Type your answers to the following questions:

1. Have you seen an instance of cross-disciplinary (interdisciplinary) approaches to

learning? If so, please describe at least one instance. If not, what is a lesson that you

have seen taught in which you can think of a way to incorporate another subject area? Be

specific!

I have seen many instances of cross-disciplinary approaches to learning. My teacher uses this

approach quite often. She uses worksheets that have you identify a number of objects, but

also instructs you to write out the number. That is just one example of many.

2. What are the forms of punishment that the teacher uses?

When a child misbehaves, they have a system where they use clips. They simply move their

clips down.

3. What are the behaviors that the teacher punishes?

If a child says an inappropriate phrase or repeatedly makes bad choices, they will get their

clips moved down.

4. What ways does the teacher reward students?

If a child shows good behavior, the opposite effect occurs. The clip is moved up. She also

uses sweet treats; these are candy treats given for good behavior or completing work.

5. What are the behaviors that the teacher rewards?

Completing work, doing correct behavior, and making good choices.

6. Tell an instance in which your teacher built on students prior knowledge.

My teacher pretty much starts every week with something and builds on it throughout the

whole week. By doing this, she builds on their prior knowledge.

7. Choose something to share that you have found interesting in regard to your time

observing?

The most interesting thing that I have seen within my classroom is in regard to a single

student. This student was new when I started observing, and didnt speak a word of English.

She has grown so much during my time there. It is amazing to see how she acts, but also how

the other kids interact with her.

Reflection:
The artifact mentioned above is a set of service learning questions that I had to complete

in my Educational Psychology, EDUC 250 class. We were required to complete twenty hours

of service learning within this class. During these hours, I learned a lot about what being a

teacher is like. I also learned how to use cross-disciplinary approaches to learning. I was

questioned about my teachers cross-disciplinary approaches in the assignment above.

This artifact especially relates to INTASC Standard 7. Standard 7 is all about different

approaches to implementing the standards in the classroom. By using prior knowledge, and

building on it, this can be achieved; this is exactly what a cross-disciplinary approach is:

taking advantage of that prior knowledge. In the artifact above, I make the claim that my

service learning teacher does just that. She builds on prior knowledge, and intertwines

different subjects in order to teach the students what they need to know. This approach can be

very helpful in achieving the goal of meeting all of the state standards. By observing my

service learning teacher implement this strategy, I am more confident about doing it myself.

My teacher taught me the importance of INTASC Standard 7 and all the action that it

encourages.
This artifact and reflection allowed me to create many goals for myself. This area of

education is hard to navigate. How to differentiate lessons and cross subjects is not an easy

task. By reflecting on the artifact, I learn that I have been given the basis of how to

implement these strategies into my own classroom. I suppose my goal is to learn more. What

are more techniques to further the actions needed to meet this standard? I would like to

observe more strategies and discover more approaches in order to meet this goal. The only

way to achieve this is to be in the classroom. I will try my hardest to achieve this professional

leaning goal.
