model design. It can be improved by increase the
thickness of the constructive line which will outline the shape of the body and allow the
contractor have easier time understand the design.
Furthermore, the bottom part of design 1.2.0 Vehicle Body Part 1 listed to have 21.9mm
length left for the wheel axle to be inserted but in design 1.8.3 Vehicle Back View listed to have
26.0mm which does not match each other about the same thing. It will cause confusion to
constructor for getting the right and accurate information about the building instruction.
Strangely enough, in design 1.3.2 Vehicle Storage Part 3 show that the total length of the
vehicle storage as 295mm but in the other design 1.8.4 Vehicle Side View show that the total
length of the vehicle storage is only 196.7mm which given the wrong information on either of
the design which will make contractor suspect the designers professionality.

5. CAR SPECIFICATION
DISCUSSION
In step 2.5.3.2, the outer wheel size is 85mm and the sponge to be inserted into the wheel
is 30mm diameter as listed which will leave an unnecessary 55mm space between the
outer wheel and the sponge
The wings for the car design is just an extra weight added on top of the vehicle to increase
the acceleration after the ramp during the free fall.
The body base is just 2 pieces of cardboard which will be too weak to support the 600ml of
water on a meter drop and will actually bend the body base.
In the bottle casing to keep the bottle, left over pieces of sponge can be fill in the bottom
of the box to increase the time of impact to decrease force.
